  • i just finished installing my new floors and i really need something to put on top to protect it from scratches and maybe add a little shine. i want something that will last a long time and preferably water based. hit reply, thanks

  • @robertdeuce I would use Minwax Water Based Polyurethane for Floors or Minwax Water Based Oil-Modified Polyurethane. Both are available in gloss, semi-gloss or satin sheen for the desired shine you want. 4 coats are recommended for hardwood floors. Always follow the directions on the package.

  • I am thinking about using Minwax and sealer on my wood deck in the backyard, would I follow the three step program you show on the video and would I need more coats of the sealer as there will be foot traffic on the wood? Thanks Steve

  • @dithel001

Helmsman is not recommended for deck application, the coating is designed to expand and contract with temperature change making it soft and not suitable for foot traffic. If the deck is made from an exotic wood you could use Minwax Teak Oil. If the deck is made of standard materials Thompson's Waterseal Advance will protect your deck from water and ultra violet damage with one thin coat but will not leave a glossy film on the surface.

    That's the Finish Ralph

  • @dithel001 I have used Helmsman on my front porch with much success. When I refinished the porch surface three years ago I originally applied three coats. I do reapply a touch up coat every year or so to maintain its luster. I was advised it wasn't the best product to use but I am glad I didn't listen. My porch is covered and sun protected, maybe that is why it has worked so well.

  • @dithel001 Although Helmsman is recommended for exterior use it does have limitations. One factor to consider is that all sides of the wood surface need to be coated with Helmsman to give complete protection from moisture. If all sides have not been coated moisture can wick into the wood from the untreated side and with sun exposure the moisture can come up to the surface causing the film to peel.

  • Hey ralph I am going to polyurethane my last coat what should I do after I sand the last coat how do I take the whitish marks off from sanding should I buff the door with something

  • @aerostal1

Thank you for your inquiry. When applying multiple coats of Minwax Polyurethane or Helmsman Spar Urethane scuff sanding is required only in between coats. Use a fine 220 grit sandpaper between coats. When the final coat is applied all sanding marks should disappear and no further sanding is required.

  • Hi im trying to polyurethane my exterior front doors I set my stain I just wanted to know when applying helmsman should I sand between coats or no thank you

  • @aerostal1

When applying Polyurethane or Spar Urethane between coats it should be lightly sanded with a 220 grit sand paper, wipe off the dust and apply next coat, 3-4 coats are recommended.

  • I recently used a Minwax stain and Helmsman Spar Urethane on a birch hiking stick. The results were fantastic. Both Minwax products (stain and urethane) are high quality ... worth every cent!

You guys should post more videos to YouTube.

  • Thanks for the info. How many coats would you say it would take to get a real nice, glass like finish, such as most of the areas here on the bluenose ? I am doing oak flooring in the bed of a pick up truck and would love to get it as shiney as possible. Thanks

  • @MrBowtie13

It is recommended to start with at least 3 coats of Helmsman to achieve a protective finish. With each additional coat you can build up a thicker glossier finish. In the application that you are asking about I would understand it is an antique or show truck. the Helmsman product is ideal for protection against Ultra Violet rays, mildew and moisture. Note the finish is flexible so it flexes with temperature changes. This is only a concern if you plan to use the surface for hard wear.

  • Thanks for the demo. It makes me feel like maybe I can do it too.

  • Thank you Ralph
