  • Please keep producing and advancing this project...this is what is needed, not more laws and other nonesensical means and measures to cripple humanity - we need to EDUCATE humanity. 'Nuff said...

  • fluke of the decade

  • The secret behind wolfram alpha escapes even Einstein himself.

  • Really awesome mathematical engine... Good for checking/computing furmulae. I wouldn't use it for anything else though.. I'm satisfied with Google.

  • I haven't tried it extensively yet if you spend a few hours with you could easily become an expert.

  • Numbers just are not my thing!!!

  • theen you are obsolete

  • a mathematical search engine?! NO FREAKIN WAY! I could probably use this for chemistry purposes...

  • need HELP, petition to get martials arts to grades k- 4th in schools with Tax money in honor of SANDRA CANTU., against MONSTERS.

  • awesome site by now ... Please add multilanguage support, dynamic graphic and cross references.

  • it was a really awesome video it probably took you guys forever to get that. great man i loved watching it keep getting your stuff out there.

  • Dear Stephen:

I appreciate your contribution to knowledge world but, when you'll release the spanish version? (or french, or german, etc.)

    Bravo! I say from Mexico.

  • haha that was definitly the funniest thing i have ever seen i have never luaghed so hard in my life like that hahah thanks guys ....

  • it´s great

I read about it in newsweek and inmediately look for it here

when this is real , many people will be very happy :) me among them

    keep it up

    best of luck

  • It also same what wikipedia!

  • As others have noted - having a centralized data base from which to draw upon leaves it open to criticism of manipulation and the truism - garbage in - garbage out.

As a tool however, it is an important step in the evolution of the internet. As a financial planner I am eager to apply its potential to Amortization Schedules, determining Convexity & Duration of bonds and the like.

Given its potential - I look forward to watching it evolve from curiosity to necessity.

  • That's not how it was presented te weeks and month before it was launched. Wolfram told us that he found a way to turn human language into numbers and use those numbers to extraxt data. What he didn't tell us is that this data is very limited. Type in something basic like "sunflower", all you get is latin names.

  • You say "I look forward to watching it evolve from curiosity to necessity. "

Well guess what? He told us that he worked on this principle for over 20 years.

If this is all he got then I can tell you that you won't see it evolve in your life time into anything but a basic number machine that can't even describe a flower or the CNN news station...sigh

  • I don't have a problem if it stays nothign but a "number engine", but that's not how he presented this,he had very huge claims.

Maybe you should check the reviews on his book, then you'll get an idea who this Wolfram really is...

  • Meh, at the time of the internet's creation it was more intra-net than the global giant it is today. Where it ends up in 10 years time is anyone's guess - but I have no doubt its current limitations will be addressed and some college kid may crack its logarithms to advance its application.

If it fails, however, then it fails - and the reasons for its failure may in fact be more valuable to our understanding than if it succeeds.

  • When then I wish you good luck waiting for the yeart 2075 that it actually works.

  • why wait ?

a lot of mistakes makes perfection.

  • Wolfram Alpha is great, I found out the direct distances between a lot of towns I was interested in.

If it gets support by those who posted information on wikipedia this thing will be the most important thing on the internet.

  • "Wolfram Alpha is great, I found out the direct distances between a lot of towns I was interested in."

Wow, really something people need to know...sigh

Try something like "wife tom cruise"

Or try CNN; not any mention of the news station, only dumb numbers again....rubbish

  • rj6v, you are really a pitiful pile of shit! You can suck googles sorry ass balls and die like a motther fuccking bitch! STOP being jealous of the POTENTIAL of wolframalpha and bash ur thrash talking to your own shiit google pls! Wat a jerk! dumb ass~

  • Swearing and name calling is just a reflection of ones lack of intelligence....sigh

  • murcia spain we are using wolfman alpha to teach english in InglesGarantizado.students look up meanings of words in WA and then report to the small class of 3 students. its fun and they learn alot. better than wikipedia.

    steve marcus

    InglesGarantizado

    murcia espana

  • murcia spain --> In Murcia Spain

    english - > English

    students look -> Students look

    its --> It's

alot. better than ---> a lot, better than

  • Las Malvinas son Argentinas!

  • Its nothing like google. Why are people comparing them? This doesnt link to any websites. Google is a web search engine. This is an information search or data center is some way.

The server is really slow atm but I think maybe its just because its still in testing

  • I tried wolframalphan and it fucking ROCKS!!! Google's lazy programmers listen up: you are GOING DOWN!!!!

this is basically going to be the SUPER Computer of the internet and FREE.

