If it appears on your calendar (and it does) then you should KNOW it is real and important to someone.
In this case it is very important to African Americans who embrace their African roots. Though I am black I do not celebrate Kwanzaa but I know that it is of tremendous importance to African Americans in the "Consciousness Movement".
To the best of my knowledge, Magick is traditionally defined as the art and science of causing change to occur in conformity with Will. In my tradition, Magick is a separate practice from the rituals I use to worship and honor the Goddess and God. I ask them to assist and bless my spells but the casting is really up to me.
Doing magical working isn't just for you. It is also to honor the Gods. Don't decline practice because you don't need anything. Recognize the practices as a thank you as well. 1 star.
@loumil4 See, I don't see magickal workings are a way to honor the Gods. I see the ritual as a way to honor the Gods. I see it as the magickal energy is part of them and I wouldn't want to do a magickal working just to take something from them. Also, I show my honor for the Gods in many way may it be offerings, prayers, or meditation.
@outandabout12 Lou is coming from a......more traditional view point. To some paths like Heathenry or those who are Traditional Celtic Pagans the ritual isn't for magic. Magic might be done but its minor compaired to honoring and worshiping first and foremost. I think that is the main diffrence from more Traditional Paganism compaired to paths like Wicca. Mean no offense just stating.
While there are varying opinions, generally in Wicca magic can be performed within or outside of circle/ritual. The normal ritual structure of Wicca has a time set aside specifically for magical work. Many Wiccans see rituals, prayers, offerings, etc as ways of honoring the gods. While magic can be used to honor them as well; it is usually seen as a separate practice and when deity is involved it is usually in the role as guide/teacher or asking their assistence to help manifest the spell.
@outandabout12 - Magical energy comes from you as well. You can draw in energy from the world around you to gain extra energy or replenish what you spent. Magic comes from within you and does not require deity if you do not wish it. Also, as far as taking from deities I would not concern yourself with that. They will decide if they wish to assist you or not. So it would be their decision and the energy they use would be a gift. You cannot take anything from a deity unless they allow you.
@loumil4 Agreed Lou. To me in my path I might do magic but if I do any its all minor and towards the end of the Celebrating. To me Celebrating/Celebration (most would call ritual) is first and more imporant about the Gods Sidhe and Ancestors. About ones relationship with the Divine and sacrenedness with that around them.
It depends on your belief system and this is not limited to Wicca. There are some that believe you only practice magic when you have a need. There are different camps within that belief system that have different reasons for believing that. Personally I think it should be practiced often because as they say, practice makes perfect. If you hardly ever do spell work, then when you really need it you might not be able to get it to work. Also, deities are not required to perform magic.
it is real, it was made up by a black man in the 60s to help black people discover their roots. That was during the time when it was in to create your own african name if you were black and to stop the use of your 'slave' name.
I love the cut outs! That and that you have your own language. :)
