He was also rock solid in defense(except when carter made him look silly in 05) but the rest of his game is good but not great especially without the dominant pack he was behind back in 03.

Thats also a canterbury vs auckland battle or even south isl vs north. Mertins tipped things in his favour towards the end and so did carter. Carter has taken it even further and just ruled mc alister out of the competition all together.

Spencer is a great player but he was inconsistant in his goal kicking. Carter is the complete package, I have never seen a first five with all the skills that Carter has, but Spencer was a close second..if only he could kick goals better...

No, I know quite a bit about the sport and the All Blacks are less successful than England, South Africa and Australia when it comes to world cups, the games biggest stage, SA having won two, Australia having won two and England having won one (NZ won it when the Springboks weren't in it so its not nearly as big an achievment). When Spencer has momentum with him, the attacking rugby he plays is second to none. Carter is just far more all round. He can play in any situation, tho it might not instantly result in a try, and Carter is not a weakness in defence either.
watching spencer was always exciting, but carter was a bit more sensible in tough situations. I don't think one is better than the other, but i would have chosen Spencer for all out attacking rugby.

Spencer is a great player but he was inconsistant in his goal kicking. Carter is the complete package, I have never seen a first five with all the skills that Carter has, but Spencer was a close second..if only he could kick goals better...

Carter is better, Spencer had big ups and downs where as Carter is just always up, he rarely plays a bad game ever at any level. Thats the only thing that put Carter on top his ability to be consistantly brilliant. They had equal skill but Spencer left his at home sometimes.

Spencer is THE best ever!! Never have I seen anyone more difficult to tackle when they have the ball in 2 hands (apart from jason Robinson). He doesnt look as illusive as he is - class and time.
Carter is amazing too but although a different style of player it's gota be Spencer all the way.
Though being English we'd take either of them playing at 50%!!!!

Carter is a better all round player so therefore a better player then Spencer but Spencer's x-factor could turn a game upside down with one little move. However i agree with MrKjc100. RUGBY IS DEAD. The video shows both players making breaks and scoring tries. we don't see that kind of play anymore

No, I know quite a bit about the sport and the All Blacks are less successful than England, South Africa and Australia when it comes to world cups, the games biggest stage, SA having won two, Australia having won two and England having won one (NZ won it when the Springboks weren't in it so its not nearly as big an achievment). NZ are good when the pressure isn't on and in friendlys but come world cup time when all teams are focused the wheels always come off. It always makes me laugh.

No, the All Blacks have been very good at times, they just don't win the big games when the pressure is greatest, its a fact whether you like it or not. Plus its not like Australia are serial chokers in the league world cup, they've won nine out of 13 which is a 69% success rate, the All Blacks have won one in six which is a 16% success rate while the only one they won didn't have the Boks so doesn't really count. All Blacks are good in friendlies, fall apart on the big stage.

Yeah, its nice to win friendlies but anyone who says friendlies matter more than world cup matches are fooling themselves. Teams often send second string sides on end of year tours to play test matches, I wouldn't descrube them as being more important than when the biggest prize in world rugby is at stake.

I remember watching carlos play 4 auckland against Otago in a Npc game, he scored like 5 trys, one was when he rolled the ball up his arm, but it looked like he passed it an for a few seconds ya didnt know where the ball was but he had it an scored. An he scored from the carlos knee kick thing, that I think has been outlawed in the game now as a knock on.

When Spencer has momentum with him, the attacking rugby he plays is second to none. Carter is just far more all round. He can play in any situation, tho it might not instantly result in a try, and Carter is not a weakness in defence either.

watching spencer was always exciting, but carter was a bit more sensible in tough situations. I don't think one is better than the other, but i would have chosen Spencer for all out attacking rugby.

lets be honest new zealand have been awsome in the number 10 postion grant fox,spencer,merhtens and carter are all world class. in my opinion marshall was the best scrumhalf ever ! i was extremely upset when he left my regional side the ospreys :)
