...I saw their website and fell in love with the shop. I found the site informative and straight forward. My partner and I dropped by to pay them a visit and were greeted with a smile, and given helpful tools of finding the right bike for me. Though not finding a bike that night, we were welcomed to stop by again in hopes a 60cm would be there for me to bring home. You guys ROCK!!!
Definately a great place to feel at ease, with no attitude and helpful employees to boot; Box Dog Bikes Rule!!! Bike-less myself, I have been in the market for another way of transpertation, other than walking, in SF....
Nicely done interview/video. It accomplishes its objective. I want to go there. I want to see Angel and Dan succeed. I'd like to be in the mix. Good luck to them both.
A Pitt Bull in the store with a goal of high wages and health care do not allow profit sharing in the real world. Worker owned is cool but I promise the lady owner has never managed a bike shop and has never employed people with health care. At $15 hour and health care, a mechanic must produce at least $45 an hour times 8 hours= $340 in labor. Good luck.. Your might be already wealthy and in only that case it might work out.
You are right that I have never managed a business or offered healthcare. I was quite naive when this film was made 2 years ago. But overall things are going quite well. The shop is still growing after two years with no end in sight. With the cooperative model, we have really dedicated worker-owners who are totally committed to the success of the business. And now that we've worked so hard to get the business successful, we're choosing a healthcare plan and getting raises. Angel
Here in San Francisco, there are a few bike shops with similar business plans to ours that are quite successful. (Of course they don't have a pitt bull.) I think the market in this area is strong enough to support our cooperative business that supports workers with a living wage, healthcare and a stimulating work environment. -Angel
I am curious though how you figured your $340 in labor. Are you saying that $45/hr is how much we'll need to bring in to cover healthcare and wages? I'm always interested in learning more about running my business. Angel
This shop is not as good without Seth.
