  • it seems almost impossible to avoid writing mary- sues. on all the fiction sights, every female lead you come across is a mary- sue. and all the guys are just perfect gary- stu edward cullen- style rip- offs.

  • @Ayatron34 Meyer must have been smoking weed at the time.

  • A bad-ass warrior named Crimson Rayne or a humanitarian named Serena Mercy.

  • Also (cause I ran out of room last time), I couldn't agree with you more about the popularity of Sues. I go on this one site and in the Hetalia fandom there is a character for Alaska. She is definitely the biggest Mary-Sue I have ever seen (and I've read My Immortal) and yet she is one of the most popular people in the fandom on this particular site. I've never understood how nobody can see the excessive Sue-dom I see flooding from every pore of this awful character.

  • After hearing that list I thought of an original fiction character I wrote a story with almost four years ago... Whenever I think of her I get really embarrassed because she is quite the Mary-Sue, and now I go over my characters at least five times along with trying out online quizzes for Mary-Sue testing and watching videos such as this. I think that nothing really helps me be Sue-proof more than having a past character be a Sue. It gives me the motivation to never repeat that mistake again....

  • "Bulroc has many powers... lots and lots of powers!"

  • You should write a book on how not to become a Mary Sue... it would be beneficial to aspiring authors

  • @kaybbayyy2362

If someone needs to be told what a Mary Sue is, they probably are one.

  • @SovereignStatesman Yea but it could help them to get out of it, i mean it is possible

  • @kaybbayyy2362 Nah, they'd just be more low-key about it; an egotist can't help but write egotistically.

  • @SovereignStatesman Hahah I get your point. Ok how about a Book bashing Mary-sue's would that be ok

  • @kaybbayyy2362

There's enough of that online-- Google "Marissa Amber Flores Picard" for tomes and tomes of fan-made ridicule of actual fanfic revolving around a character which has been titled "The ultimate Mary Sue..." essentially she becomes a teenage Starfleet admiral, as well as princess of her own planet.... I can't even stand to think about it.

  • I always thought that Bella's first name was also a refrence to Bela Lugosi, one of the most famous Dracula actors. Then again maybe I put more thought into it than Meyer did.

  • Oh god..... I'm in that part of youtube again :|

  • keep hearing that word and did not know what it means until now when I searched for the meaning

  • Gary Stu`s real name is Ken

  • I have a question for you people out there: I'm writing a book in which the main character has many talents. However, she is not the only one. Those talents are also only variations of the same one. Does that make her a Sue or is it normal? I'm asking because I've seen many stories in which the character does not have that many talents but people call him/her a Gary/Mary Stu/Sue.

  • @inesaranha well, it depends. in books, there r the main genres of character: the 1st, cold loner bu cool and bad ass, 2nd popular and many friends, and 3rd, shy and nice but too much of a normal normallish girl whos too modest, if ur gonna make character, mke sure she either very nice but ugly or pretty but bad personality or loner but very musically smart.

  • @inesaranha

1: Is she the only one with these types of powers/talents, or are her talents stronger/better/more useful in situations that will crop up later in the story.

2: What are her talents in relations to others. Does she have more than others? Less? What exactly are these talents being used?

3: Do these talents magically trump most of whatever drama, conflict or actions used against character in story? With ease?

    cont-

  • @inesaranha

Ug it ate my post completely.

4: Is she unnaturally colored in any way? Or vice versa, is she normal in the world of abnormal?

5: Is she always right? Always sure of being right? Always right no matter what?

6: Do people instantly fall in love with her, want to be her friend or follow after her, with little interaction before these thoughts?

7: Is her personality to good? Even in times when others would waver, if even for the briefest of moments?

    cont-

  • @inesaranha

8: Does your character have an over dramatic backstory or history that she keeps dredging up? Or that turns out to be a plot point later out of the blue? Do overly dramatic actions happen only to your character? And no one else? Is she 'I'M DEEEEEEP [in a bottle of whiskey]' when asked what's wrong?

9: Does she lack REAL FLAWS OF CHARACTER/WEAKNESS?

