@STlNKUPUS I said Grunge was influenced by hardcore punk and heavy metal with some indie, alt influences. I'm not a hipster by the way, how the hell did you get that idea?
Nice to hear this one and others again. I haven't listened to Soundgarden much since this record was stolen from me in 1990. I bought ultramega when it came out and drove my buddies/girlfriends crazy with it! Still have an early ep that was a gift on a trip to Bremerton for the Lollapallooza, very good too. After Soundgarden Ministry came on, blew my eardrums and gave me a bad headache. I couldn't make it through the Chilis set. The later stuff I've heard is not as good, not as rough or heavy.
Call it what you want I call it awesome, when the 2 bitches down in the bottom arguing about what genre of music this is actually called, me and my 49 buddies will be in the next evolutionary plane of existence waiting for the Ascension button to have 51 hits (just like the like button)
Actually its not the ONLY time because the song HALF off of SUPERUNKNOWN had lead vocqals by Ben Shepperd who ironicly was the full time replacement of Hiro Yamamoto
@thedude652 True that just a fashion based on guys with burly beards and cold weather, it was just a mosh posh of different styles that inspired each artist, some bands more metal and some bands more punk and some bands more awesome(Soundgarden)
I should re-phrase, the instrumentals are great! It's just the vocals I can't stand, i guess it's one of those "love 'em or hate 'em" situations. Not many people, even to today can touch Chris Cornell's voice. Audioslave proves he's still got it!
these vocals are great. japanese dude soundin like a methed out hick. he even says "it's not good, just beautiful" i think it's chris. savin his ass. hehehe
the music is awesome and Hiro's vocals are just horrible, but i like it either way. but why would they let him sing? i can't understand the lyrics!! still good though. i read somewhere that Chris would have Hiro sing the vocals whenever they performed "Flower" live.
Grunge is a load of bullshit. It's a marketing term used to define the sound from the Seattle region. If you disagree, I'd like you to explain how Soundgarden, Nirvana and Mother Love Bone sound similar.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
mother love bone were not grunge, And both Soundgarden and Nirvana has dirty guitar riffs and schratchy voices...it is hard to explain..., the pedal steel is used alot, and there is often sentences that dont rime and each line (not during the whole song) has a new melody...
@FemBot667 obviously it's a marketing term, that has never been debated. Have you found one band grunge band that actually calls itself grunge??? There are none, as they hate the label and knew it was poor journalism-as-profiteering crap. But your assessment is lame, all three bands sound completely different. MLB was way more akin to 80's mainstream hard rock with Jane's Addiction and Led Zep-ish stuff, Nirvana borrows from the Melvins and Sonic Youth, Soundgarden is sludgy psychedelic metal
@TheGreaterGood80 Nirvana is barely comparable to Sonic Youth, so I think you should check your facts. Nirvana has definitely borrowed more from punk, Pearl Jam from classic rock especially The Who, Alice in Chains has a metal edge, and Soundgarden is just very distinct.
@Sh1ftyLizard Sonic Youth is a far better band, and was considered very punk for their time. Nirvana still borrowed from them. The guy who got Kurt into punk in the first place was Buzz from the Melvins, so there you go
and how about the vocalists? Chris Cornell King Buzzo Kurt Cobain Mark Lanegan Mark Arm Layne Staley Eddie Vedder Andrew Wood Tad Doyle that's quite a list of badasses
Soundgarden Melvins Nirvana Screaming Trees Mudhoney Alice In Chains Pearl Jam Mother Love Bone Green River Tad Fastbacks Skin Yard Seven Year Bitch Afghan Whigs doesn't count GrungeRock1991
why must you people constantly compare bands? I always see people doing that. i couldnt watch any videos of Metallica or Megadeth with some fanboy always irritating me!!!! AAARRRRRGGGGHHH!!!!! I like cheese.
i was always on team megadeth cos they were alot more inovative with their guitars, and metallica sold out, haha only joking man, but thats what this is for isnt it? especially for metal critics. megadeth forever!!!!!!!!!!!! relax
Yeah, you know what is so fuckin sad? People just keep on comparing bands that don't have anything in common. Peolple still think that grunge is a genre of music, but it is not. It is more a fashion statement. Nirvana has nothing in common with pearl jam, or alice in chains has nothing in common with nirvana, and etc..
ur all so far up ur asses it kills me! nirvana is one of the most over rated bands of all time, they had a boring sound and very little talent, they were just a good teen angst band
soundgarden is one of the most under rated bands of all time! they had more than talent and skill, the things these guys could do wit their music is astounding and amazing in every way shape n form!
there is no other band in the world wit a sound like theirs or as much talent!!! GET IT RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song is hilarious and stupid, which is the point. I get the impression Soundgarden was just trying to screw around with Ultramega OK.
