This is an AMAZING guitar solo, Hackett has my "favorite" stamp, but this is just through the roof! I saw DS do this thirty years ago, he's only gotten better. So few could ever step up and say he is a guitarist for Genesis. I am sure he has Steve's admiration and respect cause ANY musician could respect this performance.
First of all, Tony Banks wrote the melody. He plays it in the piano break, and Hackett takes it from there in the guitar solo. It's nothing but the same licks repeated over and over again. He did an awesome job of course. Secondly, this one is an AMAZING solo. Daryl is the man. Much better than playing the same old melody after all these years. Things need to be renewed from time to time.
This isn't a bad solo by any means, but it doesn't come close to having the feel that Hackett puts into his. Granted Hackett wrote it, but still.. I won't complain about a nod to the old days though. Glad they're attempting to keep their creative era alive.
Genesis after Hackett left was never as creative a band as they were with him. Im not even sure how much Daryl Stuermer contributed in the studio after Hackett left. He was their for their tours and he is a good live player but yes, it was Hackett who was the musical gem of that band! Their songs got simple and more pop orientated and sold more but they were never as great without Steve Hackett!
YES it does matter who the better guitar player is......Stuermer would NOT be playing it if HACKETT did not write it...........So it makes a huge difference. I am not saying that Stuermer is not a great player which he is. I am saying that it was NOT his talent that created most of the songs that he plays with Genesis, at least the old ones. Steve Hackett is a very under rated guitar player. He came up with a lot of techniques that he never received credit for in the main stream...
Steve Hackett created different ways to coax new sounds out of the electric guitar. Then DS had to remain true to the original while contributing his own skill. FOR 30 YEARS. Give him credit for that, he only wants to play Genesis music, not create it.
It doesn't really matter who the better guitarist is, Stuermer or Hackett. What's important is that this is a superb guitar solo from an extremely gifted musician.
Respond to this video... The important thing about Genesis? Whether it is the drums, the bass, the lead guitar or even the flute, every single person can make that instrument talk to you. I mean TALK. Maybe Phil's drums are the best example, but everybody else, whether a member of the band or just for tours, does exactly the same thing.
@beinndorainjames Actually the most important thing for me is the person who wrote the original solo. That is all that matters, anyone can play another man's solo. Writing one of this caliber takes another mind all together.
no way is daryl better than hackett! what are you on? daryl wanks basic scales, while hackett creates beautiful atmospheres and melodies. not to mention that steve is an amazing classical player. hackett is one of the most influential guitarists of his period, and the second best in prog rock ever.
@corum428 This is the Genesis that we like as a majority. Hackett was great for sure, but this is different, and still an as great Genesis sound. And Stuermer is fantastic, he did the same solo in the Old Medley in the Way We Walk concert, and it was even smoother and better, in my opinion, got me more feelings than the Hackett era
@patallah Steve Hackett is just in another level, you can't compare him to this guy. His solo in the album version of FoF is a masterpiece, this is just a great solo. Genesis ended when he left, Without Peter Gabriel and without him, they lost complete track of their work. Are you seriously comparing Selling England By The Pound with Invisible Touch?! Daryl Stuermer isn't even a member of Genesis!
not bad Daryl...not bad at all.....for once he has a great Hackett sound coming through that Fender. Thank god for Italians and their love of Genesis. ....What a crowd and show.
Does anyone like the studio version intro better? I do! this is genius but i`m hoping that they can play like the studio version in the intro som other time :)
i prefer the steve hackets solo, tis is notr bad but, it seems that has to do more with speed, the onther one, is the kind of solo that you can almost feel entering in your body, and laying like an insect
This tour is a valuable one ,because Phil has retired ,because of medical peoblems and hearing problems ,he cant play drums anymore so this 2007 reunion will most likely be Genesis,s last appearance on stage together
The problem with Gabriel and Collins is that it has become all about ego. Conversely Hackett, who I know personally, is understated and an inextricable part of the original band. But that's life. Genesis were greater than the sum of their parts. Hackett on his own is a tad dour, Collins has a good voice and is a good on drums but he's a jerk and Gabriel is a toff with an attitude. The tout ensemble was magnificent however.
I feel very sad listening to pieces like Firth of Fifth played in this way... this guys (?) should have the good taste to not play old pieces like that, at least in this awful way; Collins is (or was ?) an excellent drummer and he would have had to confine himself to do it and nothing else, even after Peter's resignation too... mayor responsabilities of the Genesis (artistical) fall must be ascribed almost solely if not completely to him... [to be continued]
