I purchased Adam's 45 minute video of Mojo for only a few bucks at tradebit.com. I'm an advanced beginner harp player and though some of the lesson was tough, I got the first twelve bar intro down in about a week (approx 2 hours of practice). Still needs tweaking and getting up to speed but Adam's instructional video with the tab is fantastic! Slow, steady and with lots of nuance. Highly recommend.
Adam... trust you to drive a truck that has a gear shift like a harp mic! ;-) Dr G can I ask you for a piece of advice?
I think the time has come for me to get a rig together... I've already decided on a mic (SM57) but only really have the dough to spring for one pedal.
What would you recommend as the first pedal choice for someone chasing that chicago sound? Thanks!
Hard to say. I've used a Boss DD-2 and DD-3 for the past 25 years. That's all I've used. I don't really know pedals. Jason Ricci has several terrific videos on the question of pedals. Check 'em out.
I have done actually, that's why I'm going for the SM57(!). But seeing that it was with your videos' help that I've learnt the instrument, I thought it best to ask the boss man first... as always Adam: thanks for everything.
I've been meaning to watch your massive amount of lessons but I always keep forgetting! I usually browse for a short tip on any of the harmonica people on Youtube, but your in depth analysis and rich collection of history is something none of the other folk I watch has. I heard you won't be at the WV State Harmonica Championship this year! Bummer! But I go to Marshall University and heard you'd might drop by the harp club down there sometime.
Hy Adam, great Video, again something new for me to learn with, and your Pick-Up...WOW, looks great, sounds great, just like his driver. Many thanks to you and your Videos, you helped me so much in practicing my harp play.
i once heard a very very funky version of got my mojo workin by jimmy smith , the take is like 8 minutes long but god it's funky, you should check it out, there's actually a live but shorter version here on youtube just look for jimmy smith got my mojo workin, thanks for the lesson
Thanks for answering the question I had been wanting to ask regarding lip pursing vs tongue blocking. Took a class at the local community college last week and the instructor insisted the correct way was to tongue block all the time. I tried but kept tripping on my tongue and had trouble bending.
Tongue blocking is indeed the "correct way to play" and it does make bending rather hard.
I took some lessons with Jimi Lee and he taught me how to bend when you're tongue blocking. Also he taught me that some moves are better done by lip pursing. I can share this info with you if you want.
Hi Adam! I'll take you up on this! PLEASE talk about bending while tongue blocking. I'd also like to throw in my nickel's worth... I don't think it matters which way you play when you play. IF you can make it work for you, IF you tape yourself and it sounds right, then do it in that way. Everybody is different. Jerry Portnoy talks about lip pursing on the first three then tongue blocking four and up. I find that the more you can comfortably shift styles, the more versatile you'll be.
may I enthusiastically recommend the two live versions, Butterfield on harp with Muddy, at the Cosmic Joy Scout Jamboree, which are the last tracks on Fathers and Sons (1969)?
Adam, It has been a pleasure learning from you. I picked up the harp after going and seeing Terry McMillan, who went to my high school, just a few yrs. ahead of me. I like his style. He is also on Youtube, he use to play in Nashville. I also like Buddy Greene, Jon Gindick, Jason Ricci, and of course you, all these players have different styles, but I believe that to expand one must be open to learn from as many styles as one can find. If you are every in Alaska, let me know,.
Not only are your lessons great they are also very entertaining. Love the truck. As they say real blues guys drive trucks not Honda sedans. I also don't think you talk too much.
I like when you talk. I can feel your passion through the words you are using. I think I couldn't play blues in a hurry. So I respect what you are giving to me by listening to you very carefully. Thanks for the Crossroads, I'd like to visit this place...
Great lesson Adam. I don't understand how some people can complain about you talking to much when a harp player of your talent and ability is giving away your experience for free. The people that complain need to keep their mouth shut and listen and learn. Thanks again for being my inspiration to become a better harp player. Oh, I also think you have a great teaching style.
Love the creative film angles, subtle music in back ground. Very nice, adds alot. But I'm ok with the straight forward in your face, it aint always pretty or entertaining stuff too!
The truck is a beast. Great lesson too!. You mentioned early on that people have said you talk too much. The opposite is true, thats why all your subscribers love you, you keep it real and personal.
Even though your followers love the harp, listening to you perspective on stuff, and your philosophies is one of the things we look forward too.
Man, whoever says you talk to much has no idea of the freedom of speech, let alone the freedom of music!! As always, it's a pleasure for you talk to much to me again!! I can't believe some people actually hear the "talk" over the bigger picture! Makes me want to cut my ears off sometimes... Oh yeah, then I would be a painter, not a musician!
Liked the lesson, loved the truck! I didn't like the video frame rate though. Have you started encoding differnetly, or been using different compression rate?
Thank You for the enlightenment of Mother Mojo and this little teaser...You got my Mojo making me study to get her workin' better....You are the most mobile Harp teacher I never met in person. Thanks for another awesome lesson! 5/5 Stars.