If you answered yes to most over 5 of these questions, work on your characters more. Not just the main character, but the others too

  • Mary Sues can either be perfect or have endearing flaws, i.e. clumsiness or stubborness

  • OK...time to speak up... BELLA IS NOT A MARY SUE. She IS... Annoying Cliche Self-Insert Boring Undeveloped but not Mary Sue. Ginny is not a Mary Sue either. She's just not developed throughout the course of the story. Bottom line...Mary Sues are perfect. They are good at everything or almost everything, and they have little to no real flaws. Get it straight, people.
  • I've come up with some Mary Sue-ish characters, but never written any fanfiction about them. It's one of those things you do when you get in a really weird mood.

It's fun to create them sometimes, but never in a serious fashion.

It is really irritating to find them in actual published pieces like Twilight. It's things like this that make me wish it was harder for people to get published.

  • @DreamersBallad You must tell me where you reside, because that's where I want to be when someone says "it's easier to get published." I've been trying to get published for five years, and have had no such luck. You see getting published is a lot harder than Meyer, Alyson Noel, the writers of "House Of Night," make it sound, because you have to have certain things in order before you can get a "yes."

  • @DemonicRemption I guess your right. It just seems too easy occasionally when I read a book that is so poorly written.

Either way, I wish you luck in getting published.

  • i have that exact same pikachu pillow. :1

  • Clumsiness is a TRAIT not a flaw but most don't know it :)

  • The only reason I tried to read Twilight is because my sister's name is Bella Sophia so I read it... My name is nothing close. (it doesn't have a part in the name list: it's Izis, but you can call me Izzy!)

  • Is being nice to a fault considered a Mary Sue flaw, or not a real flaw?

  • Don't forget Edward's name : Edward Anthony Masen Cullen if you define his name Edward= rich guard, happy, prosperous Anthony= priceless, praiseworthy, flourishing Masen= one who works with stone, Cullen= good looking lad. I believe Bella describes him with some of these characteristics and I think she says something about his chiseled body. But I never read the whole book :/

  • @LonelyAtHeart4ever She means actual CHARACTER flaws that are played out well during the saga. Clumsiness can be used as a flaw, but it doesn't affect her. Love for Edward saves her everytime too, so that disqualifies it. Confusion about her feelings? She's pretty decided to me. She's always been in love with Edward and that never changes. Flaws in characters need to make it difficult for them to solve things, like a normal person. Also, three flaws doesn't make a charcter well-developed.

  • Damn! I never really realized how much of a Mary Sue my main character is! :( Granted she doesn't posses ALL of the traits but my goodness! I should just change her name to Mary

  • well a mary sue is actually a character that is 2 perfect. I don´t agree that the character´s name can´t have a special meaning, since all japanese names have special meanings and there are a lot of fanfictions for anime out there. Apart from that, i agree with everything in this rant....and bella gets on my nerves =_=

  • I like unique names though like river or alaska or jasmine because normal names are so boring and also unique names are the norm these days as parents seem to crueler than ever

  • Its impossible for me to create a mary sue even when i was just starting out as writer and my main character was a savant they still would have flaws now my characters are very flawed and arent perfect nor are they the best at what they do stephenie meyers cant write for shit

  • I do the exact opposite of that with my Avatars. They're generally just as @#$%ed up as I am -- or more so -- are bitterly radioactive at the concept that all human beings are born tending towards habits of goodness and nicety, and will do whatever they want, whenever they want, and don't dare give a damn how vast the body count starts climbing or who's heart they break. [This may go on for a few panels...]

  • These dank, dark, static characters are my personal "FUCK YOU!" to the pathetically idealistic society we, as human, have somehow evolved into believing true. They are a brutal kick to the teeth with a steel toed boot to fans who hate/admire the fandom I'm writting in and my own followers. As blatantly sad as that sounds, I am unashamed of it. Coming to terms of who I am, and what it's taken for me to do so, was a bitterly sweet process of heartbreak and disappointment.

  • I have three characters with unique names & 3 regular names. Example: Wisteria, Lark, & Cil. Regular names are: Laurence, Bruce, & Abby. See? Your characters' names don't have to be plain in order to be an original character. Just try to keep it balanced. It also helps if you don't STRESS the meaning of your characters' unique name. Stephenie Meyers stresses the meaning of Bella's name by making her someone very "beautiful" & "desireable" to numerous characters. Balance is key.