The most amazing thing about it for me is the fact that Phil Collins and Chester Thompson are playing EXACTLY the same, that means there is no improvisation on the drum piece, it's all composed.
(follow in English)
hmmm i was enjoying that looking forward to the solo then at 1:50 the solo went tits up the guy is a good guitarist for a stand in but who the fuck gave him permission to add-lib through probably the best genesis guitar solo ever the fans wont to hear genesis not you daryl stuermer!!!!!
'NCOMPETENTI !!! MA COMUNQUE W I GENESIS (ALMENO FINO AL 1975!).
Yep DS nails it. But he didnt create it. Comparing and excellent performer with a creative one is like saying "this cherry is so much better than that strawberry" they are both wonderfully sweet, but different.
If you go listen to the original studio cut, its superior, not as embellished but it it is the raw creative urge that made this performance possible.
I`m proud to say I witnessed Genesis play on this world tour at Old Trafford, England. Had to Pay £130 for my ticket. Would of been a bargain at twice the price.
The best of ROME 2007... full of feeling, exellent technique, best performance for daryl in guitar.... and phil collins just laughing and enjoying this AMAZING song... chicken skin at 2:50.... I LOVE GENESIS
This is always Darryl's big moment since they don't play the knife or Musical box that much anymore. I do agree he doesn't have the entire feel for the solo. You notice it more watching hearing Hackett play it with his band.
I've enjoyed genesis immensly over the years and the original version of the guitar solo on this wonderful peice was sublime and it sort of grew organically out of the keyboard solo. skilled though he may be daryl sturmer wrecks this version. I might like it if i didn't know how good the original was.
In my opinion, Genesis kind of started to sell out around 1980 and after. Can you really compare Seconds Out to Invisible Touch? Sure they gained several million more fans, but they alienated many of those fans who had been with them since From Genesis to Revelation. It makes me sad to see that they only do excerpts of their best songs now, especially Suppers Ready or Cinema Show. And, no offense to Daryl Stuermer or Anthony Phillips, but Steve Hackett was the best guitarist for them.
I'd like for those critiscists lo show me a new band who can perform half as good as this. Genesis creation can't just be touched and Phil's a living legend, just go critizise Led Zeppelin´s tired old fakes...
I would liked to have seen how Francis Dunnery would have interpreted this with the Bhoys behind him. Oh well. Hackett is brilliant. Daryl just regurds it. But Francis has the 'jen ne se quoi' (sp?) sensibility (not to be confused with ability, as they all have it) to raise the bar on this and many other Genesis tracks. I wish they could have worked it out.
@johnnythelowery I thought this guy was pretty amazing and yet not identical. The WORST thing you could do would be to cram a bunch of extra notes in there.
@ajdicks: Dunnery is a unique talent and Daryl....he's good, but, the word Journeyman comes to my mind. Not his fault-he has to play in Hackett's spirit. I believe they looked really closely at Francis. Very closely indeed. Dunnery would have 'replaced' Hackett instead of filling for him.
People get wrapped up in what a guitar 'can' do when what really matters is what they choose to do. Technique is secondary to creativity. Hackett's style was essential to Genesis. Just see how they changed when he left. They lost the haunting quality in their songs. You can hear it in Hackett's solo albums. Struemner is great, but in the end he's a studio mercenary. He had nothing to do with the creation and formation of the bands sound and wrote none of these unforgettable passages.
"Needledick"! Love it. Yeah, Phil can't play as fast as he used to. He still has incredible groove, though. And this is a great performance of the Firth Of Fifth instrumental section.
Was there any need for that comment? They were hardly going to play the entirety of Firth of Fifth, it was a nod to another medley they did on the '92 tour. I suppose you were expecting them to do the whole of Behind The Lines or do the whole of Cinema Show, needledick? My point was that Phil Collins can't play like that or sing in those keys any more, but I guess your musical wisdom didn't catch that one.......What are all the dots for? Tumbleweed? Prick
Ah I get it, you're a purile Peter Gabriel era fan. I like that era too, but I went to see the era I grew up listening to, post Duke. So yes, please have your opinion and if you don't like mine then don't read it. Simples Pcccth!
Didn't they mess up some of the chords in the beginning though and what you hear on the DVD is dubbed over from another concert.. I guess even they aren't perfect. Manchester was though - so thanks again guys for a fantastic night!
Oh, I LOVE when Phil smiles like that! They had such a blast. Wish they'd come closer to me, I'm scared this is the last tour and I've wanted to see them live for 20 plus years.
@lifeseeker82 It's such and amazing song... every time i hear it i wonder how somebody could imagine something like this... the harmony of the keyboards... the drums... the guitar solo, and of course, the bass line: basic, but perfect.
This is an AMAZING guitar solo, Hackett has my "favorite" stamp, but this is just through the roof! I saw DS do this thirty years ago, he's only gotten better. So few could ever step up and say he is a guitarist for Genesis. I am sure he has Steve's admiration and respect cause ANY musician could respect this performance.

