this song was adapted into sundanese (Indonesia) version way back to 1936 by one of our greatest maestro with a help from a russian artist live in Bandung....I find about it just recently which answers my curiosity why it has such a different melody from other sundanese songs....it is, remain, a beautiful song...
A friend just saw him perform in San Francisco a few days ago. The audience wouldn't let him leave until he sang five encores! I didn't know what a wonderful performer he was until I started looking at videos on Youtube. What a hunk!
@4gregorysf WHAT??? I watched him in Los Angeles around 1 month ago, we only got 3 encores, that's not fair!!! But yeah, the experience was just phenomenal, I am a musical theater performer and I now start to study lieder singing, so I actually listen to a lot of good singers in many different styles including opera all the time, he is the BEST singer I've ever heard in live. And how fortunately that I got his autograph!!
I've never known a Russia who couldn't sing.......... and sing with such passion and soul, it makes one's head spin. Whether it's solo or chorus, they give it all they have.
What brilliant voice and presence. Some Russian music has a deep soulfullness about it and at times makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I had the same experience with the Russian Army Singers. What a wonderful voices!!!!!
@garyfernbay --- The Russian Army Chorus is FANTASTIC! I can never get enough of it. Do you have a DVD of "The Hunt for Red October?" The opening choir music gives me the chills every time I watch that film.
I just watched an interview with Dmitry on TV, there was a question about his hair, it's natural and he said he liked it. And also he said - at least i don't need to wear a wig!
Nice technique and a very beutiful voice, however I was surprised when I listened to him live by the fact that he has such a small voice. I would have imagined a powerful one, but anyway, it is great for studio recordings
Why must people make music that hurts other peoples ears? This is not pleasant to hear or watch. Its almost like a trainwreck its hard not to watch and listen to but it hurts so much and afterwards you feel really bad that you let yourself watch it.
I gotta say, I'm a big fan of Hvorostovsky, but I don't like this performance. I don't know what it is; either the enunciation or the vibrato just turns me off. Or maybe I just can't stop staring at his mullet. Who told him that was a good idea? "It's a mullet, yeah, but if it's SILVER it'll be DISTINGUISHED!"
Strange, since heavy vibrato is very russian what comes to classical singing. And I find it funny that people criticize someone's hair when he is a singer... :D
candidnt, if you *really* want to discuss a singer's hairstyle, so be it. It's not a mullet. Mullet is a style of the 80's, short in the *top* and *sides*, and I hate it. *This* is called *long hair*. And, if you're asking me, he looks more cute with it than with the cooler short hair :-)
I think it's a little better in the long run to learn the Cyrillic alphabet and look over the lyrics in Russian (at least, that's what I did because I was having difficulty finding lyrics and I too really wanted to learn some of these songs, particularly Последний бой), but here's the transliteration:
Ochi chyornye, ochi plamenny I monyat oni v strany dal'nye Gde tsarit lyubov', gde tsarit pokoi Gde stradan'ya nyet, gde vrazhdy zapryet Chorus {He omits it here} Ne vstrechal by vas, ne stradal by tak Ya by prozhil zhizn' ulybayuchis' Vy zgubili menya ochi chyornye Unesli na vek moyo schast'ye Chorus {He omits again} Vy zgubili menya ochi chyornye Unesli na vek moyo schast'ye
This was the favourite song of my father-in-law, general during the second world war, I will always remember him taking the aperativo with me before lunch listening to this song and many others, mostly Naepoletan... Viva Napoli...

May be you don't know - this is not Russian song. It is Gypsy romance and this quite specific manner allows quite big freedom, and Hvorostovsky is really great in this piece of music.
Someone was making fun of his hair? I think it's quite beautiful.
