Discount cards are also something backed only by faith in the reputation of a company and they are used as money right now. The problem with fiat currency is that by definition it has no underlying value. Any exchange medium (like gold/silver) that has real value is really a form of barter. Both parties to a transaction walk away with real value. Fiat currency though means one party is walking away with only a piece of paper. No one should be able to issue fiat currency; it's fraud.