  • Me personally, I don't think that if a character has a unique name that the character is a mary sue. I just don't think that only ONE character should have an overly beautiful name while the rest of the characters have plain & overly-used names. In my original fiction story, I try to keep the name thing as balanced as possible. (check part 2 of this comment to see the names of my characters.)

  • Arya is the worst Mary Sue ever.

  • All I could see was the pikachu. It took all the attention out of the video... Lol XD

  • In order not to have a mary sue create a character that's basically normal or have many flaws or limitions that would either take a extremely long time to get over or never get over, but learn to live with or not. I guess character suppose to be boring I guess, but their way more original though. Btw I agree with your video its very imformative.

  • This video cleared somethings up about mary sues for me, thank you.

  • in a few years it'll be called

    bella sue

  • You forgot to say that the character is even more of a Sue if people hate her because she's so ULTRA KAWAII DESU. xD

  • @FuzenKitsune Just to point out, "Kawaii Desu" Means "It is[/She is/He is/They are/ etc.] Cute/So Cute" So you're saying "...Because she's so ULTRA SHE IS CUTE" Just thought I'd give you a small Japanese lesson. :)

  • @Stardoll6854 Generally when the word 'kawaii' is used it means 'cute'. It can also mean other things but generally when one thinks of the word 'kawaii', they think 'cute'.

  • Yes someone finally agrees with me that Bella Swan is a mary-sue!

  • Shame on you Stephenie Meyer. No true writer would publish a novel with a Mary-Sue in it! But then again, how many writers have done that? Oh, and wonderful video hun. :D

  • Don't forget Bella means beautiful in Latin aswell!

  • For those who don't believe there are Mary Sues in Harry Potter, I have only this to say:

Ginevra "Ginny" Weasley - The equivalent of Bella Swan in Harry Potter's universe.

  • @Pippland ginny is not a mary sue..............pls watch chamber of secrets

  • @1bulma1 If you are suggesting that I re-watch the Chamber of Secrets MOVIE for the thousandth time, I don't believe you understand that I'm well educated with the Harry Potter series. I have read all the books many times and have found Chamber of Secrets to do Ginny no justice. The book shows her as a damsel in distress; something that I find just as unoriginal for a main character as a Mary Sue. The evidence of Ginny's Mary Sue-ness can be found in the BOOK; Half-Blood Prince.

  • @Pippland I think u misunderstand what bn an 'it girl' is and a mary sue, ginny is physically atrractive, so it is only natural that guys will fight over her,at leasy jo rowling describes her as attractive, smeyer states bella is palin and yet we all know she is not bella has the whole world at her fit, ginna doesnt

also ginny can exist without harry, heck she went to battle with him in the order of the phoenix whaty does bella do ?

    the point is

ginny as a character is superior to bella

  • @1bulma1 Certainly Ginny is superior to Bella! There's literally no competition. However, Ginny did show many signs of a Mary Sue in Half-Blood Prince that cause me to dislike her character, at least in that book. Mary Sues are characters that provide LIFE FULFILLMENT. Since JKR has stated that Ginny is what she wanted to be when she was younger. Yes, they are also self-inserts for the author, but that is only one type of Mary Sue. CONTINUED ON NEXT COMMENT

  • @1bulma1 Ginny is a Mary Sue in the sense that she is what JKR wanted to be before she graduated from High School. Mary Sues are made to give the author life-fulfillment, or some satisfaction of getting to be the perfect, popular girl every other girl wanted to be. The same can be said for Gary Sues. JKR stated that she wanted to be like Ginny in an interview, by the way. I agree, though; Ginny is far superior to Bella. At least Ginny could decently defend herself and do things herself.

  • you guys are gonna love this:

    Edward Cullen: Handsome, Rich Guard

    when will it end?

  • Meyer actually thinks Bella's a feminist role model.

I can't come up with any words to make that look stupider than it already does.

  • Comment removed

  • Anyone know where the term "Mary Sue" originates from?

