  • Great video

  • I love that first scene of "First of the Few" where RJ Mitchell is sketching a bird. He had to have been the most brilliant aircraft designer in history. Tragic that he died so young. Who knows what he would have come up with after the war. Imagine a Supermarine transatlantic airliner.

  • @yesanded Good point.

  • How much to buy a spitfire as of today?

  • @Chairmandragon1982 Depends on what your looking for, A few companys make spitfire replicas of 2/3 size and full size. I know a britsih company that makes full size replicas there cost..About 1.5 Million USD.

  • Greatest plane of WW2

  • @TalonMercenary Nonsense

  • @strathpipe What would you say then? Mustang? Pftttt

  • sounds a bit like a merlin, but must say not sure myself.

  • wow it is a toss up love the the mossy and the spit, beautiful planes, and then u have the hurricane, but she was a bomber

  • fav plane, difficult to say loved the mozzy spit, and omg the hurricane

  • Why did they call this plane the SPITFIRE (Im probably thinking of the HURRICANE on something).

There were different variants of Great Britain war planes. Personally I liked the ones with the cannons on the wings but if you see the style GREAT BRITAIN had. You will see how much fire power and rounds those wings laid down range.

  • Wow!... Beautiful sound, beautiful aircraft. You captured it wonderfully. Thanks for sharing!!!

  • its a mk IX and its a merlin engine

  • Beautiful sound. Thanks for sharing.

  • AS LONG AS YOUR NOT TOO LATE CALL ME SPITFIRE!!

  • best aircraft off ww2

  • *sniff* so beautiful.

  • nice

  • can a vehicle have a soul? yes ................

  • Merlin in Mk 9.. Griffon turns counter clockwise from the pilots point of view..

  • While the Mustang is the best all around, the early Spitfires ARE the most beautiful aircraft ever made. Hold a model in your hand and you'll see its more avian than anything else...it just wants to fly.

  • @jfos357 the mustange was a development of the spitfire, an airframe with the merlin screwed in

it was awful before it got merlin....

  • @Siberian68 Actually it was very good, but it lacked high altitude performance because of the Allison engine. It was a totally indigenous American design at the request of the British, but it was also adopted by the USAAF. Once the Merlin was added in place of the Allison, it really reached its true potential as one of the greatest fighters of the war.

The Spit will always be my favourite, though.

  • that was a very slow take off! he should have had hiw wheels up as soon as he left the ground on full throttle!

  • @BMWe23aut

No, I checked the registration numbers and this model is a Spitfire H.F.IXE, and uses a Merlin 70 Engine. While there are Griffon engined Spitfires still flying, this one is running a Merlin. final

  • lancaster bomber ! 4 merlins chilin out

  • It's not a Merlin, it's a Griffon!!

  • @GazzaFJ27

No, I checked the registration numbers and this model is a Spitfire H.F.IXE, and uses a Merlin 70 Engine. While there are Griffon engined Spitfires still flying, this one is running a Merlin.

  • @propfan2k ok, i stand corrected!

  • @GazzaFJ27 dude, thats a Merlin, the nose is way to small to have a Griffon in it lol

  • @GazzaFJ27 Hi. Watch the following video and notice the distintive profile nose of this Griffon engined Spitfire Mk XIX. Cheers

    watch?v=3EcCYA68m_w&feature=related

  • @GazzaFJ27 It's actually a Merlin Engine :)

  • I am English (prefer that to British) and the sight and sound of one of these beauriful fighters will bring me to a stand to watch every time. RV Mitchell I salute you, the Brunel of the sky!

  • @leeandtel RJ Mitchell!

  • Hurricane! A Great Plane!

  • i think i'm in love......

  • Who needs The Battle for Britain theme when you already have all the soundtrack you need for this

  • Spitfire+mosquito+hurricane= what London blitz

  • Quality British Engineering

  • ELEW TINHA DUAS METRALHADORAS .50..^~

  • I suppose its the sound of the Spitfire that gave me the impression that all fighters during that era sounded that way

  • I love Supermarine Spitfire!

  • Woop Woop Regional Mitchel from Stoke-On-Trent, He lived down the road from where I live :D

  • Strange how the Spitfire's eliptical wings mirror that other iconic weapon in the legends of english armour, the longbow. I was born not long after the war and grew up revering the Spitfire and Hurricane pilots of whom Churchill spoke so memorably.

