@germyw "Just look and listen to them." <----- well thats funny seeing as how the language they speak is not at all african but is the same language that many south american native tribes still speak. ( gotta love when people open their mouth trying to sound intelligent about something they know ZERO about)
@Gentilejedi First of all, no they wouldnt. Secondly, there are MILLIONS of ricans and dominicans who look just like us. Thirdly the"example" of rican or dominican you are giving, is of either PURE BLOOD caribs/arawaks/tainos, or the ones that have admixture of european. You are not talking about afro-rican, afro-dominican. who by your way of thinking if they were to look as we do you would write off as PURE african so your point is moot.

@azar783408 who said they were enslaved?! i never mentioned that. and it seems to me that you have contradicted yourself. you said earlier that garifuna is not of african descent, then later you said that garifuna is of african descent. garifuna is combination of race. and garifuna didnt get mixed up with africans in the slave ships , thats how garifuna came about. the kalipuna, kalinagu and arawaks mixing with africans. the accents of the africans changed the dialect and garifuna came about
the tru history of the garifunapoele.you all got spanish names, why is that since there is small euro blood in you? what about the exodist of africa long befor the slave trade?you poeple look African to me you mention the ibo,the ashanti, the yoruba.it is mentioned that estevanico saw blacks when columbus and him saw land how come caribs&arawaks were dark with afros
@atrueone1 90% of our spanish last names come AFTER 1797 when we finally lost a 300 year struggle and 30 year war against the europeans, this time at the hands of the British. In 1797 after finally laying down our arms we were deported from St Vincent to Roatan in Honduras. At this point we finally be came citizens/subjects of the government of the land in which we lived at the time which at this time was our old Enemies the spaniards. @atrueone1........ as described by the europeans on first contact. You have to remember these are times before television/radio etc etc. Most of the europeans had never saw either and african OR a native american before. So at first a distinction between the two as far as appearance would not have been made. Even if you look at some of the natives of south america today, if you were to describe them in writing , someone reading could apply alot of the same attributes to many of the various....
@atrueone1 ........peoples of africa and vice versa. There are many stories of various african peoples coming across the atlantic looooong before columbus. But for this particular video series we will be referencing documented/verifiable history. The story as it is told by documentation rather than by emotion and speculation!
@alexjones67 ...in any case the majority of the garinagu of today are mostly sub-saharan dna. I being a decendant of these recognize both sides of my family tree and not just a desirable half. you do you, and I'll go ahead a keep doing me. chao!
you must have missed the part where I used the term "intermarried". I used this term to say that the product of this "intermarriage" created the garinagu people. I guess I should have double checked my sentencing before posting. The original africans from that time were Igbo or some other clan so obviously they were not called garinagu nor are there any such tribe/clan in africa today that I have heard of. what i debate are the post where denial of african ancestry is prevalent.
If you still don't get it maybe this formula will help! Carib + African = Garinagu
Carib + Carib= Carib or White + African = Biracial....I don't like being broken down to the DNa but what I dislike most is devisive nonsense. Why don't we stop fighting over trivial things like last place in social progress and start working together to better blackness so that we can all hold our heads high and just BE who we are.
@butifuldrm ok at first you were saying the Garinagu came over from africa which was false! Now you are trying to take my position as if that was your original argument, which it wasnt, because if it was their would be no debate because that is my WHOLE position. Once again i will say the Garinagu did NOT come from Africa! People from various tribes in africa came to the Caribbean , intermarried with the Kalinagu, and because of the african pronounciation became known as Garinagu
The african captives that escaped the slave ship and intermarried with the carib natives are called garinagu. The Garinagu are a mixed race people and in that admixture is Sub-saharan DNa. Show me a Garifuna person without any sub-sahara DNa and I will show you someone who doesn't exist atleast not today if ever. don't take my word for it. Get a dna test then post your results. Hopefully the truth will set you free.
@butifuldrm correct on part and incorrect! The peoples who came off the ships were NOT called Garinagu! There is not now nor has there ever been a people called the Garinagu on the continent of africa. Garinagu is a african pronounciation of Kalinagu which is what the "Caribs" already living in the islands and south america called themselves. The Garinagu as a people do NOT exist as a people until AFTER the mix between the Carib/Arawak & the various African peoples occurs.
@butifuldrm DNA studies have been done on Garinagu throughout the diaspora and results came back as 74%African,22.8%Amerindian,and 2.2%European. Of course this mary vary from person to person as these are just averages. The same study showed that some of our Garinagu people have more european blood than the so called Latinos that live in the same areas as us!
