  • I own the very first 22' Apache made, #001 and keep it at TNT marina. It is the best handling 22 ft boat on the water. I have had it redone a few times and still get thumbs up when I take it out.

  • What a great time we had in the 80's. What happened that we don't see these races anymore? I have a 21 Cig with a 300 V8 Rude with the Latham steering from this era. Makes me smile every time I take her out and drop the hammer. If anyone has more video's of these boats please post them so the next generation can see what it was like back in the day.

  • @6104jimmy

Check with freeze frame i only had the video of our boat....or try to get in touch with the guy who ran it, i think his name was scott something and he worked with Cig for a while....make a post on OSO. Scott Smith may have his number as they worked together. Scott is involved with a new boat company last i heard. Sorry can't help you more, but Scott should be your best lead!

  • Highvelocity123 is fat and bloated.

  • omc and johnson are the same thing dumb ass -_-

  • omc and johnson are the samething dumb ass -_-

  • is the velocity had a v8 also?? and in the video they say omc v8 vs a johnson outboard. The johnson is from OMC so it is the same engine.

  • I own a 1986 22 Velocity, it's great boat but not nearly as heavy as that Apache. The fact it was only a lap down is amazing. Plus the Velocity has a much bigger pad in the back. On calmer water it's much faster than the Apache but no match in big water.

  • Thanks for your reply, but that boat was unbeatable and built specifically to challenge the Velocity, there's only a handfull of people who know the story...even in smooth, this boat rocked. Stock V8 and it ran up to 88mph before it would experience "blow out" and since it was raced, they would not allow nose-cones back then. Only boat (within reason) that could outrun the Rapid Transit, was a red Apache called Red Thunder...that was the "baddest" small Apache ever built.

  • @knotproper

Hello. I was just looking and reminiscing of my old days when I was rigging boats at Apache marine from 1984-1988 and found this video and comments . I rigged the Apache race boat "Rapid Transit" and was the owner of "Red Thunder". It's a complement to hear you say it was the baddest little boat out there. I wonder if we know each other? Check out my Youtube page under "gofst2" and my Facebook page has pic's of my 22' Red Thunder. Fun reading here, Brian Mihalka.

  • @gofst2

Brian, is that you? Long time...those were the days. And some of the stories we can tell would leave people in disbelief! Remember Frankies boat when i was testing engine height? I know what the mangroves look like up close and personal. Send me an email at McCaffertee@gmail.com i

  • This Apache was very light and could outrun the Velocity in both smooth and rough as it was dialed in and setup by me and a guy named Brian who owned Red Thunder - him and I spent hours on most every boat to make sure they made each owner beyond happy. Brian had a "special" touch and a dedication that i have not seen since. I have since lost touch, but him and I were very dedicated to the success of the small Apache brand.

Those WERE some fun times! And the stories.....whoa!

  • @knotproper I agree the Apache is a rough water boat, but it's not even close on the flat water with equal power. I am running 73.1MPH with a 225 EFI 3.0L,,,My friend Alex just hit 76MPH with a 300x on his 22 Apache. We figure my 22Velocity is about 3-500 pounds lighter than his 22Apache.

  • @highvelocity123

Like I said, there are ONLY a few who know. I also worked for Velocity before Apache. My 22' would hit 88MPH before getting blowout, with a stock 300...I doubt any Velocity would see those numbers. The boats that "we" rigged in our day ran great - ask the man who owned Red Thunder.

  • The "Boats" shown are a Velocity 22 and the Apache 22 - the Apache 22 had actually lapped the Velocity as it couldn't compete in the rough stuff. At the end of the race the 300 engine had broken off the mounts and THANKS to the Latham steering system, the engine hung with us to place 2nd...only beaten by a hull of similar design, a 21 Superboat. It had much better balance for the rough water, and no trim tabs!!! It could not keep up in smooth, but in rough, the Superboat we SUPER!!

  • what year was this in?

  • Islamorada, Florida Offshore Race 1985, or maybe 1986

  • Apache do make the 22 Scout Outboard but the boat featured here is a Velocity the boat shown @ 2:02 look like the Scout

  • I never knew Apache made an outboard hull.