  • @TheUnbeholden Apparentely, a writer created character that was overly perfect (it was on purpose) and used it to emphasize how writer's are losing originality.

    Or something along those lines.

  • @TheUnbeholden I would guess that it's from older days when the name "Mary-Sue" inspired a perfect little girl. I always personally thought it had something to do with Mary Jane from Spider-Man, but I could be wrong.

  • you know what i think, mary sues are in this world till we die, if you want to know .. everything we love is a mary sue... if you want somthing that isn't here's what you have...

A girl with brown eyes and brown hair, she wears a pik shirt with a yellow flower and regular blue jeans and white sneakers. she goes to school like everyone else and dosn't love anybody, and no there isn't any event where a boy she loves comes to school or she all of a sudden runs into someone.. she just hangs around.

  • I never quite understood why having a short temper was considered a sue thing. I mean, I understand if it's like "Mary got mad at Betsy for poking at her so she stabbed Betsy. Later at the hostpital, Betsy forgave Mary because she knew of her short temper," but to me that's how the characters respond to her temper. If it was "Later at the hospital, Betsy ordered a restraining order against Mary because she stabbed her," it doesn't quite sound like a Sue thing. Anyone else care to explain for me?

  • I agree with you that most of Mary Sue fics have loads os reviwes, but sometimes they actually have a pretty decent plot, or the characters are in personlaity, I've seen many, Ive read fanfics for 7 years, and thought not all of them, some which are kind of Mary Sue are my favs, I write too, and I gotta tell you, its a LOT harder then you think to write a story that still appeals to the readers and dosen't have a Mary Sue, ive trie not to do on, but after I finish i always realise one way

  • Is Stephenie Meyer AWARE OF ANY OF THIS? I don't see her acknowledging any of this in her millions of interviews.

  • Comment removed

  • So true.

  • "Bella" Swan = Beautiful Swan...

    Really Stephenie Meyer?

  • @daisyhinojosa23 also the fact that swans mate for life

is that meant to be some sort of hint between her and Edward...you know, after he left her in the second book...and after she blatantly flirts with Jacob

    ...

why wasn't her name just bella b*tch, it woulda made more sense XD

  • @daisyhinojosa23 Your name probably means something, too, you know...

my name, for example, means "glittering, flowing white."

  • @chesiregirl i know but its still ridiculous i mean you don't see that many people whose first and last name make a single phrase. My first name is Daisy and you don't see me walking around with the last name Flower or anything. I know Bella is a common name and it sounds lovely, but couldn't she have had a more realistic last name? Something that would make her less of a Mary Sue? Just sayin.... :/

  • so like ichigo from tokyo mewmew

  • Pikachuuuuuu! i haven't read the books yet

  • I try to make my characters well rounded people, except for one who's a sociopath. But I always get paranoid that the character is coming off Sueish. Maybe I care too much haha

  • You're right about Sue-fics vs stories that adhere to the rules of canon. I write a lot, and it always seems like my stories get next to no reviews, while the poorly written Sues get all the praise. Am I being petty? Perhaps, but it's still damn frustrating.

  • Finally i know what a mary sue is... An twilight is full of them!

  • I agree. I like Twilight and even I think she and Edward are Mary Sues.

  • wooow...WHO CARES?

  • @agprincess013 People who write stories

  • "Flaws consist of her being so beautiful people won't leave her alone, or having a bad temper. These are meant to garner pity from the audience."

Dabbit. Critics are chew me out if the publisher I submitted "Princess Of The Damned" to decides to publish it. Why? well the main character distances herself from ppl because she's a demon. i.e. "Pity card."

  • I have that same Pikachu thingy!!

  • It's a terrible epidemic, isn't it?

    Mary Sues....*spits*

  • @WolfeGirl1 You know mary sues are terrible when it's acknowledged by a girl...

  • @DemonicRemption *snickers*

  • i used to be somewhat guilty of the name with a meaning thing X_X but ive stopped, luckily, and instead pick random names :D

  • @chesiregirl There's really nothing wrong with picking a name that carries meaning for the character. You just not to make the definition so obvious. Bella for example is short for "Isabella" which means "beautiful," and how is this played out? She has five guys interested in her even though she doesn't see herself as "attractive."

