"Vienna" was kept off the UK #1 slot by John Lennon's "Woman" for a week, and THEN by Joe Dolce's novelty hit, "Shaddap You Face", something for the old folk always wins
Midge Ure and the gang must of felt like banging their heads against a brick wall, ok, Vienna was a good song and made it to No 1, but they made 6 or 7 great songs that never got near, including this one, a band who were way ahead of their time, their songs still sound great today, listen to Muse, they have a sound very much like Ultravox in style and context.
@fatneck7 In the Uk, Vienna was kept of number 1 by a shit novelty track called SHADUPA YA FACE. by some none entity faux italian or American twat, called Joe Dolce......What a travesty....Lament is a chilling peice of synth pop that will never be bettered.
Was never a fan of ULTRAVOX and yet I bought the album in 1984 ...and this song conjures up ' a memory ' , at its very best ... ..For me personally the song doesnt really stretch too far but its moody tone sets the theme ..
Shame we can't go back to the 80's ... music-wise. Song lyrics meant something then and the music was just so much better, whether it be Bauhaus, Ultravox, Bowie, Queen, Michael Jackson. There are a few good artists these days but back "in the days" it was a case of a few bad ones! Remember seeing Midge Ure with "Slik" in the 70's on TOTP. Brilliant!
@TheRATTLEHEAD75 I know those songs well--used Man of Two Worlds as a composition mule to get the kinks out of a synthesizer rig, and dancing with tears in my eyes is a favorite, but Lament is still the one that shreds me. I dug it out of my vinyl collection just to make sure that it wasn't due to changes in the sound values (some songs do better in digital media, some do better in analog), and it wasn't. That song still does it 20(?) years after first listening--either way I play it.
BEST track from the cd Lament. This group of musicians are one of the reasons why I do music myself. Looking forward to a new album, following myTwitter LeNaSmileyStar and learn that new and exiting things are happening.
Anyone who has loved and lost can relate to this beautifully emotive track. All jeans in the early 80's were incredibly tight. Stunning scenery. Been to a celidh and they are awesome. xxx
@willowwitch1966 That's right. It was incredibly good work made by U Vox . It's among their the best slower songs for sure, when i listen to it i feel myself as i I was back again in the middle of 80' s !
Gorgeous place..Midge copped off with that woman on video..Wouldn't mind but she was due to be married.....hmm. Love ultravox have done since 81.I scratched their names all over my desk at school...saw midge other week at 80's concert. He still has it....x
this is a cool song. by a cool band. always loved ultravox. they were way ahead of the times. but what is it with those flamin' wellies our midge has on (bloody things show up in a half dozen of the boys videos).

Everything seemed happily greysh in the 80's. Yes, the oxymoron is intentional.