@58ravenfan02 ..why don't you take a dna test to find out just how much african dna is in your blood. You must be from Honduras or guatemala? I notice Garifuna people in spanish dominated places tend to try to run from their african ancestory in order to fit in. Now I'm not saying that you are 100% pure african but what I'm saying is that you are mixed with african, no lie. but you don't have to take my word for it. DNA don't lie.
The truth of the Garifuna people is not being acknowledged by other people. People claim that the Garifuna people are Africans just because they have dark skin. The truth is the Garifuna language is an Arawakan/Carib language and has nothing to do with the Africans. This means that the Garifuna people are not Africans and have no ancestry from Africa.
@azar78345able ....I don't know where you got your info but I am of Garifuna ancestry and yes that includes African ancestry! I am not ashamed of my ancestors so if someone thinks I'm African I do not get offended because that is my ancestry. Garifuna ppl are a combination of races, that's the truth.
@butifuldrm I agree with you to the fullest extent Garifuna peopl are of african descent Africans are not only descendents of the arawaks but also of the west africans of the yuroba tribe and ebo tribes in nigeria. how many indian or light skin garifunas are there compared to dark skin garifunas? i mean come on that was silly of azar to even say
@azar78345able They have more than dark skin, they are predominately African in phenotype. African Americans look admixed, not these people. Sorry, but I cannot see any Amerindian admixture in the least bit. They don't look nothing like a *zambo.* I'm not saying it is not there, just that it is a very small component. Their halopgroups I would believe would show African, YDNA and mtDNA.
@Gentilejedi DNA studies have been done on Garinagu throughout the diaspora and results came back as 74%African,22.8%Amerindian,and 2.2%European. Of course this mary vary from person to person as these are just averages. The same study showed that some of our Garinagu people have more european blood than the so called Latinos that live in the same areas as us!
@Gentilejedi DNA studies have shown us to be 74%African, 22.8% amerindian, 2.2% european. You are failing to realize that the native tribes that we mixed with already possessed very so called " african" features, as far as full lips, wide noses, etc etc. It would only take a few generations of mixture for the dominant traits to take over.
LONG STORY SHORT.....YOU...YES YOU ARE THE REMNANT OF THE MOST HIGH G-D. HE'S COMING BACK FOR HIS LOST SHEEP..SCATTERED TO THE 4 CORNERs OF THE EARTH...AND WHOEVER WORSHIPS HIM IN SPIRT AND IN TRUTH..
Journals of explorers in Florida, the islands, including Colombus mention finding Hebrew writing among the people. (Decalog stone and many others) Colombus even used 2nd Esdras as proof in his letter to the Queen. He knew people were there. They knew the earth was round the bible says so. (Isa 40:22)
2nd Esdras(Ezra) gives details of when 10 northern tribes of Isreal left captivity and crossed the ocean to land that was never inhabited. Sinnim (Australia) was the first = the ABORIGINES and I believe the word is Ahura which means hidden land (America) = Indians, Arawak etc.
These people were not decended from Ham as we were taught. They were not african. They came from SHEM not Ham. They did not mix with the Africans...but eventully they did forget thier ways (Jer. 12:7, 17:4)
Also If you ever read 1st and 2nd Chronicles Isreal was always in trouble. In 721 BC. G-D gave Israel over to Assyrian Captivity. In the Apocrypha (which was included in the Original 1611 KJV of the Bible)
The Garifuna...from Ibo and west Africa migrated from Jerusalem, Isreal in 70 AD. The Ibo tribe called the "Asante" name means people from the burning city...ie Jerusalem when it was seiged. They are the tribe of Judah. Thier DNA has been accepted by Isreal but due to race problems they will not return. Jesus, Yeshua, Yeshia, was from the tribe of Judah (Heb.7:14)
To Senor Flores, with the name of a Spanish conquistador, i am not stunned at the British-ness. be it 1523 or 1624, ain't nothing new about Y'all for me. I have Ma Akan name and Ma Carib Silver, i was Born in The Land of Kalinago with Caboney and Galibi Ancestry. but that does not make me or ma Granny THE authority on any culture. Peace to Garifuna, remember Home is Home where ever Your Soul-Nest Rest. BLACK CARIB & YELLOW CARIB 4EVA! Peace to Taino for Arawak Lives in me always.
@BrokePimpStyles Lol Hilarious! Never claimed to be an"authority" on the subject. Merely stating my credentials as to how a came about the info presented. My grandfather wasnt just "Garifuna" but he was a scholar on the subject matter that wrote 12+ books on our people, language, and history. The information therefore doesnt come from european sources but it comes from family stories handed down generation to generation.
Thank you for this video. If one more person tries to deny both side of our culture. I think I was gonna scream. We are a mixed racial tribe , just look at many of our features. I am not african nor am I carib, I am both (Garifuna). Yes they are other people mixed with black and carib but the difference is that the Garifunas were a large group that mixed lived together and made their own language. Were exiled from St.Vincent to Roatan(sp?), the island own by Honduras after they lost the war.
@Blazemess the original caribs refered to themselves as the Kalinagu or Kalipuna. With the introduction of african cultures and pronounciation of the same language these words became the Garinagu or Garifuna.Yes we are one in the same people only difference being most people who refer to themselves with the names begining with the letters G tend to have a higher concentration of african blood then do the ones who refer to themselves as Kalinagu or Kalipuna.