  • What a beautiful noise.

  • I want to fly a spitfire one day! I want to know what my grandfather I never met, cause he died, saw. we never met but we have a lot in common. we never met but i'm sure that we would like eachother. R.I.P. william charlton

  • My big dream: fly in a spitfire!

  • I like the P-51B,C Stang's

but ill still take a Spitfire.

two different plane's two different job's,

  • Awsome!

  • Thank you for this video. My father was a Spitfire mechanic in WW2.

  • @UpMyOwn

    ohh is that right?

    really neat.

he would know all about the desighn of the plane and why mitchell made it that way .

  • Probably the most beautiful aircraft ever!

  • my grandfather built these engines xxx

  • a thing of pure beauty...........

  • I'd lvoe to fly one of these planes...but my fear of heights would be an issue :P

  • THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THIS I EVER SEEN :)

  • The Spitfire had no bad viewing angle. It reeked of elegance. Before the battle of Britain the Germans dismissed it as a "toy". This toy airplane became the terror of the Luftwaffe. Seeing those elliptical wings flash by made more than one Luftwaffe pilot need a change of underwear.

  • She turns into a beautiful butterfly once she loses her legs.

  • Jump in the cockpit an start up the engines :)

  • Nothing quite sounds like a MERLIN!

  • I saw a spitfire yesterday was circling my college campus came round about 6 times literally and it was close too. No idea where it came from or why it was there. Any ideas people? It was in Weybridge, UK.

  • @hustlergoon About 15 yrs ago I was driving to pick up a girl. I've a convertible. It was summer. I heard an unmistakeable sound.... The hair on the back of my neck went up & I pulled over to the side of the road. About 500 ft up, DIRECTLY overhead, was a Spit, complete w/ the fairings for the cannons intact. It was the first one I'd seen flying. I later learned it was a privately owned Mk XVI with the Packard-built Merlin.

The girl was unimpressed. I think I only saw her once more.

  • I often wonder if it's being raised in Britain that instills some kind of love for this aircraft? I don't know if seeing it has the same impact on anybody else beyond WWII history buffs and aircraft enthusiasts.

Indoctrinated to love it? Maybe. But it's such a gorgeous plane.

  • @UnitedKingdomify I'm not British, but I know exactly what you mean. What I've always thought is that the plane is so beautiful, so graceful I almost have to keep reminding myself it was one of the deadliest fighters of the war. It almost seems too beautiful to be a weapon!

  • @wilmanric1 hawker hurricane killed more jerrys

  • @wilmanric1 In fact it was not designed to be a weapon. It was firstly designed to race in the Schneider Trophy by RJ Mitchell. It was later adapted to carry weapons. So the plane is not necessarily a weapon. Some others are designed to be platforms for weapons. Even so, that does not make a plane a weapon. But I understand what you mean. It's too bad that most of these beautiful birds were only designed with the intention of destruction. Cheers

  • @smokemagnet You are incorrect, the Schneider trophy was for seaplanes. It is true that the Supermarine S6 was designed by Mitchell and some of the lessons learnt in the develpment of the S6 were used in the Spitfire but the Spitfire was never an entrant in the race. The last race was in 1931 and the Spitfire firstflew in 1936. Two facts that may also be of interest are the first Spitfire was a different aircraft the Supermarine 224 and also a Spitfire flew as a seaplane on floats

  • That wonderful Rolls royce Merlin engine ! My Uncle Harry flew a Hurricane in WWII and he was always envious.

  • @greenroadster It was the Merlin that gave the American P-51 Mustang the performance it needed to give the Allies air superiority over Germany during WW2.

  • There is something that sounds better than a Rolls Royce Merlin engine...... 2 of them in a DeHavilland Mosquito.

  • @kiwigunner How can you not mention the 4 Merlins of the Avro Lancaster?

  • The noise that made every German shit himself.God bless the Spitfire, and the brave men who flew them.We owe our freedom to them all.

  • awesome plane, spitfire and messerschmitt bf 109 emil, they're well matched:D

  • the guardian of britain and her skys during world war 2 long live britainia

  • The WWII spitfire and other aircraft pilots were amazing. No computers to lock on to the enemy or to assist you in almost everything you did, It was you and you alone that made this great flying machine do it all or you were shot down.

