  • chords?

  • Forget it people. Some individuals have no clue about the simple fact that music throughout history has always been about stories. Al Stewart is a consumate (if you don't know what this word means look it up in a dictionary) story teller.

  • @tramanor "Al Stewart is a consumate (if you don't know what this word means look it up in a dictionary) story teller."

    Second that.

I'd even go you one better, and say he's a "consummate" storyteller.

    Writes good tunes, too.

And like so many of his fans, I wish he'd get more recognition and mainstream success -- but at the same time, get a little guilty pleasure of knowing that we know the secret that most people don't.

  • Love this one!

  • @SuperWiz666 Uhm has anyone seen Emma Bunton lately? ----> =) =) =) =) But yes i see what you mean.

  • wonderful track! Love it, Al Stewart is still amazing!

  • I think the only thing that Stewart intends with all those stupid lyrics is call the attention of some history professor in order to get out of his shell and finally have a real life :D. I know the lyrics are unique and I know ALL about Al, and it's magnificent and super and so on, but, sorry, he should better write a book then instead of spamming the melodies. Finally, I want to listen to music, and not have a history lesson. Because imagine: This guy read 40 books to write Roads To Moscow...

  • @g12886 lol, you'll not be listening to any more then? Will save you the trouble of moaning...

May I suggest a few Spice girls songs?

That should provide sufficient blandness to your lyrical quest!

:) Good luck in that quest!

  • @g12886 Yeah if only there were more like KC and the Sunshine Band. There is lots of music for drones. About Al, writing songs and playing piano and guitar is what he does. If you don't like what Al does, there is everyone else, most of whom bore ME into catatonia.

  • OMG i never hear this song before...

fun part is that my name is hanno..

i never met someone with the same name.. and al steward made a song with my name.. lol

  • @JPSoviet Fuck you back egghead. Who's to be blamed for your lack of sufficient common sense in watching the right video. Get your head out stuck inside your butt.

  • @nitinomatic Ah fuck you jerkoff, I just wanted to watch some history not some fucking 6 year old sing along.

  • @JPSoviet Try listening to the song, and you'll be surprised to find that it is an amazing tune, with musical and lyrical surprises aplenty.

  • Unfortunately you have to go to the West coast of the USA to see him live nowadays :-(

  • Yes, he sounds EXACTLY the same!!!

  • @Kornflower22 No, he plays the east cost frequently, thankfully, but every couple years, he's been doing a European stint for two or three weeks.

  • Thank you. Perhaps something will come of it. I wrote a reasonable letter that presents a fair argument. Who knows what what goes in and out of the basket? It would be interesting to get a response either way.

  • Get Some naff new band to cover any of his songs and he may hit the heights.

  • Al Stewart is THE most literary rock/folk artist ever. A wonderful departure from the mindless babble that we wade through year after year. May he go on forever.

  • @HHTimepassages Amen, HHTimepassages!

  • Cool song. I would not have known Al Stewart has put out this good an effort in recording a song in recent years. It is good to see so many other people commenting on how much they appreciate his gift for putting together intelligent lyrics in great songs. If he can just get a publicist, to get one of his gigs included in the next 'Real World' series, Al might just have a resurgence in recognition for his gifted/talents... Either that, or some dates with Paris Hliton, or Kim K....

  • @TheERTURK Al's last two CD's from '05 and '08, and his live release in '09 are phenomenal. Everyone MUST hear Somewhere in England 1915. It'll give you goosebumps. Al is the best songwriter today!!

  • This is one of the BEST songs I have ever heard from Al.

  • Why has this man not had the recognition he truly deseves.

  • Bought this album immediately when it played in the shop. There isn't a bad song on it, but my personal favourites are Eisenhower years and Sleepwalking.

Amazing how Al still sounds 30 years after Year of the Cat!

  • Thanks for posting - I've liked Al Stewart since hearing him for the first time in 1980 and it was great to hear this song.

  • Has an early 1980s sound! Can't believe its 2008 as you say!

  • This is a very happy song it put a smile on my face.

    thank you for uploading:-)

Sometimes i miss going out to sea and visiting other places.

  • This is a very happy song it put a smile on my face.

  • I will have tro get the CD when I go out later today.... Thank you....

  • Love this song, I put it as the background of one of my diving videos. Search youtube for these keywords if you want to see it: hanno and ks89991

  • True talent. Every song is an adventure.

  • He sounds just like he did in the 70's.

  • Great song one of my favourites. I love historical songs and Al is the master of them.

  • Sparks of Ancient Light very good album. Would love to see youtube postings of Like William McKinley and Lonliest Place on the Map if anyone has anything.

  • I was a very young girl when I first listened Al Steward and loved his music still do..

  • i think i will have to order his albums over the net i can only find year of the cat in stores and i already have it.

  • One of Britains true but under-rated talents.

  • @reh1959 Why doesn't the queen knight this guy already? Who is more deserving than Al Stewart?

  • @rac717 Yes!! Really good thought and question. Why not??

  • @rac717 OK. On October 19th, I wrote a very informative letter to the Queen begging consideration for Knighthood, Mr. Alastair Ian Stewart. I wonder if she will appreciate the petition. Lets hope.

  • @HHTimepassages Only if she has good taste in music and poetry, I suppose! But, thanks so much for petitioning her. Wouldn't that be awesome and fitting?

  • @HHTimepassages You can nominate people for honours through direct.gov.uk - try googling for "honours nominations directgov"

  • @rac717

Could it be because Al Stewart is Scottish ?

  • @rolynstone48 Could be, but Scotland is part of GB.

  • @rac717 Excellent question! It 's beyond me; his lyrics/music should be shoved right under her silly royal nose! Manuscript alone is worthy of knighthood, and it only precedes a generous plethera of songwritings obviously/undeniably suitable! Does an issue of "selling out" to America/Hollywood w/ Year Of The Cat lyrics serve to preclude?! Completely ludicrous/should not be any part of the equation! :) Aaah, 'tis not for the title/queen's recognition, rather, the sorely needed awareness...

  • @cherimelodie rac, I definitly exclude you from my comment above. I completely disagree with you, but love your usage of the language.

  • @cherimelodie Hear, hear re. Manuscript. What an incredible song.

  • Simply awesome song. Not quite my favorite on Sparks, but it's vintage Al.

  • I love that there are still a few artists recording whose albums I can buy without any hesitation. Al hasn't published a clunker or a filler tune in a long, long time.

  • I can't believe this song came out 2008, Al Stewart sounds the same as he did in the 70's, I also like that his songs have historical meaning.

  • Great to hear Al Stewart again. It's not an Alan Parsons production, but still very good!

  • Very good lyric transcription!

  • BEAUTIFUL (PHOENICIAN) SONG!

Wow! I'm so speechless! I can't believe someone composed a song about the Phoenicians and "HANNO" the Phoenician navigator of Carthage!

    KRIZTIAN4EVER:

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful song with the world! :)

    _

  • Excellent....the best song of 2008!!!!
