I love that first scene of "First of the Few" where RJ Mitchell is sketching a bird. He had to have been the most brilliant aircraft designer in history. Tragic that he died so young. Who knows what he would have come up with after the war. Imagine a Supermarine transatlantic airliner.
@Chairmandragon1982 Depends on what your looking for, A few companys make spitfire replicas of 2/3 size and full size. I know a britsih company that makes full size replicas there cost..About 1.5 Million USD.
Why did they call this plane the SPITFIRE (Im probably thinking of the HURRICANE on something).
There were different variants of Great Britain war planes. Personally I liked the ones with the cannons on the wings but if you see the style GREAT BRITAIN had. You will see how much fire power and rounds those wings laid down range.
While the Mustang is the best all around, the early Spitfires ARE the most beautiful aircraft ever made. Hold a model in your hand and you'll see its more avian than anything else...it just wants to fly.
@Siberian68 Actually it was very good, but it lacked high altitude performance because of the Allison engine. It was a totally indigenous American design at the request of the British, but it was also adopted by the USAAF. Once the Merlin was added in place of the Allison, it really reached its true potential as one of the greatest fighters of the war.
No, I checked the registration numbers and this model is a Spitfire H.F.IXE, and uses a Merlin 70 Engine. While there are Griffon engined Spitfires still flying, this one is running a Merlin. final

I am English (prefer that to British) and the sight and sound of one of these beauriful fighters will bring me to a stand to watch every time. RV Mitchell I salute you, the Brunel of the sky!
Strange how the Spitfire's eliptical wings mirror that other iconic weapon in the legends of english armour, the longbow. I was born not long after the war and grew up revering the Spitfire and Hurricane pilots of whom Churchill spoke so memorably.
I want to fly a spitfire one day! I want to know what my grandfather I never met, cause he died, saw. we never met but we have a lot in common. we never met but i'm sure that we would like eachother. R.I.P. william charlton
The Spitfire had no bad viewing angle. It reeked of elegance. Before the battle of Britain the Germans dismissed it as a "toy". This toy airplane became the terror of the Luftwaffe. Seeing those elliptical wings flash by made more than one Luftwaffe pilot need a change of underwear.
I saw a spitfire yesterday was circling my college campus came round about 6 times literally and it was close too. No idea where it came from or why it was there. Any ideas people? It was in Weybridge, UK.
@hustlergoon About 15 yrs ago I was driving to pick up a girl. I've a convertible. It was summer. I heard an unmistakeable sound.... The hair on the back of my neck went up & I pulled over to the side of the road. About 500 ft up, DIRECTLY overhead, was a Spit, complete w/ the fairings for the cannons intact. It was the first one I'd seen flying. I later learned it was a privately owned Mk XVI with the Packard-built Merlin.
The girl was unimpressed. I think I only saw her once more.
I often wonder if it's being raised in Britain that instills some kind of love for this aircraft? I don't know if seeing it has the same impact on anybody else beyond WWII history buffs and aircraft enthusiasts.
Indoctrinated to love it? Maybe. But it's such a gorgeous plane.
@UnitedKingdomify I'm not British, but I know exactly what you mean. What I've always thought is that the plane is so beautiful, so graceful I almost have to keep reminding myself it was one of the deadliest fighters of the war. It almost seems too beautiful to be a weapon!
@wilmanric1 In fact it was not designed to be a weapon. It was firstly designed to race in the Schneider Trophy by RJ Mitchell. It was later adapted to carry weapons. So the plane is not necessarily a weapon. Some others are designed to be platforms for weapons. Even so, that does not make a plane a weapon. But I understand what you mean. It's too bad that most of these beautiful birds were only designed with the intention of destruction. Cheers
@smokemagnet You are incorrect, the Schneider trophy was for seaplanes. It is true that the Supermarine S6 was designed by Mitchell and some of the lessons learnt in the develpment of the S6 were used in the Spitfire but the Spitfire was never an entrant in the race. The last race was in 1931 and the Spitfire firstflew in 1936. Two facts that may also be of interest are the first Spitfire was a different aircraft the Supermarine 224 and also a Spitfire flew as a seaplane on floats
@greenroadster It was the Merlin that gave the American P-51 Mustang the performance it needed to give the Allies air superiority over Germany during WW2.
The WWII spitfire and other aircraft pilots were amazing. No computers to lock on to the enemy or to assist you in almost everything you did, It was you and you alone that made this great flying machine do it all or you were shot down.
Really? Wow... ya I would of loved flying planes too and asked for another plane hahaha. Great Britain pilots held off the Luftwaffle once again like in WW1. You stopped the German air superiorty. So skill was in Great Britains favor? Or was it the planes?
At Duxford in 2010 I went to one of the air shows (i cant rmemeber its exact name) and they had atleast 17 spitfires and hurcanes fly over in formation, it was amazing.
you try telling die-hard ME 109 fans that-they will never admit that Spit was superior, and they still even believe they won the Battle of Britain!!!!!!!?

The speed, the sounds, the grace of this plane, there just something so amazing about it.
I've seen on fly last year, and was blow away by it...if only I could fly, even if just for a minute
