Once my last man died after I released a sinibomb; and the bomb killed the sinistar, and that gave me an extra ship even though the game was over. After that, the game kept on giving me a new ship when I died, for maybe 8 ships.
That wasn't how I got the Ocean City high score - which I think was 684,000, but maybe 384,000? Twin Galaxies says that score would be either 2nd place, or 6th place. Still wasn't a very long game - cycled through all 4 levels 3 times, I think.
Do these tricks also work for other ports of the game, such as for the SNES/Super Famicom, Sega Genesis/MegaDrive, PS1, PS2, XBox, XBox 360, PS3, Wii, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, PSP, Nintendo DS, PC, and Mac platforms, MysidianMage?
I haven't tested the trick on any of the ports. Theoretically, it would, unless the programmers went in and altered the code.
However, there might be another problem that would prevent it from working on ports/emulations. If there are not individual buttons mapped for 1P/2P Start and Insert Coin, you wouldn't be able to properly execute the trick.
I have Midway Arcade Treasures for the Xbox. I think it combines Insert Coin and 1P Start into a single button, but I'll test it later.
Okay but I figured that asking the question would indeed be relevant for other ports of the game, too, and, in particular, those that were made for 16-bit systems and above, too, MysidianMage.
They are not likely to work on most ports of the game as those ports (snes, etc) would be a completely re-written program and not use the original developer's code, which was written for the custom hardware of the arcade boxes, hardware that's 30 years out of date.
@unka1723 Good point. It is quite true that, especially on ports of the game to older systems (like the 8 and 16-bit ones) which have limited specs to work with, they may completely rewritten. However, the 32 & 64-bit systems are more likely to use true emulation or *maybe* even source code, if it exists. Thus, it would work in theory, if not for things like the button mapping of Midway Arcade Treasures. Sorry notjustanotherface, I suppose I never did get around to testing that...
I just tried this on my PS1 copy of Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits, and it didn't work. It is the original arcade code, but like MysidianMage said, the fact that the start buttons also serve to insert coins at the same time renders the trick impossible to do in these collections. I can, however, confirm that the Robotron 2084 easter egg can be accessed on at least that particular collection, as I've been able to do it before.
When you're moving in a direction, press the joystick briefly in the opposite direction to drift/stop. (For example, if you're moving up, tap down.) How much you slow down or stop depends on how long you hold the joystick.
I'd like to believe this is a glitch, it would be crazy for the creators to add those.
And are these discovered by accident???

Even RJ Michal said in an interview that he guaranteed that no one would ever find it. It's nice to know he was eventually proven wrong.

Nice. First game I remember really loving at the arcade. I was probably 4 or 5 at the time. I miss the arcade...