@Blazemess as far as the cannibalism. that fact is highly debatable. Actual accounts of it are scarce and reasons behind reports of such doings are questionable. It is thought that maybe cannibalism was practiced as a part of something that was intertwined with our religion and spirituality. But me knowing what i know about the practice of dugu and our pre-colombian spirituality i find it extremely hard to find any truth in the accusation.
So from reading your statement it seems that your under the perception that the garifuna language wasnt origanlly Mende or Malian originally, and if carib is derived from latin spanish and not the kalipuna or garifuna language why use it to define our people at all, plus carib is on the books meaning canibal, Look words have power and the certain worlds have a low frequency vibration that when said put a spell on you and leaves you in a zombie like state
Carib happens to be one of those trigger words ya dig. look we know who we are, we know what we origianaly called ourselves so why use a corrupted word such as carib any longer.
@rahdeal ok we as CARIBS use alot of different words to describe ourselves. This is no different then if you are in the states and someone as where you are at you would say Texas or New York or California. You dont use some ancient name that noone knows. Even someone who KNOWS the ancient term would use the Common term FIRST. Then they would elaborate with the less common term.
@rahdeal The Garifuna language definitely is not mande or west african by any means. There are elements of the language that come from our west african roots but the languaage itself is for the most part ARAWAKAN/CARIB. For example one who is fluent in Garifuna could even today go into a pure Arawakan or Carib village and have very little trouble if any at all understanding. Drop the same person of anywhere you choose in africa and when it comes to language they would be completely LOST!
Can u explain just one thing for me, how are u calling your self Garifuna and carib at the same time, when carib is translated to mean canibal. Then again on second thought by looking at your depictions on the vid you just might be a carib. The music is great though.
@rahdeal ok the word Cannibal COMES from the spanish word for the Caribs!
Not the other way around. We didnt hear the word cannibal and then name ourselves after the word the spanish hear the name we were calling ourselves and came up with the word cannibal. NOW How do i call myself Carib and Garifuna at the same time. Well to put it plain and simple once again CARIB and GARIFUNA are variations of the SAME WORD.One is englishized and the other is closer to what we originally called ourselves
So from reading your statement it seems that your under the perception that the garifuna language wasnt origanlly Mende or Malian originally, and if carib is derived from latin/spanish not kalipuna or garifuna why use it to define ourselves.
@rahdeal We were originally the KALINAGU which when the infusion of african language came along it changed to GARINAGU. In our language when you translate this into plural for it changes to KALIPUNA or GARIFUNA. This is the word we use when speaking of ourselves as a whole. Now the word CARIB is a latin>spanish, derivitive of the word they were originally hear us call ourselves. Like i said its not the other way around the learned the word from us not us from them.
Take note, that this great African accomplishment took place before Columbus accidentally landed in the Caribbean august 12th, 1492. The Africans came in peace, sharing their knowledge with the red Caribs and Arawaks. The Africans who eventually remained in the Caribbean intermarried into the Caribs and Arawaks. Since the Africans have different characteristics from that of their hosts, their offspring were dark in complexion, had coarse hair, a slender build and an average of 5 feet 9 inches in
"In the early 1300s, the Mali Empire was the leading country in technology. King Abubakari, brother of Mansa Musa the emperor, ventured on a journey to expand trade and commerce with other countries. With over two thousand sailors, Abubakari sailed away with ships laden with precious stones, gold, fruits, plants and agricultural tools. During the journey, these brave sailors separated and drifted apart. As a result they landed in the Americas and the Caribbean. cont
I also have a wonderful book purchased from wal mart called 101 things everyone should know about african american history surprisingly it makes mention of african presence pre Columbus
this is something that has been left out we are always made to believe Columbus sailed the ocean before anyone else which is a lie
Educational but most people keep forgetting that the Caribs had already intermingled with Africans before the slave trade. Africans from Mali used to make trades with the Caribs and some of them stayed over in the Carribean and married the Caribs. Yes it's true when Columbus sailed the ocean blue Africans had already done it Please do your history.
Owenbu seremein nia bun ibiri, luagu sun fe le bichugubei ya. I am happy to see correct information posted about us the Garifuna nation. I cant wait for the second video.
P.S. another major African tribe that made up the Garifuna is the Kongo. We get the words Mutu , Yaya and Pinda from them
Thanks again brother. May God and our ancestors Bless you.
wats up bro. thanks for the knowledge. I been trying to get some info on the garifuna people. My great grand mother was half carib, and my great grandfather was a quarter carib. My family is from St Vincent and the Grenadines, one of the islands the Caribs Indians migrated to

