did you ever fix it? Mines is the same way but when the blank screen comes up it has the bleeping underscore and not its usual "start windows in 30 secs" screen.
Then remove the cooler cover.(hint one screw is under the black tape and one is on the side. Clean thoroughly and reassemble. Your problem is solved. If you are in the Saint Louis area you can bring it to me and I will do it for $30. It won't take long and you are welcome to wait on it.

Crap thermal pad used between the video chip and copper heatsink by HP. This produces extra excessive heat causing damage or video chip separation from the motherboard. Reflow the chip, use Artic Silver thermal compound and a copper shim, mod the temp control on fan, drill out 4 vent holes in bottom casing FIXED!
this is because you let it over heat so the components fail you need another motherboard , or take it with someone and tel him that the video card is failling

Just fixed thi problem with my DV6700..... I opened it up and used a hairdryer to heat up the video card (covered up all the other parts with foil) then i put it back together... it still didnt work so i took out the first RAM card and it works fine now!!!!!!!! It may be lower but if you go out and buy a 2 gig stick of RAM youll be fine
I've got a junker laying around too. Exact same model. Exact same problem, only mine doesn't get to that bootup screen. It stays black screen. Mine was one month out of warranty. Motherboard overheated. I have since bought a Sony laptop ;) FU HP!

GET WINDOW 7 pro. i had a same problem overheating and turns off right away but after i download the window 7 pro it doesnt overheat anymore try it download it and install it you wont hear loud noise when the fans on. when i had vista the fan was so loud now its running smooth.

@drewc4 well setup is: vista ultimate 32 bits and now the hardware: 4 gb ram, 2.4 intel centrino duo t7700, nvidia 8400m gs card and so on! im very proud i have one from the old series! after my comp series, there were crap pavilions!
@drewc4 Same exact problem happened. Where you able to pull data off you old hard drive? Was it as simple as replacing the hard drive to get the problem fixed?
When I got it fixed, they told me the Hard Drive was messed and mine was due to over heating. I suggest you just go to a Computer repair store and get it fixed.
I think it looks like it could be a problem with the motherboard. If its still under warranty you could always send it back and they should replace it.

Yes another dv6700 issue! Mine has a faulty cd/dvd drive and faulty speakers due to over heating. I will never buy another HP product.

i tried repairin ma self...i juss removed 1GB ram...and nw its work g8
the problem was RAM...