  • pikachu!!!!

  • @ccrstarpanda GODDAMN IT, AHHHHHH!

  • I don't understand why people criticize leads that are the author's insert (self-inserting). Charles Dickens himself have written male leads that experienced many things that he personally had in his life. Even Jo Rowling said harry, ron, and hermione are a mixture of herself. Authors write what they know, and what better then their own lives and experiences. The only problem with this is in the case of smeyer, who forgets to add the negative aspects of herself along with the good.

  • Please dont conpare TVE awesomes of DBZ to mary sues ....

  • The ugly duckling actually has to be ugly for it to work though. Rather than go from ugly to beautiful, Isabella's gone from Supermodel to Goddess beauty.

Like I can empathise with that.

  • This kinda makes Juliet from "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet" seem sorta like one.

  • @Tairine795 Yeah, but while Bella doesn't appear to have character flaws, Juliet does. (Note that Bella/Meyer fails to find Juliet's flaw in "New Moon" and says she's "perfect".) Juliet AND Romeo are immature, rash, reckless and stupid, and all of this lead to their death in the end; Shakespeare actually wrote the tragedy as a satire about young people.

  • @jusk8lp

    This is true.

Gosh, looking at the standards again...

This makes me worried that I am.

    I don't wanna be a Mary Sue!! D:

  • @Tairine795 You can't be a Mary Sue; you're a real person, aren't you? :)

  • @jusk8lp

    True...

GAH! I've confused myself! *bangs head against a wall*

  • @Tairine795 yeah, Juliet and Romeo are both mary sue and gary stu. BUT that was shakespeare intention. The whole play is a SATIRE, meaning it is poking fun at immature teenage love. Romeo and Juliet is supposed to be a big joke, not the greatest love story of all time. UNLIKE Smeyer, who actually takes her story and characters seriously.

  • This video is holds some good information. I created an OC for a Starfox fancomic I'm planning but I didn't do any research on mary sues beforehand. After getting deeper into the subject, I guess the worst damage is already done. And I probably can't undo it, because because I already posted a drawing and character bio on Deviant Art. :( I guess the best I can do now is to try and compensate for the "sue-traits" my OC has and your vid is a great inspiration.

  • i see a pikachuuuu!!

  • Is a Bella Swan. Is a beautiful swan. LOL XD

  • @sastath ....but it might just be an accident, since smeyer got the last name from the REAL sheiff of Forks, whose name IS Charlie Swan (he really is a REAL person).

  • I see where you're coming from but as a guy speaking who read the whole Twilight series I was more annoyed with Bella than anything, I didn't much care for her at all, but maybe I'm just naturally immune to MS's.

  • Really nice! I like it! I didnt understand every sentence.. but.. i also like it!

  • I disagree with one thing. having a bad temper can easily be a severe flaw, if handled correctly.

  • @robokill387 I agree. Bad temper can be a flaw...but it NEEDS to have consequences in order for it to be a flaw. For example, a bad temper is a flaw when it gets me in trouble (suspension from school, getting arrested after a fight, etc.). When you don't get any consequences for the bad flaw, it no longer is a bad flaw, but just a character trait.

  • All good points. And you're really pretty, btw. :)

  • Is Bella's mom Mrs. Swan?

  • @TomMSTie no, I think their divorce, therefore the mother would have her old maiden name back

  • @sunnyxlove1990 It was a joke. Mrs. Swan was a character from MadTV played by Alex Borstein.

  • @TomMSTie oh, haha. I thought the character was "Ms." Swan? (btw, I used to be an avid madtv fan until they replaced the main cast)

  • @sunnyxlove1990 Well you get just as many hits for "Ms. Swan" as you do "Mrs. Swan" so IDK which is correct. The MadTV wiki page says "Ms. Swan" but we all know wiki is not infallible.