Great pilots of the day and a great aircraft.

  • Damn! Just to take a tail-dragger of the ground is pure talent.

  • my grandad got shot down 8 times in spitfires cheeky bastard survived them all haha...bit obvious..lol

  • @mynameisliamhahahaha

Really? Wow... ya I would of loved flying planes too and asked for another plane hahaha. Great Britain pilots held off the Luftwaffle once again like in WW1. You stopped the German air superiorty. So skill was in Great Britains favor? Or was it the planes?

  • At Duxford in 2010 I went to one of the air shows (i cant rmemeber its exact name) and they had atleast 17 spitfires and hurcanes fly over in formation, it was amazing.

  • Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane.... need i say ANYTHING more?

  • @whowantsabighug

yeah you do.... hawker tempest, hawker typhoon, de haviland mosquito

  • doesnt sound right

  • 2 former Nazi fighter pilots don't like this. They recognize that plane as the one that shot down Hans. And Friedrich. And Otto. And Max......

  • @EMT308 and Helmut and Karl... poor poor Karl

  • @willbaboon Now that is funny.

  • Wow, just wow. Though I'm a great fan of the ME 109, I must say, the Spitfire is something special. Maybe not better, but surely a great view:)

  • If possible, i'd want to put a spitfire engine into a truck

  • p51 and the spit......on 2 planes that made the nazis...shit them selfs.........

  • spit fire and the p51...man on man...tuff choice....you just cant...the greatest 2 planes ever..........

  • Three former ME 109 pilots didn't like being reminded of the past. Spitfires and P-51s are my ultimate favs.

Merlin powered, brothers in arms, forever!

  • SHALOM VERY NICE VIDEOS THANKS !!!!!

  • That merlin sounds so beautiful. I almost flagged this for sexual content.

  • @RainbowManification who needs viagra right????"?

  • @RainbowManification When car porn is not enough ...

  • you try telling die-hard ME 109 fans that-they will never admit that Spit was superior, and they still even believe they won the Battle of Britain!!!!!!!?

  • I remember seeing my first spitfire when i was 5 with my brother and i still havent forgotten the noise that it made nor all the ribbing my brother got because his name was RJ Mitchell. The finest fighter plane ever built by a mile others might be faster or have a longer range but none have the soul of this plane which with the hurricane saved a nation.I hope they keep flying which is where they belong not in a musuem.

  • DAT BIRD.

  • the ULTIMATE war-bird

  • Spitfires are the only things Chuck Norris respects.

  • Whenever the chance comes up to see these rare birds at an airshow it is always a special treat but that is somewhat less when the event is at a modern concrete airfield with large commercial aircraft parked all around and all the other visual clutter.

When you come here to Geneseo you find a simple grass field with few buildings.

These fantastic aircraft can be seen in their historical setting with nothing to obscure the view, just grass and trees in the distance.

Here you can disappear in time

  • Best looking aircraft ever created.

  • There will never be such an amazing aircraft. The Spitfire always has and always will be...."The true pretty guardian of the skies"

  • can someone tell me does anyone still makes the spitfire, can a person buy one, where, and if someone knows what is the price of one of these :) please

  • @SERDAROTmkd I don't think anyone makes them any more, the ones that are left are ones that have been restored...and if you want to buy one, you need at least 6 million of some where in that region... Sorry Pal, I already looked at buying one.. :(

  • @Poltise thanks man, maybe you will be interested in this,i found a company in Australia that makes 80% replicas that are flyable. supermarineaircraft . com

  • omg,i love that sound

  • i'd stick to the typhoon personally...

  • Wish i had one..........

  • I bet the germans crapped themselves when they heard this coming. The engine noise makes my hairs stand on end lol

  • Most beautiful aircraft ever built.

  • Well, no one did the cobra on the Spitfire but me. hehe

  • some people don't really appreciate just how powerful an engine like that is...

if you used full power on take off it would flip the plane around and break it!

  • WOW. I have some Spits on my Ms FS9 Flight simulator.

The video of this baby is going on my iPhone.

  • Supermarine Spit Fire.... It has a curve of a very fine lady.

