This is my next door neighbour check it 913 olsen avenue signal mountain tenneessee she lives with my best friend the "Witts". Shes really cool nothin like she used to be.
The song "You're My World," which helped Susan win the 1986 Miss America crown, was originally recorded by Cilla Black (1964) and covered by Helen Reddy (1977).
I think the problem is variations in the playback of the VHS tape. I watched this performance live and remember that she kicked this song's ass! It's hard to see (or hear) from this. At least someone has a copy of it. Thanks for posting!
@Stevis82 It is an okay performance by her. On Miss America website, there is a chat room called Community Hall for fans of the pageant, and when someone one asked everyone to recall their favorites for talent, a pageant historian gave some examples, and then chimed in that the talent this year was among the worst ever, and it was largely agreed that Ms Akin did not have any stand out talent, and it was agreed by the majority hat this was perhaps the worst ever talent by a winner...
I was at Miss America in 1986 and it was known from the get go she would win!!! She was pretty enough and was a outstanding speaker but her talent was one of the worst of the top ten finalist--She just had a era about her like "Let's get this over with --Give me the crown I want to go home"--i can understand her winning swimsuit she had a body to die for but to winn Talent -What were those judges thinking!!!-Word was she blew every other contestant away in the interviews!!!
@1ddote She might have had a "body to die for", but, her VERY low body weight of around 108 lbs got a lot of press and criticism from those opposed to the pressures of pageants for contestants to be as thin as possible, as opposed to as fit as possible. I think the measurements, including weight stopped being taken and published back in the late 80's, all except for height. When I looked over the list, she was the lightest by far; even lighter than the shortest Ms America ever, Kylene Barker.
@Parker528 Well don't worry now... she has no problem with being too thin! She's about 315 lbs now. Not attractive. I didn't even believe her when she told me who she was. She's a slob, dead broke, and huge. Really sad considering what she couldve done with her life.
@lafawndagould I think I DID hear something like this before, or read it in the Community Hall chat room on the Miss America website. I thought too that I read she was in a bad car accident, that left her disfigured. Was that a true statement, or just a rumor? Just curious. Either way, I feel for her, and it's a shame.
@1ddote Wait, just reread this; do you mean to say she won a prelim talent award for this? Or are you saying that of the final group of 10, she won most points for talent? Either way, it seems unreal. Only a few truly talented girls won both prelims and then won the title, one being Dorothy Benham. But, as in the '96 pageant, two girls each won both prelims, both making top 10, but only one making top 5, and got 3rd runner up; indicating just how important that interview is for this pageant.
no no, it's the old video. It warps the sound a little I think. I'm hearing this in a lot of VCR recordings posted to youtube. The background melody sounds weird.
In days of old, the pageant would name the top 10 semifinalists, have them compete in all aspects of the pageant, that is, talent, swimsuit, and evening gown, then select the top five, ask them a question, and then rank them, from fourth runner-up to Miss America. Someone should have left well enough alone, changing times notwithstanding.
I love her as well, but I was a little shocked that she and Cheryl Prewitt was not at the Miss Mississippi 50th anniversay this year. Mary ann Mobley and Lina Lee Mead where there!!!
Upload Miss America 1986 Miss Mississippi Susan Akin in the 10 semifinalist Swimsuit Competition.

Singing style and phrasing very similar to Debbie Maffet - good coaching and making the most out of a song! Very pretty lady!