  • @TomMSTie well, the character itself does try and seek male companionship. Also, I am pretty sure the character is Ms. Swan. Yes, wiki is not 100% accurate, but the MadTv website says Ms. Swan. Just because some people online get the name wrong, that doesn't mean it is suddenly Mrs. Swan just because you say so. Her character is not married. I don't want to sound like a douche, but just admit that your wrong, because you are...don't let ur pride get away from the facts.

  • Mary Sue like "My Immortal" Mary Sue or what?

  • you are awesome. explanation was on point.

  • i've been using the information in this series to assess my characters in my anime idea... my main, i've tweaked to no longer be a gary stu, but it just dawned on me... my secondary main protagonist fits most of this sadly well :|

  • Something about her name has always rubbed me the wrong way. Thanks for clearing that up or me!

  • LOL! I have a character with crimson and raine in his name!

Lucky for me he's a joke character!

  • OMG i see a kitty!! X3

    like the video *thumbs up*

  • @HotWheelMaster It's the Pirate Cat from The Last Unicorn!!!

  • Great summary! Glad someone has made this. I would have loved it if you'd intercut some images from various popular Suestories, but w/e. Great contribution to fandoms and YouTube!

  • (Oh also, a note from the puppeteer -- my puppet Weena is *totally* a self-insert, but I think she's insecure, mean, and noisy enough not to be a true Mary Sue ^_^)

  • also mary sue's tend to be raped or in danger of being raped (which they promptly get over, of course...)

  • Its so true that really good fanfics that stay true to the cannon, but are excellently written, get few reviews compared to Mary Sue and porn-without-plot fics. Its so frustrating.

  • Teh, cat.

  • Finally I learn what a mary sue is!!!!!! Ive heard the term used sooo much and now I finally know what it mean thanx 4 posting!!!!...wow I am such a Fanfict n00b xD

and WOW Bella is a major mary sue!!!!!! ......Maybe stephanie Meyer wrote a lot of fanficts lol

  • I need to keep this with me at all times

Just incase I forget what a Mary Sue is >>

I hope I don't have any Mary Sues in my fanfics or Role Plays

  • i don't have a mary sue. her name is Kita Son. S She's 3/4 Saiyan and 1/4 Earthling. She has blonde hair and blue eyes. She gets her ass kicked by the villains along with everyone else. Her attacks are flight, ki blasts, solar flare, double sunday, dragon fist, bukujutsu, and fusion! She has a fear of needles for a flaw!

  • @dbzgirl41

    ... That's a sue

  • Whether or not she's a Mary Sue depends on how she's written and on how much pagetime she gets.

Fear of needles also isn't a valid flaw. Unless theres a dbz villain called needledude or something. If the flaw is unrelated to the central premise of the show - fighting in dbz's case, than its a faux flaw and does not count I'm afraid.

  • @dbzgirl41 fear of needles isn't a big enough flaw for a dbz character. I mean, goku's flaw is his stupidity and excessive soft-heartedness, and vegeta's is that he is blinded by pride and never thinks things through. see what I mean?

  • @robokill387 actually I have to disagree. A flaw is something that ends up having a negative consequence in your life. Goku being naive and kind is actually something that makes him win in the end; it is THAT very quality in him that makes him special. It is an enduring quality, and that cannot be a flaw. A real flaw in Goku is his Saiyan blood. He is a softy, but it is always that part of himself that ends up negatively affecting his life and the ones he loves.

  • @sunnyxlove1990 goku's softheartedness does make him endearing, but being stupid does affect him and others negatively sometimes. like when he lets majin buu live and then he procceeds to wipe out the earth's population.

  • you forgot to add in some cases that the Mary Sue will have horrible past usually rivaling or out right blowing the mains out of the water in attempts to make every one feel sorry for her

  • I love your voice, it sounds like you're about to burst out laughing at any moment XDD

Anyway, Bella, I agree, is a Mary Sue. Some people say she isn't because she's 'not perfect', but she's the classic example of an Anti-Sue. I.E The author goes into great detail describing how NORMAL and AVERAGE the character is... and then has every single character in the book either fall in love with her or be jealous of her.

  • Before I knew anything of Twilight, before the infamous sparkly vampires, I heard that the protagonist's name was Isabella Swan aka 'Beautiful' Swan and gagged promptly.