  • You posted that 2 days ago and guess what? Wolfram Alpha wasn't availble back then, so you're just a childish liar.

And for for "rocks!!!"; it does not. It's just a number machine, don't ask them things like "wife tom cruise" because he will reply with that he has no clue what you're meaning, with Google you have the answer on the first site it finds. Wolfram Alpha is rubbish for the average John and Jill.

  • You know what? 2 days ago 16th May 2009, wolframAlpha went LIVE as non-launch. AND U KNOW WHAT? thousands of people visited and had access to it. So i really wonder which poor cave you just climbed out from! want prove? go justin tv and search for wolframalpha HAHAahaHah what a LOSER you got OWNED! FEEL sad for you living a sad life, google is SHIT and it can't tell "the difference between sun and moon"! Try that with google and click 1st link and u will be shock that GOOGLE Suuckkkks!! A**HOLE

  • Google maybe not, but Wikipedia is fucked up with this xD

  • i think only specific people like scientist or college students will really use this as much as normal people use google.

  • i am looking fwd to it nevertheless

  • well, it might just make us dumber...first we didnt need to look for info, now we dont need to process it.

  • cool ;)

  • Google is not for me anymore =D.

    Wolfram Alpha =D.

  • i hope this thing can do my calculus HW

  • Probably can, but wheres the fun in that? :P

  • haha calculus is so hard and boring! i hate it. lols. this is going to be fun. But my teachers will probably catch on

  • which languages will it support? please reply

  • How can we know that the facts is true or false???

  • thats where your own processing steps come in to double check wolfram's result.

  • The problem is: this searchengine has a very personal opinion!

This is a absolutely perfect propaganda-machine as we live in times of nearly absolute surveillance and control.

The banking/financial system is modern slavery! We are being robbed literally, and soon we will live in open fascism under satanic dictators, who are trying to depopulate mankind to 500 Mio and bring up the Antichrist.

Please beware of this NEW thing brainwashing you with plain lies!

  • you're right, it's going to tell you how to live, who to vote for and what to do... just like Google does !

  • yes, one shouldnt be naive about this thing, we are being currently deceived at all levels of our life!

Debt-Money slavery, only interest for the riches, politician-puppets (see eg bilderberger), gm-food, codex alimentarius, staged 9/11s, chemtrails, HAARP-Weapon, policestate, EU, NAU , soon coming the fascistic "New World Order", project bluebeam (new staged messiah) etc.

Its literally the devils work - The endtimes, the last 7 years are here right now in front of us!

  • i forgot to mention the Massmedia ...how could i?

  • Comment removed

  • You forgot to include Mcdonalds, they're all over the world now, and with a flick of a button, the chairman of mcdonalds could launch a simultaneous revolution inside out in all the countries in the world.

  • Shhhh, people arent ready for all that yet. Just let them carryon on with their daily lifes.

  • Who pics the information? I guess less known or unpopular info would be left out?!

  • My life is sure a big play ground for all u..I am a one man army .I stand by myself never needing no back up for anything ..i fear no one but the man ..i am that man..

  • May 18 is the official release date

  • I cannot wait to play with this!!!!

  • this is just skynet all over again

  • WolframAlpha will be used to demonize the internet and impliment communist style control and regulation on its use. I can see them requireing internet 2 and special permisson to use this tool. They will demonize it by saying terroists could use it to discover how to make bombs. Either that or they will start a complex censorship control over it, for example if you try to access it from china most information about the rest of the world will not be available. But that will just be the start.

  • Who is "they"?

  • You know...... THEM. The PTB....

  • Google would just counter this, with its own version.

  • "Google would just counter this, with its own version."

Google doesn't have the computation framework of Mathematica with thousands of scientific models to represent all the data. Almost anyone working in science has used Mathematica at some point.

The other big technology required by google would be natural language query processor that it currently lacks. That's not something you develop in 6 months

  • Surely it would just copy those same scientific models and put it in its own version. Or can Mathematica actually copyright its computations??

I really cant see google having much problem copying this. I bet they already have similar stuff in their labs.

  • looking forwards to this :)

  • May 18 is the official release date

  • This kind of technology can revolutionise not only search engine but I see potential in the world of Business Intelligence also.

  • Comment removed

  • 2 * 2 = 5 ?

  • Now I can use it to find all the red light districts within 25 miles of my city.

  • This is amazing. I can't wait.

  • LOL. On the first day, I will ask it: P = NP? XD

  • purpose isn't same you know.

  • It is NOT a search engine in the way google is.

  • Now I can sleep in and outsource my life to this sucker. Sweet.

