I think that Bette is the perfect Mama Rose; she shows the drive and determination, leading right through to the bitter disappointend and eventual admittance that she did in fact do it for her self - also her vocals are killer in this film.
Well...I prefer Patti as much as I do love Bette...I think Bette is a superb singer, but I am not sold on her in this role. I'm just not. I like Patti's coarseness and brutality in Mama Rose and everything else to me seems to cheat out that aspect of Mama's character.
what i absolutely love about this telemovie is the fact that none of the vocals were studio recorded... the film was shot in sequence with the actors singing on set, so no lip synch-ing... that's y during Rose's Turn Bette's voice sounds a little more worse-for-wear than it did during Some People.
I think that this song is such a trademark of Merman, that Bette didn't bother remaking it. She kinda paid an homage to Ethel, I mean there is no doubt she was purposefully singing like her here.
Still quite nice I think. Not amazing, but its not terrible.
Sounds like she's channeling Merman her at some points, and not in a good way. Arthur Laurents, who wrote Gypsy's book and directed several of its revivals, said he simply hated this version on the musical. I can't really disagree with him. Although, Bette is "Rose's Turn" is rather enjoyable.
They need to re-release this DVD, so it's more widely available. it's wonderful in ever aspect!