compare this solo to ANY of the ones Hackett is playing even these days.
1:58 to 2:10 is horrible, it just doesn't BELONG to this song.
from 2:30 it lacks the drama Hacket invented. it's just the same sequence of notes without passion and drama.
I am sorry but this solo ruined this performance.

I cringe when I hear Daryl butcher this fine solo.
hoffmanbikes777 1 year ago
@hoffmanbikes777
I wouldn't say he butchered it, but those momentary pauses he puts in there beat you over the head if you know how the song was originally played.
rafalweb 1 year ago
I've enjoyed genesis immensly over the years and the original version of the guitar solo on this wonderful peice was sublime and it sort of grew organically out of the keyboard solo. skilled though he may be daryl sturmer wrecks this version. I might like it if i didn't know how good the original was.

Mister Steve Hackett simply the best of Genesis member ,and more simply the best of word music
antoniopinamarques 1 year ago
Amazing version - they rarely played Firth Of Fifth live in the old days. Daryl Stuermer at his finest.

And, no offense to Daryl Stuermer or Anthony Phillips, but Steve Hackett was the best guitarist for them.
rozeem6 1 year ago 2
@rozeem6
agreed....i'd even go as far to say that Genesis kinda started to sell out when Gabriel left...but really sold out when Hackett left
deadhardy 1 year ago
@rozeem6 Well, Daryl is better than Phillips. And he is a very good emulator of Hackett, especially in this piece and in Ripples (2007).

I'd like for those critiscists lo show me a new band who can perform half as good as this. Genesis creation can't just be touched and Phil's a living legend, just go critizise Led Zeppelin´s tired old fakes...

@alcalaed: Okay son. Put this in your Youtube search:
Refugee - Grand Canyon Suite: The Rapids
From the 70's.

@alcalaed: And from the 80's check out this solo:
It Bites - Screaming On The Beaches (Live) Town & Country Club
What's good about them is they are.....different. Better/worse?..depends what mood i'm in. I think there is some good stuff out there though.
johnnythelowery 1 year ago
@alcalaed: And then lastly: a very interesting keyboard band:
Greenslade - The ass's ears (1975 live)

Good to see Phil laughing after the slight cock up. Probably a sigh of relief.

I wish they could have worked it out.
johnnythelowery 2 years ago
@johnnythelowery I thought this guy was pretty amazing and yet not identical. The WORST thing you could do would be to cram a bunch of extra notes in there.
ajdicks 1 year ago
@ajdicks: Dunnery is a unique talent and Daryl....he's good, but, the word Journeyman comes to my mind. Not his fault-he has to play in Hackett's spirit. I believe they looked really closely at Francis. Very closely indeed. Dunnery would have 'replaced' Hackett instead of filling for him.
johnnythelowery 1 year ago
@johnnythelowery THat is.......they looked closed at Francis replacing Phil's shoes
(he was once a drummer).

I Hate When People Compare Hackett To Struemer I Mean There Both Really Good!
GenesisAllSidesLive 2 years ago 4

Yeah, they really ruined the performance because of that...
What a jackass... And also, half the song is missing but I guess your musical wisdom didn't catch that one...
MrGorbokan 2 years ago