  • one of these flew over my city recently. I think it was the battle of britain day, I dont remember. It was flying low over the buildings, and the noise was beautiful, but also slightly scary.

  • merlin is god!

  • A great vid, as has been said already NO MUSIC and that makes all the difference, a sweet sweet sound.

  • lol beautiful note...... Rolls Royce Merlin... cant beat that sound

  • The Spitfire was the finest fighter of WWII....next to the P51 of course. Yes, I'm partial for being a yank, I know lol. Thanks for the video.

  • @gmccord1970 u are quite right in what you said, the spitfire was brilliant, however lacked the range of P-51 but was more manouverable.. but both formitable aircraft and leading edge design for their time.

  • A flying piece of art.

  • so fine, now i know why i like my ducati, cheap.

  • This aircraft flying is so sexy, it flies like a bird.

  • I always thought the Griffin sounded a lot meatier and a bit more poke to it.

  • I'm not British, but this must be the most pretty airplane of ww2

  • isso ai foi um aviao da 2º guerra...

  • The GREATEST Aircraft of all time!!!

  • BEST PLANE EVER!

  • How much is spitfire ?

  • @plevia34 £250,000

  • The sound of rolls royse

  • The note from the engine is superb!

  • 01:43 Above the Spitfire! OVNI??? o_O

  • One of the best British planes evar!

  • @92TheChosenOne92 the best plane FULL STOP

  • Listten to that enginee <3

  • Il est magnifique...

  • Love the sound and the look of that Mark IX Spitfire.

  • It's strange how a gentle curve of the wing can make a machine so gorgeous to look at. We are so simple minded really. Anything with curves turns our heads. Glad that it does too :)

  • The Spitfire making its own beautiful music. Thanks for uploading this video.

  • Still, after all these years, the fastest thing with a propeller.

  • Ain't she sweet!

  • aaaggghhh actung schpit fire..it is no match for my ME109

  • @GIANTreed1 it was, we won the battle of Britain you fool!

  • With Rolls-Royce engine and everything :-D

  • It's beauty :-)

  • Turn the Volume up!......the best sound in the world....thanks for keeping the merlin sound alive....i much prefer this merlin to the later growl of the griffon....awesome!

  • salut ...un avion mytique....bravo aux pilotes et mécanos ...!!!!

  • Brilliant. No wonder why this plane was so successful. The BF-109 pitted against this would certainly make quite a show!

  • Work of art. Man how much I'd love to win the lottery!!

  • Man that noise.... Pure filth!! Practically porn for an aviation enthusiast!

  • @cainanuk Well, I wouldn't call it filth - more like the Elle McPHerson of the porn world - your ultra sexy and ellegant woman that you would give your left nut to root.

  • There is no finer aircraft.....

Wasn't this the year that it had a prop-strike and it was held up in Geneseo for a while for a replacement prop and engine inspection?

  • Yes, I believe that is correct. If you watch the F4U Corsair video, you can see the Spit parked alongside the runway, waiting for a tow, when the Corsair is landing.

  • My dad flew a Mk IX in the RAF.

  • No its a Mk9 Spit, still had the Merlin. Later version tho, uprated to about 1600 hp i think.

  • It's got a Rolls Royce Griffin engine in it, not a Merlin, but it's still class.

  • the sound gives me the shivers, that beautiful it is!

  • Nothing will ever come close to sounding this good! Legendary plane, legendary engine. It will be an icon for all history!

  • P51 Mustang and the Spit Fire. beautiful sounds.

  • favorite sound in the world

  • Spitfire and Hurricane the saviors of Britain! Long live the RAF and the lads who sacrificed it all.

  • And don't forget Chain Home and Radar, and Sir Winston Chirchill.

  • coolest aircraft engine noise ever!

  • The speed, the sounds, the grace of this plane, there just something so amazing about it.

I've seen on fly last year, and was blow away by it...if only I could fly, even if just for a minute

  • hey i live in avon the next town over i go to this every year love the flix

  • As clarkson said, no other machine ever created can match the soul of a spitfire

  • @chapmasi I agree, but just look at die hard Luftwaffe fans, saying the Spitfire was inferior to ME/BF 109

and FW190 for WHOLE OF ww2!