For the record, contrary to the author comments, there is another Soundgarden song featuring lyrics that are not preformed by Cornell. "Half" from the album Superunknown is sung by bassist Ben Shepard.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I cant understand people these days, i like very few soundgarden songs, mainly because the band revolves around cornell and his vocals which i think arn't that great, espcially that piece of shit james bond song he done, i mean what the fuck! This song shows some character unlike nearly every other soungarden song. I cant belive you think its bad?
And no one else here can believe you think Soundgarden is bad. Go give Badmotorfinger a listen in its entirety, and if you still think Soundgarden isn't great, then I suggest you just give up on music entirely. It obviously aint for you if that's the case.
I love Badmotorfinger.... Superunknown is just generic crap-rock that just shat over the music and became obsessed with cornells vocals that aren't even that great.
And plus they are over rated...
And you're telling me to give up on music? I mean look at you're name "GrungeRock1991" Surely you know that grunge if anything was a term used to milk the seattle sound that was around at that stage and was there to make money, which is what the good bands thought which lead to the death of Cobain..
I vever thought I'd see the day where I found a stupid Slint fan, but I guess I was wrong. "Grunge" was a term coined by Mark Arm of Mudhoney used to describe the sound of Seattle music at the time when it was becoming popular. NIRVANA was the overrated band of the bunch, and the mainstream went to Seattle, not vice versa. And maybe you should learn to read. I said if you listen to Badmotorfinger and still hate Soundgarden you should give up. And you have, so I guess maybe you should.
Well he described mudhoney in a magazine as filthy and grungey.. No way where Nirvana Over-rated, i mean all the bands i love diserve to be that popular, i'm saying that soundgarden where still over rated.. I mean no way would they have been as popular if cornell wasn't on vocals. And Grunge was then raped, used so big name clothing brands can mlk the "Grunge Look" and sell flannel shirts for $120 and haggard jeans for $200, have tourist commercials for seattle with the word Grunge flashing up..
And for those reasons the bands at the time where denying the term and still do - Especially the Melvins who i would say most definitly the Godfathers of the sound - distanced themselves from it as quick as. And just because you like an album of someones doesn't mean you have to like the rest? Actually infact thats dumb, because if they're good every album is different, so i think i can say it justly considering i have listened to all of soundgardens..
And also, any Slint fan that knows good music would recognise Superunknown as generic boring self obsessed shit. And this song is definitly the best song they ever did, it's great, infact it's of the best songs i've ever heard but that doen't mean the rest of their stuff is good. As i have said, most sucks balls.
I know what the history of grunge is and why bands tried to escape it but I appreciate the insight anyway. Nowhere did I ever say you can't only like one album, because, as I know, you can. But to say Soundgarden was over rated when you have Kurt Cobain over here blowing his brains out and SKYROCKETING their sales because of it, is absolutely fucking ridiculous. A statement like yours makes me realize you can't point out good music very well. You obviously know nothing of great music.
What i'm saying is that Nirvana where 10 times the band soungarden where... I'm not one of the ultra-fans that obsess about Cobain and forget about everything, if anything he's just a bit of a dick, but great band, no where near my favourite though. I would like to think i know the upmost of good music..
Well being a fan of Slint you do know some great music, so I take that part back. Can't go wrong with Nirvana either. Hell I love Nirvana, even though I do still think they got a little more credit for the whole grunge thing when some of that credit should've gone to other bands as well. But they were 10 times the band Soundgarden were? Come now.
Even if they could write music like Soundgarden did there's no way in hell they could play it on their instruments.
Well it's a matter of opinion of course between the 2 i just prefer Nirvana. But yeah definitly alot of other bands should have got more credit, i would say Melvins and Mudhoney especially.
I agree this is a pretty bad song, but even a weak song by Soundgarden is a lot more entertaining them most other band's all time bests. It's memorable.
great song! I love it! haha, cornell rules, soundgarden was awesome and bold but cool enough not to be egotistical; hence songs like this with crazy whacked out vocals showing they dont give a fuck... but still making the song sick
