  • @ 0:45 -1:00 the lady is doing her own version of moonwalk

  • Incredibly annoying video title.

  • Hmm this is a pretty groovy version!

  • This was the Song that Started the PSYCHEDELIC Movement. . AUSTIN PSYCH FEST 2011

    LISTEN TO THE BLACK ANGELS

  • That ain't country. Kenny has always had a soulful sound to me - now I see why. Great post.

  • Playing bass and singing the lead at the same time is a bitch in the first place. Most people can't hack it. Depending on the bass notes it can be like playing a lead guitar riff over your own vocals.

  • Damn, Kenny got pitchy when the key changed. Either that or the old tape was dragging.

  • i knew there was a reason i never liked his music

  • Top notch I have some new found respect for Kenny had this on my iPod for ages and didn't know it was him class

  • What a great clip!!! This must have been from around 1968-69?? This is a rare gem to see. Not like the original studio recording but good nonetheless.

  • Kenny should have let the background singers handle the higher notes. Other than that, superb live performance.

  • This is a treasure!

  • Ragged man... Long live the Big Roge!

  • Good God. NOBODY writes, let alone performs live this caliber of song anymore. Anyone calling themselves a musician should aspire to at least this level of creativity and on-the-spot musicianship. I guarantee there aren't more than a handful who even come close. God Bless you Kenny, Mickey, Terry, Mike and Thelma!

  • one of the best tunes ever!!! go-kenny-go!!!

  • kenny rogers looks like the "Dude" ;)

  • Very cool... I played that same stage a few times beginning in 1987... Still haven't sold as many albums as Kenny tho... or ANY for that matter...lol

  • Never knew Kenny played bass, or any instrument for that matter...

  • Solid gold!

  • heard it on the radio when it first came out and immediatly dropped acid

  • There were probably two hits in "The First Edition's 2nd" --"Charlie the Fer De Lance" and "A Patch of Clear." Their harmonies on "Patch" sounded just a little too much like the Cowsills, but the lyrics on "Rainbows on a Cloudy Day" ("Love is much more than a word/It's a beautiful state of mind") and "If I Could Only Change Your Mind" ("Why can't you find what you're needing in me") were completely mature. Maybe the album just wasn't conventional enough for the taste of the period.

  • You said it.. THE LONG WAY!

    STANDS UP NOW TILL NEVER.

  • Well, that's like, just your opinion, man!

  • at first i hated this, but then i saw the version that was lip synched on Smothers Brothers and i eased up, then i watched this one again and marveled at how hard it must be to duplicate a records sound in front of a bunch of diners.

    First Edition!!!!

  • Boy, no doubt that this guy was going to make it.

  • Damn Stan.....let's hear it for the original Mr. Funkadelic on the bass, Kenny Rogers! Wow!!

  • I look like K, but i'm no Eskimo, not sure I can even spell, it or why you would care lol.

  • He holds a massive stature aswell the good mr Rodgers.

Rock on! The dame was foxy

  • Great yet raw. Man they were working for it in that room ( I've played there)...no monitors and those amps are LOUD. Kenny is bellowing on the high notes and still really contributing so much to the funkiness of the groove on bass. Hey is Mitch Miller "Sing along with Mitch" is at the first table on the left at the end ?

  • I didn't know Kenny Rogers was playing bass. Very impressive.

  • Hard to replicate the studio recording, but they do and OK job of it. "Just Dropped In" was the best thing Kenny Rogers ever did.

  • @moorlock2003 Exactly what I wrote on another posting of this song. LOL And it is indeed the best thing Kenny Rogers ever did.

  • kenny from the mean streets of houston by god texas

  • This is the song that started it all for the first edition, but it could have also ended here. Their second album bombed. However, they bounced back with their third album (which featured "Ruby" and "But You Know I Love You")!

You don't hear singers like Kenny on the charts these days ... and you don't hear real bands like the first edition anymore!

  • Amen to that Brother!!!

  • All kidding aside, Kenny was a great bass player.

  • Right on I knew Kenny was a punk!!!!

  • thats how everyone danced back then man. Pot actually makes people dance. i read a report on that ahmm

  • That girl singer dances like Elaine Benes.

  • That. Was. Awesome.

  • Fuck the GAMBLER!! This is Kenny at his best!

My mom would DIE if she saw this Kenny roastin that chicken :)

  • this is kenny at his best, but so is the gambler, so is through the years and so is the greatest. that's the thing about kenny... he is great at more than one style, he is the most diverse singer ever and that is why he is the greatest!

  • Did Kenney ever play bass again? Never knew he was a bass player.

  • Hmmmmmm.....

  • Kenny Rogers was the oldest member of the group and grew a beard so he could look younger.

  • far out man, groovy yea!

  • Yeah, Kenny's voice sucks here, but I like the super "funky" groove going on here in this live version.

  • This is a great song. It's too bad this version sounds like shit. Kenny can't hit the high notes and the music is crap.

  • wh ats wit h the unusu al spa cing by t he wa y?

  • Love this song. Kenny at his best. Hard to believe he was once this groovy..and a few short years later, he freefell into mainstream cornball bullshit..

  • Didn't the lead guitarist get electricuted on stage?

  • It sounds like he was being electrocuted while playing this song! Dude should have practiced some more...

  • My first 45 rpm single purchased. Age 10. 77 cents. Played the grooves off...

  • Wished they would have wrote more songs like this one. Seeing Kenny play bass is really cool to see.

  • Booooah!!! Now that's a BASS guitar....

  • Did Kenny Rodgers write this song?

  • No it was written by Mickey Newbury, although Kenny went on to write other great first edition numbers such as "goodtime liberator" and "there's a stranger in my place"

  • The drummer is Mickey Jones who toured with the Hawks backing up Dylan on his (in)famous '66 world tour when Levon Helm opted out of the gig.

  • well...... what can i say? groovy stuff!

  • Glad he actually could rock at one time!

  • It's a bit hard to rock when your 70 years old!

  • Now that's great! Never seen this...

  • also the lead guitar player's pretty good at replicating the solo but he's got nothing on Glen Campbell who played it on the studio version.

  • Glen Campbell played on the very first of the song, but the remainder, including the solo was Terry Williams. I was there!

  • @jeffkahl Terry did play it on the record. He's a good friend of mine. Glen played the backwards intro on the record.

  • funny hearing him singing the falsetto on the "yeah yeah oh yeahs" but neat to see a live version of this!

  • what size is kenny's jacket? :)

    great tune, great version !

  • Kitsch, but interesting just the same and for Kenny Rogers quite surreal.

  • Surreal.
