I'm jealous of all the people that commented on this video saying they saw Bowie as the Thin White Duke perform live. Stacy Heydon is definitely my fav Bowie gutarist - especially his playing on Station to Station on the Nassau bootleg. Great stuff...please pass on my regards and admiration!
I was so Lucky enough to see This show, 2 nights @ The Spectrum in Philadelphia. I Was Blown Away Y'all. Station To Station Live shows should have been recorded & released as a Live Bowie release. This touring ensamble was Fantastic. Get the feeling I still love watching this ?
"Just because I believe don't mean I don't think as well". Bowie was so good, wasn't he? Cracking set of films, by the way. Thanks. I can't believe this lp was out 32 years ago - I can still remember buying it!!
Amongst all the live versions of Stay I've heard, no one can be compared to the Station To Station studio version...That's so strong...you can't avoid moving...
Your brother-in-law can PLAY - I always dug his work on the live "Stay" on the Ryko edition of Station to Station. Listening now to the Nassau Coliseum concert on Wolfgang's Vault - awesome. The guy is even more underrated than Earl Slick!
I recall every detail to the 76 performance of the Station to Station Tour in Milwaukee, WI. David has presented this as some of his best work over the decades. It still gives me chills 32 yrs later. The last time I saw David perform was four years ago and he was HOT! Keep rockin my thin white duke! Your legend and fans stand!!!
Stacey Heydon a Toronto boy,and we were there, would not trade these memories for a million.
Dave is in town, his fave city T.O. this very week, we have spotted him and Iman twice and the third time we went up to them and inquired he jkust said something 'might' be up!
you saw and talked to him!? Wow, how exciting and how did he look? Healthy I hope? Do you think maybe he meant a tour? Thanks for sharing that with us repel
the great for me being 48 is I seen Bowie at his best and couldn't wait to see what he would come up with next. That coustume he had on singing the jean genie on the 1980 floor show still tops it for me....just awesome it was
I heard from a friend says Bowie is very thin in duke era, also known for it's his best vocal in mid-70s. I can't notice such things when I listening to the album Station To Station.
the thin white duke was bowie's coolest alter-ego for sure, well except for ziggy stardust of course. but he was sooo good right at that time i mean station to station and low are a couple of his most underrated albums in my opinion.
Underrated?? Low and Station to Station? By whom? Those two albums are generally considered amongst his best, Low in particular. Although I would say that Diamond Dogs is maybe a bit underrated..
How beautiful. Congratulations! I got in to Bowie in 1972 when I was 15!I've experienced a myriad of music since then, but his music still excites me, and amazingly to me, my 17 year old daughter and her friends have started to get in to him recently. He IS a genius.
I wish I was born in 1947 rather than 1994, cuz David is the best and that is when he was born I would like it 2 be around that year now so that I wouldnt have 2 be 61 years old now but it would still be great!
the BEST band he's ever put together. the '78 tour was really good, too, but here it's just so tight. and to think these were only the rehearsals. if you can get the bootleg from Nassau Colesium '76 you'll know what I'm talking about. they should remaster it and put it out as a live album. it surpasses David Live and Stage.
I bought David Live and Stage few months ago. I don't have the Nassau Colesium '76. I only have the downloaded one. I believe it's the Station To Station tour one you talked about. Bowie's vocal transition sounds better than David Live and Stage. As for music, Stage was quite a cannon.
I like Station to Station tour the most, but those backing vocalists are awful (Carlos Alomar, i bet, is one of them. Excellent guitarist, but awful singer).
The Station to Station Tour was the first rock concert I ever went to. I was fifteen! The concert started with Salvador Dali/Luis Bunuel's "Un Chien Andalou" projected on a huge screen - the razor slitting the eyeball - it scared the hell out of me. Thank you for this footage!
I adore this alter ego the most.... he maybe darker but there's something evern sexier bout The Thin White Duke. Bowie is a total star, not just becaus of his voice, his alter ego's his magnificent shows or lyrics but because of who he is inside... and he is beautiful, one of a kind...... there will never be another who can even get a million miles close. : D
realising this exists has almost made me cry, it's that fucking great a find. I just never realised there was any footage of 'word on a a wing' quite this raw, atmospheric, devastatingly brilliant (add adjectives to taste) on this intertube thingy.