  • This is really cool. I can't wait for it to go live.

  • How is it "gendrocentric"?

  • Don't worry, I'm sure you can still use it to find great deals on shoes or cake pans or whatever it is that you ladies like to talk about. ;-p

  • 18May

  • Does anyone know the exact day it will be released this month?

  • Yes, May 18th. 9 more days...

  • thanks that helped a lot!

  • we`ll just have to wait to see what this program really can do, but far i could see seems promising, not a competition for google, but something diferent alpha: home work. google: porn

  • awsome, can't wait to use it!

  • it sucks i went on it today its so complicated

  • its not even launched yet ... stop with the bullshit ...

  • this is not new. google this "The START Natural Language Question Answering System" click on the one that has Mit in it.

  • @rimpick

Tried [gdp of france / italy] on START?

It's not able to do that, Alpha can.

  • i know but that system was created in 1993!

  • Like someone else mentioned here, search engine will offer its own "personal" opinion based on opinions of its developers and pretend it is factual, computed and non-biased. This could be potentially very scary! Imagine someone not only recording but also breaking out interactions on net into new equations thus predicting our thoughts, opinions, fears, etc. Thought Police anyone?

  • This reminds me of USS Enterprise's main computer from Star Trek. Looks very promising!

  • Looks quite nice imho. Totally different users will use this than Google, i belive it will be a succes for college students.

  • it would work perfectly as another tool for google.

    is this monopoly?

  • GOOGLE WILL BUY THIS SHIT

  • Google will not buy it, because he doesn't sell anything

...and Google is not evil ;o)

  • Google is a company. Companies want to earn money. If a company sees a oppertunity to do so, they do it.

  • I don't think that this is competition for google... it just has different uses.

  • You are somehow right with this opinion...but we still have google to compare results...

  • DUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude!

  • anything smarter than the google piece of shit. Google is the worlds #1 porn distributor. About time we get passed the (as dumb as Al Gore) Google search engine.

  • Yes! Great. This should have been done 12 years ago, what Google should have been doing from the get-go.

    My humble opinion.

  • well in google news we can see topics as "google and apple are being close watched for monopoly issues"

and also "WolframAlpha understands what we looking for" lol

  • LoL guys. This is NOT a replacement for google or wikipedia. This is an expand, or rather a new feature on the web that we didn't know we needed. Like we didn't know we needed wiki, google,... before they appeared. Assuming it works like presented of course.

  • When Google dies, Youtubes dies! Yay

  • If I ask this thing what the answer to life, the universe, and everything is, will it tell me 42?

  • Definitely ...

    Even Google can do it...

  • Flanger777 is a typical christian with the mind of a child who still believes in santa claus

  • I think this will be amazing - the problem with ALL the modern search engines is that they don't necessarily give you the sites you want - rather they give you sites which have been contrived to appear in the results irrespective of how pertinent the results actually are - hence the fact that you end up going to directory listings rather than the actual content you sought...

  • Are the curators experts in their fields? Is the primary data expressions open to truth or available to controlling interests?

Should be stewards not just curators for information.

  • the visual representation is definitely a plus to apprehend searched topic vs linear Google results but people like Google... Well we'll see in action soon

  • I wouldn't take anything at face value, especially if lives, belief systems and essential knowledge is concerned. Would always do at least 3 separate checks from 3 mutually exclusives sources, as good as this all looks.

  • I wonder if it can answer questions that is situational, such as : "what is the general reaction of a cat when you put it in a bath?", or about obscure facts : "what is the name of the first porn movie that had chicks with dicks in it?"

  • would be interested too :DD

  • totally unimpressed.

  • THIS WILL HAVE CONTROLLED BIAS ANSWERS..

BIASED RESULTS TO CONTROL US, SUCH AS WHO CONTROLS THE MEDIA, ETC...

google has a more TRANSPARENT results

  • isn't google censored in China? can't see anything there for "tianamen square." its not wolfram alpha that will have "CONTROLLED BIAS ANSWERS" its who's in charge overall. show some proof.

  • Interesting. How transparent is it? Will it be possible to see where it gets its data from? Otherwise it wont really be useful for, say, academic purposes.

  • oh and yeah...my bad stickyanus. i see what you're saying. it'd have to show the sources from the data, true.

  • no problem mate, my concern about technology is that it always seems to be getting more and more controlled, and less free. Google has freeier Data, .... Whilst we dont know whole will be Curating the data at Wolfram.

Becuase they say that they'll be hiring 1000 people to curate it, in other words control and add the data.

  • very true. don't trust everything you see/read. i'm not sure why people downrated this. i upped it.

