Until the F-111 came on the scene in large numbers this was the fastest fighter/bomber down low on the deck. Even during the 70s and early 80s they could out run most USAF fighters down low during training.
It's pretty neat that the Thud was able to find a sort of niche in Wild Weasel missions--it's supposed to be about the size of a B-17--the original mission for the Thud was as a tactical nuclear bomber.
As a kid, I remember standing in the playground at Harry R. Sheppard Elementary School at George AFB and watching the F-105G's take off in full afterburner. What a sight! Yeah, there were F-4's also, but they didn't have the beauty of the Thud!

@ironroad18 I remember reading about the last Thud mission with the CA ANG and Eagles had problems keeping up with it at high speed.
