Since you play the role of the lead character its classified as an RPG. But then that would make mario and sonic and donkey kong Rpgs too wouldn't it?

I think we have games that has what the players accept as an rpg but what the creators intended as not an rpg and vice versa.

I believe the creators intended this game to be an rpg. To the players point of view with the lack of an in-depth story (it has a story just not a real deep one) and epic adventure doesn't make it an acceptable rpg.

Yeah same here. After that boss, I just wanted the rest of the bosses to be a re-hash of that one. Then I fought the 14th Colossus, and I felt so much urgency as it chased me across the stage.

@Romalian have to agree here, I wouldn't classify shadow of the colossus as an RPG, because to me an RPG needs to have strategic thinking, numbers as Romalian said, and customization, all of which shadow of the colossus doesn't have. I'd classify it as more of an action game, or adventure game. Also, don't get me wrong, this is an amazing song, i just think that it shouldn't be on a list of 100 top RPG battle themes, since it makes less room for actual RPG battle themes that deserve to be here

RPG stands for Role playing game, with that definition in mind how does this game not qualify? Its a pointless debate either way to be perfectly honest, its a game driven by its story, which is what any rpg is in the end, you don't need 1000 weapon upgrades to make it one. Anyway its a great game, and the song is good.

It's not a rpg. It's just an action-adventure game. RPG's are more about creating a character and choosing whether to be good or bad. In this game you just follow the story.

90% of RPGs produced fall under the tale of you just following the story. Very few are games where you choose wether you are good or bad. If we follow that as the criteria for what an rpg is(by that I mean a game that is more about the story[implied or otherwise] then this falls under that. However if we define an rpg as a game where you choose your destiny, then well, very few "rpgs" actually qualify.

Just about every rpg in playstation and playstation 2 generation had a fixed story with almost no altering that your character could do. And most of them you couldn't create a character. MMORPGs where one of the first game genres that started this gameplay and I hope most PS3 generation games will catch on because thats how rpgs should be.

i think creating chars is awesome, but 50% of an RPG's Succes is it's story (MMORPG are only fun when you have lots of friend to play along) and pre-made chars have a incredible charisma to play their role on the story, making it better and more interesting.

He does have a progression, each colossus he kills he changes physically as each piece of Dormin goes inside him. Its all a lead up to the ending of the story, So personally I would call that character progression, its just not very obvious because there is no huge story presented to you.

Ill agree this lacks several of the obvious cliches of rpgs, but this IS an adventure rpg. This game has you role playing as the main character more than almost any game Ive ever played. No other adventure game has you, so directly, looking out of the eyes of your character. I think it was thei intent to make you feel almost like you were him, which would be the very point of role playing. There is no black and white with video games, so you shouldnt speak as if there are.

You can even capture lizards and fruits to gain stat boosts too!

An RPG doesn't require villages and tons of NPCs to talk to.

He does progress, each time he kills a colossus he slowly gets taken over by Dormin, he changes throughout becoming more sick looking and drained. HE DID make a choice, he chose to do as Dormin asked even though he was warned that something bad may happen.

But for the record, the easiest way to tell if a game is an RPG is seeing what of the classic RPG elements it has, like stores, levels, dungeons, turns, equipment, etc.