Do you know if the Carib and Arawak people were enemies or were they basically the same because Garifuana is mainly an arawak language right?
Blazemess 1 year ago
So are you saying the Carib people are the Garifuana people? And speaking of Cannibalism was it true that we practiced such act?
Blazemess 1 year ago
@Blazemess the original caribs refered to themselves as the Kalinagu or Kalipuna. With the introduction of african cultures and pronounciation of the same language these words became the Garinagu or Garifuna.Yes we are one in the same people only difference being most people who refer to themselves with the names begining with the letters G tend to have a higher concentration of african blood then do the ones who refer to themselves as Kalinagu or Kalipuna.
txus4sho 1 year ago
@Blazemess as far as the cannibalism. that fact is highly debatable. Actual accounts of it are scarce and reasons behind reports of such doings are questionable. It is thought that maybe cannibalism was practiced as a part of something that was intertwined with our religion and spirituality. But me knowing what i know about the practice of dugu and our pre-colombian spirituality i find it extremely hard to find any truth in the accusation.

So from reading your statement it seems that your under the perception that the garifuna language wasnt origanlly Mende or Malian originally, and if carib is derived from latin spanish and not the kalipuna or garifuna language why use it to define our people at all, plus carib is on the books meaning canibal, Look words have power and the certain worlds have a low frequency vibration that when said put a spell on you and leaves you in a zombie like state
rahdeal 1 year ago
Carib happens to be one of those trigger words ya dig. look we know who we are, we know what we origianaly called ourselves so why use a corrupted word such as carib any longer.
rahdeal 1 year ago
@rahdeal ok we as CARIBS use alot of different words to describe ourselves. This is no different then if you are in the states and someone as where you are at you would say Texas or New York or California. You dont use some ancient name that noone knows. Even someone who KNOWS the ancient term would use the Common term FIRST. Then they would elaborate with the less common term.
txus4sho 1 year ago

The music is great though.
rahdeal 1 year ago
@rahdeal ok the word Cannibal COMES from the spanish word for the Caribs!
Not the other way around. We didnt hear the word cannibal and then name ourselves after the word the spanish hear the name we were calling ourselves and came up with the word cannibal. NOW How do i call myself Carib and Garifuna at the same time. Well to put it plain and simple once again CARIB and GARIFUNA are variations of the SAME WORD.One is englishized and the other is closer to what we originally called ourselves
txus4sho 1 year ago

rahdeal 1 year ago

As a result they landed in the Americas and the Caribbean. cont

What I quote below is from the Garinet website
I also have a wonderful book purchased from wal mart called 101 things everyone should know about african american history surprisingly it makes mention of african presence pre Columbus
this is something that has been left out we are always made to believe Columbus sailed the ocean before anyone else which is a lie
napturaldiva904 2 years ago
Educational but most people keep forgetting that the Caribs had already intermingled with Africans before the slave trade. Africans from Mali used to make trades with the Caribs and some of them stayed over in the Carribean and married the Caribs. Yes it's true when Columbus sailed the ocean blue Africans had already done it Please do your history.
