Mary Martin has the best voice of all! The Lonely Goatherd is my favorite song of my youth. I love singing it.The Sound of Music 1959 is my favorite album.
@vultureqn You are missing a lot if you haven't heard Mary Martin. She was a wonderful singer. She starred in South Pacific. See if you can find and hear her recordings of The Bandwagon and Babes in Arms.
I have this and have never listened to it! This is my favorite song from The Sound of Music. I don't think I've ever heard Mary Martin before. I'm a singer and this is one of the most difficult songs, even without the yodeling. Thanks for the post!
For some reason, it wouldn't upload when I did the others, and I've since lost my digital copy of the musical. I'll have to rip my CD again sometime soon- thank you for reminding me!
No on all counts. Maria sang this to the children since they were frightened of the thunderstorm in progress. In the movie Maria sung My Favorite Things to the children during this scene. In the stage production Maria and Mother Superior sing My Favorite Things before Maria leaves the convent.
Fantastic Always love Mary Martin singing this in the original production. She used to train with her fitness instructor using boxing gloves and a punch bag to prepare herself for singing this role in 1959 to produce big tones the way she yoodles in this show in certainly worked!!

Love this woman. Julie Andrews is amazing, great too, but I love the way Mary's voice sounds...
