Thanks for posting this. As a junior player, the Swedes were always my favorite players to emulate. There was just something so cool about their games; (heart, grace, consistency, and fight). I went to this tennis academy when I was 15, where one of the coaches called me "baby wilander" due to my backhand. It was a great compliment, since I never had any formal coaching prior to that. Everything I learned was from watching these matches. You can see a lot of Borg in Nystom's strokes.
@BuddhaShiva1 I remember that match very well. At that time, we didn't think Boris could possibly lose. He seemed invincible after his Wimbledon win a few months prior. I remember Nystrom played out of his mind that day. Has there ever been a generation of talent from one country with that many great players (in the Top 10)? Borg started it. Then came Wilander,Edberg,Jarryd,Nystrom,Sundstrom,K.Carlson,J.B.Svensson. The U.S was close with the Sampras,Agassi,Courier,Chang era.
@theatlantean2 It's much more impressive from Sweden such a small country only had bit over 8 million at the time. Peter Lundgren at his best was 23rd in the world and only the 7th best Swede. It was a very special generation and one that won't be repeated sadly.
@BuddhaShiva1 Yes I remember that, a quarter final. Becker didn't play the match point, thinking the ball was going out but it touched the line, and thus he lost.
Nyström was very underrated as a player, always in his friend Wilander's shadow, but he showed what he was capable of in Monte Carlo, making Noah look average.
Noah said he played against a wall

I remember a couple of Nystrom - Lendl duels that were fun to watch. Playing against Nystrom was like playing against the wall.

@xfimpg Those matches went for ages, but Lendl just like Mats always found a way to beat Nyström.

@theatlantean2 I agree. Nystrom was a great player. One of my favorite matches with him, is his win over Becker in the '85 U.S. Open.

Noah had not slept. His daughter was born the previous night. That is why the score is so harsh but Nystrom was indeed very talented.

Nystrom won La Quinta as well that year, which would become Indian Wells in '87.