I'm trying hard to fit among with your scheme of things... And now, I really loved Station to Station...TVC 15, Wild is the wind...beautiful... my favourite could be Word On A Wing...anyway
David Bowie makes cocaine seem so cool. I mean Station to Station probably isn't the best Bowie album (maybe it is) but it is the coolest. He says he was so high he doesn't remember making this album. But it's so damn good. So good. Word on A Wing is his best vocal performance.
I am completely obsessed with this performance, I have watched it several times now. I even bought the record Station to Station mostly because of this and I absolutely love the record.
And yet, this is just a rehearsal. I am starstruck and also very jealous to those who saw him live as Thin White Duke.
Agreed, though I also love the guitar riff at the very beginning of Stay here, since it seems to emerge out of nothingness right after World On A Wing. It sounds very confusing in a cool way because it transports you in a very different mood in 5 seconds or so, very dreamy. :)
I saw the show in 76 He was larger than life up there on stage.. I had front row seats. The band was incredibly loud and precise. He just sang and moved to the side of the stage alot to let the musician do there thing. I was 15 at the time and remember everything about the show to this day.. It is inbedded in my head especially seeing these videos again... I wish we could purchase these shows at the record stores. Stay is awsome...
Hi , sorry to bother you but is there a 10 minute drum solo in the bootleg vinyl..? I think I had to tape when I was 17 . I got it off the radio and I remember a drum solo. Seems lightyear ago.
No I was 16 when they played this concert on the radio in Boston. I saw the show in 76. I remember a drum solo. I wish i had the bootleg copy to listen to now!!! Anyone?! bye
Wow you must be a very intelligent person? And probably a very spiritual person too, open to new ideas and new thoughts. Very cordial, very accepting and calm tempered! Now do everyone a favor and find that rock so you can crawl back under it OK? Thx
gary would you happen to know what type of amps carlos was using ? I recall that it was roland JC-120s but its been over 30 years so I can't be sure. thanks
It's funny that for the line up's the longest standing guitarist seemed to be forgotten?! I never saw the name of guitarist/bandleader Carlos Alomar. In charge from about '74 till mid '80's
BADASS solo. As is expected, if you're playing with Bowie you better be on top of your game. Anyone know where I can snag this whole rehearsal performance or find some STS tour boots?
WOW.. Stacy Heydon on the Telecaster, super funky. I wanna go back in a Time Machine to see a '76 show. And he is your brother-in-law & a golf pro ??? hehe
I can see the Hendrix influence in his technique... does he still play guitar? I'm on the verge of buying a telecaster, but there's great variety.. I need some tips from your brother-in-law please ...hehe
I was at 2 out of 3 of these shows at the L.A. Forum fucking brilliant, I have to say by the time I left the 2nd show my head was about to split, but well worth it, and I have seen every tour since then, oh yes I was at the "Diamond Dogs" show also in '74. I even saw the 2 Tin Machine tours in 89 & 91 brilliant.
I will be 50 in Dec 07, and I am still a fan. rock on
Adrian Belew 90' tour, beyond that i'm not sure, Reeves Gabrel / Tin Machine, has played live some. im a life-long Bowie fan from Memphis who at 47' still has Ziggy-memorabillia up in my den. lol
unclebaggie, U know your artist, Reeves toured w/ Bowie in 89 & 91 w/Tin Machine, and in '97 on the Earthling tour. I quess they had a fallout because for the 'hours... mini tour, it was Page Hamilton who was/is in the band 'Helmut' great guitarist. Later..
i shoulda watched the whole thing, but baseball was on! watching the rest of it i see heydon. alomar did come up w/ the riff, i believe. and wasn't earl slick in there somewhere? caught a show at the forum in LA around '74. heydon played that gig and ripped it up. good show! thanks for the correction. what happened to him?
Earl Slick wasn't on that tour, replaced by Stacy who is still alive and well in LA. Produces music and is a golf pro at a golf club in Sherman Oaks,CA
golf pro????? outstanding!!!!! i play about 130 rounds a year. completely addicted. got a brother in ventura area who plays so i'm over there 4-6 times a year. got to play riviera once! got killed... i can't believe somebody hasn't picked him up for a band...he tore that tour up!
This rehearsal footage is incredible, thanks so much Gary. It affords us a rare glimpse of the man who's unprecidented contribution to contemporary culture will not be fully appreciated and understood until the final chapter has been written.
blast from the past... Stacey lived across the street growing up. Gave my brother guitar lessons. He would come home and then teach me the riffs... House of the Rising Sun..etc.. . Brother in Law? I may have been the altar boy at your wedding?

