Tari saheb is the best. Zakir Hussain is more known but does not have the imagination in his play that Ustad Tari has. And I dislike the fusion stuff that Ustad Zakir regularly does. I like western music and of course, i like Indian music, but put them together, and its more or less garbage!

I know enough to distinguish a good sound from a bad sound. Some Pakistanis get offended by negative comments but you have to understand that there are no boundaries when it comes to music. Harmonium for example is from Europe, Tabla is from Arabic countries, Tar came from Persia. Listen to ustad shaukat hussain khan and Ustad Mehdi Hassan, Listen to Zakir and hariharran. You will notice the difference. Tari is excellent mechanically but he doesn't have the touch, the calmness and the softness.

How can you put down Tari Khan. I am not pakistani but I appreciate him very much he is super talented. I don't think a tabla player should be judged because of his country rather he should be evaluated based on his skill. Tari Khan's skill is invincible.

their is only one tabla player alive now, who plays solo,classical vocal accompaniment, classical instrumental accompaniment, light classical accompaniment i.e( thumri, dadra, kafi), ghazal, geet, qawwali and folk. His name is Ustad Tari Khan. all senior tabla players are respectable but Neither Ustad Zakir Hussain nor Ustad Tafo Khansahib can play all these asnaaf(kinds) of accompaniment.
