  • I agree, man, a true weightlifter does squats, deadlifts, bench presses, military presses, power cleans, etc, etc, any hard exercises. A true weightlifter also doesn't do his lifts in a smith machine, free weights are hard compared to smith, which actually stabalizes weight for you, therefore smith machine is easier.

  • You're right, but benchpressing can be hard too. Just make it as uncomfortable as possible. Go all the way down, not too fast and then up while not losing any tension on your chest. Do that with massive weights and you can add up another excercise nobody really does.

Squats are the heart of my workouts, I make sure to do at least one squat workout a week. And shit it is a hard workout. I'm gonna switch up soon and do more deadlifts then squats.

Hardly anyone squats, but you see a lot of people curling because that's what they think impresses the women, pure and simple. If they could, as you suggest, squat a lot, then it stands to reason that they would be squatting all the time, but as I pointed out, you'd be hard pressed to see anyone squatting at the gym, so your comment is bullshit.

  • I totally disagree with you, for me all the three excerisses. Benchpress, squat and deadlift is important. The reason i think that benchpress is the nr 1. Is in back and legs are big muscles you can become really strong with them in a short time of period. But the benchpress takes time, it often takes years to be able to lift heavy in the benchpress. So dont just diss it without propper reason. My personal favorites are benchpress and deep frontsquat so i am a little for the benchpress

  • I would disagree about the strongest muscle being the legs. Its probably the trapezius because its range of movement is so small and it is quite large.

  • + 1 you have a good point there i completly missed. As you say its true that traps are the strongest. I have seen people squat 264 pound and lift 440 pound in the barbell shrugs.

    But arent legs generally considered the strongest. Anyway you do have a very good point in what you say.

  • I can benchpress about 100 lbs more than I squat. Its because my leverage on squat is really bad (I have long thighs) and my leverage on benchpress is very good. If you consider the leverage advantage I have on benchpress I reckon my legs and hips are several times stronger than my upper body.

  • Allright but consider this if you were not limited by your thighs and you could load as mutch weight as you could possible squat then it would on contrary that you squat more than you benchpress? I allso have the same problem as you but its becuase my technique at squat sucks and of that reason i squat mutchs as i can benchpress.

  • I beg to differ. Squats are great, I've been doing them for years, but dead lifts are actually not very good for the lower back, no matter what your age is. Yeah, yeah, I know people do them, but it really doesn't work any specific body part except the lower back. There's more to the gym than bench press. How bout' shoulder presses, pull ups, dips, crunches, curls, shrugs, cardio??

  • DL (pulls), when done properly, actually work your whole posterior chain including hamstrings, glutes, and low back. If you do more "olympic style" then you're working a little more quads in. It's a holistic exercise that isn't meant to target any one muscle group, but it's a legendary test of strength. They aren't good for one's back when form is sloppy or is pushed too hard or if the TVA (inner abs) aren't flexed for stability; you flex your TVA when you sneeze.

  • Strongman stuff is harder than any of the lifting stuff if you ask me. I ran a mile the other day and wasn't even hardly breathing heavily, but I grab 220 lbs in each hand (440 lbs total) and walk 75 yards as fast as I can, I feel like I am about to die! LOL!

  • I do every exercise that you listed aside from snatches because they serve no purpose to me. Although I am a bench specialist, I am full powerlifter which means I squat and deadlift as well. But did you ever stop to think that it is tough to make your bench legitimately strong and that most people think that "parallel" is a half squat with 500 pounds. That pisses me off more than anything. When somebody says they can squat 550, but when you make them hit parallel, 365 crushes them.

  • Or if they do deadlift, they all "deadlift 405".  I hear so many people say they deadlift 405, but most of the time can't even hold onto 350 good and hitch/grind the weight up. When I first deadlifted 400 even, I could deadlift 350 X 3 without too many problems.

  • I do squats, but nobody does Deadlift becaus it destroys your whole back. It is clearly a very good exercises, you can't not do it in professional Bodybuilding, but you have to have a good amount of muscles to do deadlift without destroying your back.

  • squats, dead lifts, cleans, etc are rarely seen in the gym because they're athletic excercises. these lifts take a lot of work, which is why the average joe-who's just in the gym to get a little muscle so he can pick up chicks-won't do them. these lifts are great for sports, and also help build muscle, which is why most SERIOUS body builders do them. those who are just lifting to get a little bit bigger, who cares what they do, it's their bodies, and we all have our own motives and goals.
