Actually "sweatshop free" is a misnomer. Dov (AA) was fined for hiring illegal immigrants and thus paying them a lower fee and without benefits afforded to others. Additionally, the "workers" have ridiculous quotas/ marks they have to hit to get paid. So if you're one of the sewers you're assigned "x" design or a part of "x' design and have to turn over 100's if not 1000's per shift and often times miss the mark and have to forego lunch or other breaks to try to make it for that day.

American Apparel currently pays it's manufacturing workers about $11/hour. That's about $21K/year. But most of his workers are illegal which means many engage in identity theft by using some Americans SS# to work. They also pay very little if anything in income tax as most declare numerous exemptions on their W-4 meaning that hardly any taxes are deducted. Even the little SS tax they are paying is miniscule vs the cost of the social service freebies they receive for their anchor babies.