  • When I first heard about twilight I couldn't take it seriously because of that name. And lo the beast has reason from the sea shouting names of blasphemy...

  • PIKACHU!!!! :D

No, but seriously. Bella is not perfect... She is so annoying when you get further into the book! But on the other hand, I haven't read Breaking Dawn yet. Maybe she is lovely in that book ^^

  • yay PIKACHU

  • This is sooooooooooo true! And Kristen Stewart has no emotions.

  • Love the pikachu pillow! <3

  • SHUT UP there's NOTHING wrong with being homosexual or black!!!!

  • lol I have that same kind of pikachu pillow

  • I watched this for the first time a long time ago, but this was actually the first video that introduced me to Mary Sues. Thank you.

  • hi bella! ^ ^ how are you today?

  • I agree with you, I can't stand Mary-Sues at all! They are too perfect and have unrealistic characteristics that NO ONE can relate to. But I kinda like to think of it this way, the classic saying "Sex sells"is a true statement, well in this sad generation of teens I'm apart of "Perfection sells"

True a lot of us hate Mary-sues and even Twilight, yet Twilight is one of the top selling books around the world and you can't really stop that. so maybe thats why Sue stories are getting many reviews

  • PIKACHU <3

  • Thnak you for this. I think I'm writing a Garry Stu, I better change it.

  • Luv ur pikachu <3

  • Hey! I love your series, but I'm afraid I still don't quite understand what a Mary-Sue is. You say Bella is a Sue and that Sues are flawless, yet you go on to describe how Bella mistreats her friends and is a weak female. I'm just wondering what you mean when you say Bella is a Sue, because I'd like to know if my own characters are Sues.

  • Sorry for the confusion! She's a Sue because we are not supposed to see her flaws as flaws. If she mistreats her friends we are meant to see it as justified. If she complains every other sentence, we're meant to sympathize with her. If her actions were shown to have negative consequences for her, then she wouldn't be so much of a Mary Sue. Then she'd be more of a "real" character.

  • @shmeiliarockie realise, one way or another, that my main character ended up a Mary Sue, so many times have I driven myself crazy to try and not make her one, but if its not one things its another, it gets hard, so so SO hard *sighs* stupid readers that want everything perfect *grumbles*

  • @SxcLilAussieBabe let me explain because I think most ppl dont understand what a flaw is (ppl confuse it with character trait). A flaw is something that negatively affects your life. Yes,Bella mistreats her friends, but that doesn't negatively affect her life, because those friends just go back to her with no qualms. A weak female personality trait doesnt negatively affect her because she gets everything in the end. It would be a flaw if it killed her or someone she loves because of her weakness

  • Great work though I think there might be something wrong with your mike.

  • GREAT AS ALWAYS and when you say the thing about the reviwes that is sooooo true

  • Gary Stu? Yeah, he's my best friend which is pretty difficult considering we've never actually met.

  • Yes, a point I agree with all of my being!

  • The problem is that Mayer doesn't present his "overprotective" nature as a flaw. The way that Edward is described in the book, it's pretty clear that this is the author's ideal man.

  • I don't know if it depends on your age or your mindset when you read the book how you perceive Edward, but I certainly considered it a flaw. It drove me crazy and was one of the things that never let me fall in love with Edward. Stephenie Meyer, herself, has stated that Edward's great character flaw is his tendency to overreact, and that it's something he has to let go of for him and Bella to be equal. After her transformation, their relationship changes drastically, I would say.

  • Also,I've had some interesting discussions on Twilight forums whether we can trust Bella as a narrator.I know that SM is the author, but it's Bella telling the story, we se what she sees.Edward is only described as the ideal man by Bella. If we look at his actions, he does things that I'd find it hard to stomach in a boyfriend, but the impact is softened by how Bella perceives it.We, as readers, can choose to take Bella's words at face value or look beyond them.I think that makes it interesting.

  • I think you give SM too much credit as an author. Usually when a narrator is untrustworthy, there's always a clue in the text. Don Quijote, The Same Sea as Every Summer, and the letters about the conquest of Mexico are examples of this. Twilight has no textual evidence to back up that claim...unless SM is being super ironic.
