Russian cars are just like their most famous gun, AK-47. They're simple, rugged, loud, uncomfortable...but damn..there will never come a day when they won't work. Sure there will be days when they won't start, or won't open...but eventually they will get going again.

I'm not sure whether the Chaikas or Zils were ever in private hand in the old Soviet Union, I think that they were primarily used as staff cars. The Volgas, on the other hand, were sold to private citizens and were even exported at one time. The Vellorex was a pre war cycle car from Czechoslovakia, the Tatras were also based on a pre war, pre communist mechanical design but restyled. The Trebant used a pre war two cycle engine from a pre war DKW, the old DKW plant was in East Germany.
@General1N With all due respect, have you ever had the chance to look at other cars? Even really bad American cars are worlds better than Russian cars, not to mention good or even average German or Japanese cars. Don't get me wrong, I really like most of the Russian people I have met but the system they lived under was not exactly promoting extream competition to build the latest & greatest products. That said. I want one or maybe two. The Chaika and maybe something an average person might have.
@shananagans5 but you gotta agree, what they lacked in one arey, they gained significantly in others, like Fighter Hets and their space industry, very high tech for their time!!!

No...you are the idiot. He means that the shape of the word when it is written in Russian is similar to how "KAPUT" is shaped when spelled in English. He does not mean the actual Russian translation of it.
ive lived in a communist country and i believe communism, capitalism and natzionalism(or however u write it) are same in the basics. every 1 of em had the same ultimate goal: get the power to the hands of the few who created it, with sum kinky shit on the sideline for nazis

Do you know why communists are always talking about nazism and fascism? Because communism killed more than the Nazis did. Get yourself a time machine to live under Stalin if you think communism is any good.
@ruiferreira89 You cant call communism bad just because it had one bad leader, capitalism killed more people, in the 50's communism was getting more popular in the US so the US government eecuted and killed communist's and their fammilies just because they believed in communism. Thats more cold hearted than anything stalin has ever done.
@REPOMAN24722 What about the forced collectivisation of agriculture in Russia by Lenin, that let farmers all over Russia to starve? What about Stalin's Great Purge that left the armed forces unable to fight back the Germans? What about Gulags? Forced labour? Well, I had (must read, "made the mistake of buying...") an english Rover 414 in the early 2000´s, and trust me, it wasn´t a good car... So, I don´t know why these english men are so hilarious about the Lada.... Now I´ve heard that modern mini coopers are better than the older ones.... but, That`s because England does not have car industry of their own anymore? I mean, they sold everything to foreign companies, aren´t they? Correct me if i´m wrong about de data.
@srspower CZECHOSLOVAKIA (not chezoslavakia as you have written) WASN´T EVER a part of the Soviet Union. It was a regular state, as for example German Democratic republic, Poland etc. Use the Google:-)
Oh come on. Czechoslavakia, East Germany and Poland may have been so called 'independant states' but you know as well as i do they had puppet communist soviet serving governments.
@srspower Yes, I agree with this. They really were the satellites of the USSR, but officialy were idependant. Not as for example Ukraine, Geogia etc. These were official part of the USSR.
@dude4rmUtah - it's Andy Wilman, the executive producer of 'new' top gear. And this is way before Hammond and black stig - they came along in 2002 with the new formal; this is proper 'old' tg from the 1990s.
Among those cars, that drove out,you could see a military green jeep. Now thats the place, where soviet machinery starts to prove itself. Its the GAZ-69 4x4 and its capable of beating any Range or Land Rover.Oh and you wont need anything more complicated than a rock or a hammer or a wrench to fix it.
@Henzzman capable to beat any Range or Land Rover??? alright, i admit, i have never driven any soviet or post-soviet car, but to beat any rangie or especially Land Rover Defender you must have enough experience to say it. they may be better than any fake offrader BMW or Mercedes makes nowadays, but definitely nowhere near the Land Rover or the rangie.
Its very reliable for starters. And it can climb better and its better in mud too.I myself own a Kraz-255B truck, google it and you will see what kind of offroading that thing could do.
Yeah those Commie wheels were pretty badski, especially when the hood/bonnet lever says "Kaput"! I guess that's what happened to you, your car, or both if you opened it.
no, I totally agree with you, soviet cars are crap :D
Many people after getting new Lada's had to pretty much take them apart and put them back together again, making sure that all the screws were tight lol
about that ''lack of mechanical knowledge wich they where not given'' it is so untrue... any owner of a car in that time going on longer trip had sets of tools some spairs and easly could fix allmost everything... nobody used garages in that time... top gear think that if they were poor so allso had to be dumb...
I totally get the appeal of Soviet cars. They are a rebuke to the mindless complexity of modern cars. I look down my nose at the hordes of soulless modern cars whilst driving my pristine VW Beetle!
I wouldn't mind having a Chaika M-14. It's has more modern lines and amenities than the Soviet copy of the Packard Clipper, the M-13.
Russian cars are just like their most famous gun, AK-47. They're simple, rugged, loud, uncomfortable...but damn..there will never come a day when they won't work. Sure there will be days when they won't start, or won't open...but eventually they will get going again.

Yeah those Commie wheels were pretty badski, especially when the hood/bonnet lever says "Kaput"! I guess that's what happened to you, your car, or both if you opened it.
ricepaddy69 2 years ago
It doesnt say "Kaput", It sais "Kapot", which is russian for "hood"
Topgear were just making a joke
kristijonazz 2 years ago 39
Alright, I'll give you that, which isn't much of a relief because "kapot" is Dutch for broken, which is probably what those motors did quite often.
ricepaddy69 2 years ago
no, I totally agree with you, soviet cars are crap :D
Many people after getting new Lada's had to pretty much take them apart and put them back together again, making sure that all the screws were tight lol
kristijonazz 2 years ago
@kristijonazz Then it still is a good joke for us Dutch though. Kaput is the German word for broken, and Kapot is de Dutch word for broken. :P

about that ''lack of mechanical knowledge wich they where not given'' it is so untrue... any owner of a car in that time going on longer trip had sets of tools some spairs and easly could fix allmost everything... nobody used garages in that time... top gear think that if they were poor so allso had to be dumb...

what a load of dumb, unfunny horseshit

he should have driven the Tatra 603!:(

I totally get the appeal of Soviet cars. They are a rebuke to the mindless complexity of modern cars. I look down my nose at the hordes of soulless modern cars whilst driving my pristine VW Beetle!
I wouldn't mind having a Chaika M-14. It's has more modern lines and amenities than the Soviet copy of the Packard Clipper, the M-13.

I must say that I really do like that Chaika. Really nice looking vehicle. One thing that I am not crazy about it is the push button transmission.
