I think that CoD changes people. I stopped played FPS after 2 years and most of my friends are still obsessed about CoD by playing it everyday and talking about it all day. CoD should die and the return of the fighting game era is coming soon with Street Fighter x Tekken :D

I think an important point missed here is the fact that people will grow tired of an FPS in general, no matter how you try to change it. COD and BF aren't the only flaming FPS's remember like Halo and Crysis. People will grow tired of the genre in general and will move on. Remember the mid-late nineties when everyone went crazy for fighters in the wake of SF2???

And for the difficulty setting, the higher it gets, the more soldiers and special units, more vehicles, more traps, longer cooldown after alert of your sighting, reinforcements is doubled or tripled, after you have set the alarm for three times, the base gets a special reinforcement with the heaviest special units and vehicles - putting the base in a permanent alert stasus which creates an even bigger challenge to succeed in the mission in the storyline or just in skirmish mode with multiplayer

And make a nice AI too with alert cooldown, search parties, using vehicles randomly, reinforcements (thus no spawning of enemies) and that they roam around with maybe possible assignments like fixing a vehicle, walking in and out of buildings, talking to eachother, random alert drills where everybody comes in action and so on, like a real living base, random fly machine with additional soldiers and so on, making the mission as unpredictable as possible.

Alien shooters like Halo have another goal to achieve, I am getting sick of killing people all the time... And free roaming like in Delta Force maybe with some extra updates or weapons to find if you search well... With missions that appear to be everywhere, underwater, in space, underground with the settings of day and night, if you play a campaign longer then it was meant to be, you can play the mission when you want to after you did your search in the surroundings..