  • Good point I also wonder if they will to that.

  • and it is an obvious misunderstanding that this is presented as an alternative to google search.

  • comparing this to google search is just not right, although google had something similar to this, it had no decent and rich graphical interface and its database was very simple and it only had VERY limited set of information which was far from being useful.

  • Meh, if it's any good, Google will just buy them out. Probably what they're hoping for anyhow.

  • 'I guess they have other sources' , haha

    that was a good one.

  • fucking hell, ever heard of wikipedia and a 'find on this page' tool? or i this just for really lazy people lol xD

  • wolfram needs a ubiquity app

  • That's epic! I mean somebody could develop in the very near future computer programs that use voice recognition to construct phrases and questions from the users and then show in a fraction of a second all the things they can about the question the user has asked and even read them loud to the user, ask him if he wants to see the graphics for whatever and so on! THAT IS EPIC, but I hope it won't beat Wikipedia...

  • "but I hope it won't beat Wikipedia... "

What kind of dumb thing to say is that? If it beats Wikipedia, it would only mean that people like it better than Wikipedia and there must be a GOOD reason why they like it better.

  • haha yeah, unless this guy owns half the stocks in wiki

  • Yeah, obviously hehe

  • Only an ass would type, 'What is the GDP of France' into a searchbox.

I'd just type 'GDP' and 'France' and be done with it.

  • wow. no shit.

  • As soon as it's available, I'm going to ask it "What is the GDP of France divided by Italy times the color blue?"

  • 577.1 nm (nanometers)

  • answer to the question, "What is the GDP of France divided by Italy times the color blue?"

  • Yeah well I dont give a shit about the GDP of anywhere I might want some specific porn though

Hyped up pile of shite this !!

  • Maybe this will knock Google off it's high horse and force them to put out a product that's worth a shit.

  • It'll be not shit. Just crawls the web like google does.

  • ok, in the hands of an evil person, this would b dangerous

  • I wrote some software that does more or less the same as this last month.

  • lol, me too :D

  • seriously, the name alone is suicidal. why that name?

  • Where can I find hot easy girls?

  • Based on the current orientation of all the stars in the galaxy, how many years will planet Earth last?

  • How much do cannabis brokers earn?

Or how many marijuana plants required to provided all medical patients with chronic pain?

Cannot wait for this SE to come out? BTW - if it is a SE, what is its stance on adult (xxx) content?

Just to clear up one thing, are the results all data answers or peoples websites as results like Google on a certain topics?

  • Wolfram|Alpha, please define what "sexy" is?

  • In what way is it comparable to Google? It has a textbox as well?

  • He's amazing. You should take a look at his Mathmatica Software package! If I only had 2400!

  • Comment removed

  • Why didnt they just say it is a live-search-aggregate version of Wikipedia ?

  • Comment removed

  • Beacouse it isn't.

  • It's not competition for google. From what I've seen it looks like a statistical number cruncher. Looks like a lot of high level maths with real data already entered into it for you.

Will have to wait and see what exactly it can and can't do. I don't think it searches web-pages though.

  • A conversation with WolframAlpha version 3.Make me an electronic nose, make it sensitive to 10 meters, make into a keyring and sound an alarm if it detects any illegal substances.send an email to all border police offices and send me a prototype. Can you also patent it to me.Keep me informed of who wants to buy my product and set me a website to sell and market it.

  • Wolfram looks awesome. I only wish the scientists behind it would try to present it just a little better. If they are trying to compete with google, they need to seriously up their game.

  • IBM announced Watson, a natural language answer engine. What would be interesting is the combination of Google, WlframAlpha and Watson and wikipedia.Their integration would enable the user to research and compute most answers. If you add to that Dragon naturally speaking ( voice recognition system), you could do all your research with voice.Startreck era has hit us , integration is the key.

  • Wikipedia would be the weak link there, as it introduces human bias.

  • With each update I get from the Wolfman team the more i am ready to dump google, who knows with luck they will pull out of Y/Tube to concentrate on trying to play catch up with wolfman, and we get back to user driven content on Y/T.

Excellent presentation of a long awaited alternative to google.

  • Okay. I just saw the future. One day you'll say "What was Google?" to Wolfram Engine...and it'll tell you what Google used to be.

    Damn. 5 stars...

  • I just jizzed in my pants watching this. I will ask Wolfram Alpha what to do about it.

  • I am Wolfram Alpha.

    You should lick 'em clean.

  • Google will catch up anyway, nothing against wolfram..they do make good software.

  • I can't wait for this to go live, it will be so much fun to play with.
