great track!!! i have some videomusical ideas!, can i jam on it and make a video? of course i quote your nick for the authorship of the backing track ;)....
@trotters5 i think its because the Ionian is C for this backing track, which is why you can play D Dorian because it is the second interval in the major scale. If you want to play in the key of G for this you would need to play G Mixolydian. Hope that helps
Hye dud, nice backing tracks, what I need it the audio file to this track "Funky peppers" so that I can import that to my Adobe audtion so that I can record my front track over your backing, do you have a site when I can download this track in a mp4/3 ? let me know when you can dud..many thanks
I'm using all the proper modes whenever I try a backing track, but I never get a different sound, meaning I don't hear the different moods particular to each mode, but also it just doesn't sound like I'm hitting the right notes, even when I'm playing the proper scale.
@BDagys Suggestions, bust out the tuner and check the intonation. Check the strings tuning open and at the 12 fret harmonic, then check up the neck and make sure you don't have a bad fret or need a truss adjustment. If your guitar is in good shape, G Dorian and G minor pentatonic should both sound great, with the Dorian having the more singing quality, more melodic, and the Pentatonic of course being bluesier and a little more snarling. It makes for a great transition.
I've just started using the major scales different modes, and this track is so awesome to jam to.. Especially when you mix between pentatonic scale and the major. More of this please!
@GuitarJamTracks D dorian and D pentatonic, I've just started learning the different modes of the major so I'm a bit new to it at the moment... Although this track is awesome to improvise to.
I've gotta have the tabs for your songs. at least just the bass parts. i also like the site. Is there any way you could add a tabs section? I could use so many of your songs for my band. (just for jamming of course, not copyright infringement lol.)
@Racknepally Glad you like the track and the site. I wouldn't mind posting a tab for this track but this is one of the few tracks on my channel that i didn't record myself. I put it together from loops. So my guess would probably be as good as yours for the bass part. Seeing other people jam with my tracks is the highest form of a compliment. Thanks :)
This is a D minor modal piece. So the best scales to play here are D blues and D dorian. A natural minor has the same notes as D dorian and that is why it sounds like an A. D natural minor is a no go. You get conflicting notes there.
Such an awesome track! Thanks for posting! E phrygian dominant sounds cool on here too, and eminor gives it that lydian feel :) I am gonna upload a response on this in a couple hours :)
@Sulashua Just curious, maybe someone here can help me. Why wouldn't D natural minor work here? I'm assuming it's the minor 6th that doesn't work since that's the only difference the dorian scale would make. I can hear that it doesn't work, I'm just wondering if anyone can explain why? Is it the progression? I seem to be drowning myself in music theory. Thanks in advance.
Yes. It's that flat 6th of the natural minor that makes it sound bad here. Notice that the rythm guitar riff contains a B note (it plays C - B - C) . If you play a flat B (b6) you create a flat 9 interval which sounds disonant.
@pazazin10 - D natural minor does work, technically every note works over this vamp. Its all about context... In fact the Maj 3rd works over this vamp really well. These scales (but not limited to) would all work: D mixolydian, Dorian, Nat. Minor, Phrygian, D min pent, D major pent (B min Pent). Another nice flavor is adding the tritone to any of these scales, great with dorian, straight pent, and mixo. But again its all about context (tension and release) resolve with chord tones 1 3 5 (79)
@nopieonwednesday@Sulashua Thanks for your responses - I've been experimenting quite a bit with all this stuff and it's so refreshing to finally move past using ONLY minor pentatonic scales. I have found a few licks that include this flat 6th quite nicely, but only in passing. After I looked up what the tritone was (I'm still new to this) I ended up playing over the track twice just trying new ways to make it work. Fun fun - thanks again, happy jamming.

And shouldn't it be D phrygian not D dorian?

Can someone explain why the G dorian doesn't work? Shouldn't it be fine as the Ionian is F for this piece??!

@Dazzerx It was the flat 6th in the natural minor scale we were talking about. Which is why dorian works for this song.