The Station to Station Tour was the first rock concert I ever went to. I was fifteen! The concert started with Salvador Dali/Luis Bunuel's "Un Chien Andalou" projected on a huge screen - the razor slitting the eyeball - it scared the hell out of me. Thank you for this footage!

The Thin White Duke gives me impure thoughts!!

SebastianDeSoir 4 years ago
David Bowie makes cocaine seem so cool. I mean Station to Station probably isn't the best Bowie album (maybe it is) but it is the coolest. He says he was so high he doesn't remember making this album. But it's so damn good. So good. Word on A Wing is his best vocal performance.

bowie/ carlos alomar, blew the cobwebs off the apollo . glasgow.with this as well.... memories still the best tour ive ever seen...

I am completely obsessed with this performance, I have watched it several times now. I even bought the record Station to Station mostly because of this and I absolutely love the record.
And yet, this is just a rehearsal. I am starstruck and also very jealous to those who saw him live as Thin White Duke.
sundaymonday777 4 years ago 4

Bemywife1 4 years ago 3
*sigh* So jealous... well, maybe I should be happy about seeing him live at least once.
It is such a shame that Station to Station tour wasn't filmed. These are the only proper films I've seen of him as Thin White Duke.

I have a Vinyl bootleg of a New York show from this tour. What a band what a powerhouse performance it is. i will never tire of its brilliance
demonsbutterfly 4 years ago 2
Hi , sorry to bother you but is there a 10 minute drum solo in the bootleg vinyl..? I think I had to tape when I was 17 . I got it off the radio and I remember a drum solo. Seems lightyear ago.
Bemywife1 4 years ago
No I was 16 when they played this concert on the radio in Boston. I saw the show in 76. I remember a drum solo. I wish i had the bootleg copy to listen to now!!! Anyone?! bye

Dude, I really think that the only guitarists on this tour were Carlos Alomar and Earl Slick. Great video though.
Pattopaco 4 years ago
You think wrong! Stacy Heydon replaced Earl Slick on this tour, then played with Iggy Pop after the tour. Watch the videos and you will see.
GaryWhite 4 years ago
okay so is he playing with Alomar?
Pattopaco 4 years ago
Yes, he played with Carlos Alomar on this tour. Also, Dennis Davis on Drums, George Murray on base, Tony Kaye on keyboards.
GaryWhite 4 years ago
absolutely correct-This is the best touring band Bowie assembled that i have heard anyway

What is the appeal? A gender confused addict singing cheezy lounge music--poorly. I really don't get it.

It's funny that for the line up's the longest standing guitarist seemed to be forgotten?! I never saw the name of guitarist/bandleader Carlos Alomar. In charge from about '74 till mid '80's
ShyCupid 4 years ago
BADASS solo. As is expected, if you're playing with Bowie you better be on top of your game. Anyone know where I can snag this whole rehearsal performance or find some STS tour boots?

WOW.. Stacy Heydon on the Telecaster, super funky. I wanna go back in a Time Machine to see a '76 show. And he is your brother-in-law & a golf pro ??? hehe
I can see the Hendrix influence in his technique... does he still play guitar? I'm on the verge of buying a telecaster, but there's great variety.. I need some tips from your brother-in-law please ...hehe
Zziggi 4 years ago
I was at 2 out of 3 of these shows at the L.A. Forum fucking brilliant, I have to say by the time I left the 2nd show my head was about to split, but well worth it, and I have seen every tour since then, oh yes I was at the "Diamond Dogs" show also in '74. I even saw the 2 Tin Machine tours in 89 & 91 brilliant.
I will be 50 in Dec 07, and I am still a fan. rock on

great guitar work! there was some discussion earlier as to who played guitar for David
on certain tours/yrs, they are as follows...
Mick Ronson 72 & 73' tour... Earl Slick 74 & 75' tour
Stacy Heydon 76' tour... Adrian Belew 78' tour
Earl Slick 83' tour... Peter Frampton 87' tour
Adrian Belew 90' tour, beyond that i'm not sure, Reeves Gabrel / Tin Machine, has played live some. im a life-long Bowie fan from Memphis who at 47' still has Ziggy-memorabillia up in my den. lol
unclebaggie 4 years ago
unclebaggie, U know your artist, Reeves toured w/ Bowie in 89 & 91 w/Tin Machine, and in '97 on the Earthling tour. I quess they had a fallout because for the 'hours... mini tour, it was Page Hamilton who was/is in the band 'Helmut' great guitarist. Later..

i shoulda watched the whole thing, but baseball was on! watching the rest of it i see heydon. alomar did come up w/ the riff, i believe. and wasn't earl slick in there somewhere? caught a show at the forum in LA around '74. heydon played that gig and ripped it up. good show! thanks for the correction. what happened to him?
billfrain 4 years ago
Earl Slick wasn't on that tour, replaced by Stacy who is still alive and well in LA. Produces music and is a golf pro at a golf club in Sherman Oaks,CA
