The R4 (5.56mm ) replaced the R1 (7.62mm / .308 ) in the 1980's as the general service weapon. It was lighter, carried more rounds is stable in automatic fire mode and also more versatile.
Hi mate, back in the day if you've done your National Service were issued a service weapon as part of a standby duty programme if you lived in a border area. We had lot of insurgents in the 80's .
I had a Ruger Mini-14 for a while as well under civilian liscence.
Awful song. Absolute trash. Can't you find something more enlightened?

Does the SA Army still use, I believe it was the R1? If I remember correctly, that shot a .308.

Yep, it's our own ( South African) military copy - the R4. No it cannot exchange parts with the AK-47. The caliber is 5.56mm while the AK is 7.62.
Great weapon to fire. Perfect for controlled rapid fire. Does what it says on the tin.

@Beamster420 Correct. It was licensed and modified from the Israeli Galil. It incorporated an AK47 firing mechanism I believe.
