Nope, not a cell phone, it's something we used to call a walkie-talkie.
If you see a war movie covering WWII or Korea, you may see what looks like an extra large green brick with a projection they speak into. When I was a kid, they made toy versions with MUCH less power & range [FCC regulations].
But Star Trek Communicators? HA! These were walkie-talkies with a cover stuck on the front.
[If you can FIND a set though, they are probably so rare as to be worth a fortune.]
"Captain, there's been a death." "The guy wearing the red jersey?" "Yes, Captain. How did you know?" "The guy wearing the red jersey dies every episode. Don't worry about it."
Kevin this is Scott, Kevin this is Scott do you hear me? Over and out. Over and OUT??? He's calling for the other kid AND signing OFF at the same time? WTF?? LOL
@sirvegeta whats REALLY funny is "range 1300 feet" at 1300 feet one kid couldnt SEE the other? he needed this walkie talkie to find him? Man these were some DUMB kids
I had a set of these. Remember they interfered with CB signals. My mom got on there once and said 'Redbird this is Bluebird" and some guy said "Who in the hell is Bluebird?" Good times, good times.
I had a set of these. Remember they interfered with CB signals. My mom got there once and said 'Redbird this is Bluebird" and some guy said "Who in the hell is Bluebird?" Good times, good times.
@johnbubbanewsdude well its not that they interfere with CB signals because they were designed to be on CB frequencies. Thats really the only band something like that could have been on back then
Yes they operated on what was then Channel 14 but at such a low power level youd have to be OUTSIDE a guys house with YOUR anttena touching HIS and then MAYBE he would hear you LOL
@rf396 LOL...i remember the real cheap walkie talkies....what I noticed about most of these cheapos is that they recieved far better than they transmitted
Wow, I remember those walkie talkies. I was 11 back in 1975. Didn't have one, but I had the Mego ST Tricorder and that banana-seat bike. If Scott needed a hand patching up the bike tire or putting the chain back on, I could've helped like I did for my kid brother.
so what i'm wondering is, After his friend got there to help him with his bike...exactly what did he do? I'm sure his friend knew little more about bike-fixing then he did...
I had them :) and I remember they came set to ch14 on cb! I met allot of people then thru it. now at 41 I'm a ham radio operator and thanks to them, I met a club dj that was on cb radio cause of him today I'm a dj/producer of dance music, and own a fm radio station. Those days were simple and fun.
@minimaluhftv I recall alot of simple handheld CB radios had set crystals for channel 14. (I had a Tandy 3 channel walkie talkie in the 80's; it came with channel 14 and space for two optional crystals.) Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe 14 was also the official "calling channel" as assigned by the FCC back in the semi-regulated days of the early 1960's-70's. I've often wondered if there was some connection. Do you know if this was mandated channel at some point?
I had the Star Trek walkie talkies and the Star Trek phaser rifle; it was great fun, I really liked Star Trek. I had an entire fantasy of boldly going where no man has gone before to phaser them; this was before puberty, thus I did not understand the short skirts until much later for the lusty spacemen; but I did understand space cowboy, and we phaser everything with the communicator alert as I watched every battle scene. Fun times.
@MattTheSaiyan as far as your question " do any companies still sell walkie-talkies?"....yes.....but today they are just hand held CB sets with 40 channels on them instead of just one. Radio shack, Midland and a few other companies still make them. I really miss the era of CB. When I couldn't sleep at night I would switch on the CB and there was always something interesting going on....usually some feud going on, lot of idle threats etc....it was hilarious
oh is THAT the truth!!!! LOL My friends and I started OUT all official and polite. Till we figured out that it was alot more fun to ruin the adults good time lol. Boy the threats that were made...ahahahhahhahahaa. Good times for sure. Pulling all nighters in the summer and actually watching TV stations SIGN OFF! Then watching them come back on at dawn. Damn I want my life back. Anybody got a time machine?????
@rf396 my favorite thing was to listen to all the feuds going on......the most common threat I used to hear was...."I am going to find you and bring an army of friends to your house and rip your antenna down dragging your CB with it"...or other variations of that...........The constant real life threats is what made CB so fun. It was like a thousand Howard Stern's were on all at once....it was vile, crude & childish, and that was just fine with me
i also had a set when i was a kid.was heartbroken when dad come home and parked car in driveway over one of the walkie's..:( unlike spoiled kids today mine were never replaced..double frown :( :(
@ASH6977 im as old as you, I had these when I was a kid too. But dad replacing something he broke isnt a child being spoiled, its a dad being responsible for his actions ;)
I had a set of these when I was a kid. One worked and the other only received but did not transmit. I remember the guy at the store complaining as he went through about a dozen sets to find two that worked together. He said that most of them had to be returned to Mego. I suppose one was set to the wrong channel since they were just Channel 14 walkie-talkies. Ah, to be an ignorant kid again!
Not only did I own these as a kid, my name is Scott and my best friend (who remains my best friend to this day) is Kevin! (and no, we weren't the kids in the commercial, but I KNOW we played with those damn walkies as kids)!

That's an extremely common error in anything with a radio. It is perpetuated by movies and TV shows which use the phrase.
