I wished Johnny would have lived awhile longer in his lifetime, maybe he's in a mush better place among God and the angels of heaven. God Bless you Johnny Horton
Invaded in over 1000 years ....also the USA was concieved by Brits and the war of independance was an act of treason cooked up by a bunch of rich greedy babies that didnt want to pay taxes... But this song is great and springtime in alaska is even better
@imanidol yea and you have had help in the past 100 years to keep your island safe. and as for the greedy babies you guys over there arent any better, we was being taxed on everything, ie, tea tax, stamp tax, etc etc. stuff that was not being taxed over there. and we had no say in how we ran our local governments. so was it treason? yes. was it warranted? yes.
@imanidol and did you Brits get your asses kicked? Hell yea by a bunch of farmers! so good was your military? and lets be honest you still wouldnt stand a chance, more men, more tools of destruction, bigger faster strong airforce, the meanest baddest marines ever and the worlds largest Navy, which in fact is bigger then the next 16 navys combined, and the most brilliant field tacticians available, you wouldn't last a year against the US, but God I hope it never happens i have blood in the UK
@GoRdirty30jd You seem to be forgetting 1812. Your Regulars got wrecked by Canadian farmers, and Natives. This hypothetical war between the United Kingdom, and the United States is completely unrealistic. As for having the "baddest marines", that's simply not true. You're playing too many video games, and taking fiction for fact.
No. I mean Admiral Karl Doenitz (1891-1980). If you spell it "Donitz", you have to have the additional German accents over the "o" to give it the oe sound.
@mhatlie well....for the Americans it had just begun. Sure it may not be 100% accurate...it still tells a great story..so what if it doesnt mention the torpedoes that jammed the rudders. It's not like Johnny Horton could just Google the information..:)
No, for the Americans it hadn't begun yet. This was about half a year before Pearl Harbor. We were in a semi-hot submarine war with the Germans in the Atlantic, but we were not formally at war yet.
Johnny Horton didn't have google, but he had the public library. Indeed, back then many families still had encyclopedias in their homes.
@mhatlie This song is ment to entertain, not be 100% historically acurrate. It would be boring if all music was nothing but the history channel basically.
Right, but at some point, people can't tell entertainment from reality. Google the 2004 survey in Great Britain that showed that something like 11% of them believe Hitler was a fantasy, but almost 60% believe that King Arthur was real. People mix up fiction and history. By the way, I would say media like "The History Channel" while not all bad, are part of the problem, not part of the solution.
I first heard this in the 60's or 70's and I saw a commercial in the 90's about Johnny's Horton's songs. I saw that he also sings The Battle of New Orleans which I did not know that sung. I heard this one and before that commercial. My father likes this song and I thought the Bismark in World War II.
Have you ever really thought about what courage it took for men like those sailors, on both sides, knowing that there is no place to hide. Not that infantrymen have easy (I know -- 2years in combat). But those guys, like the men in the Civil War, marched (so to speak) straight into the mouth of hell, and NEVER flinched from their duty. Amazing -- even to me.
On the day the Bismark first set to sea he was the single largest, and most deadly Warship on the ocean. Between his extremely heavy armor, massive gun batteries, and brand new state of the art targeting systems there was nothing that could match him.
It was only the fact that the British Navy vastly outnumbered the German Navy, and a single lucky shot, that allowed the Brits to take this monster out.
As a quite amusing fact: The Bismarcks ultimate Achilles heel was its way too advanced targeting system. They simply didn't think the British would throw WWI-era Torpedo bombers at them, so the Anti Air guns couldn't properly adapt.
Agreed! But, by the way, any inanimate object ESPECIALLY SHIPS and MILITARY MACHINERY are female in English. Just for future reference to you if you ever right a paper or what not on the military
Its even not clear if the Bismark sunk itself. The Shells of the English ships couldn't pierce the armor of the Bismark, just the Torpedos did some damage.
because they didn't want the British get it. They British ships couldn't sink it and run out of Ammo. Expeditions showed that only a few of the shells could pierce the Bismack but no one was under the
waterline.
It was sunk by an explosion which was INSIDE of the ship.
@jimjan41 The Bismark was finally sunk by torpedos from a Destroyer. The Gemans did not have the time to scuttle her, many of the poor devils never got out and went down with the ship. Try watching the film it's fairly accurate and much of it from actual film footage at the time. Anyway my friend it was a long time ago and lets hope the like never happens again. Cheers James.
1) The Hood was broken in half after 1 volley from the Bismark's 16 inch guns. The battle lasted less than a minute.
2) A Swordfish Torpedo bomber off of the HMS Ark Royal damaged the rudder so that the Bismark was running in circles.
3) It took 4 full British Task Forces several hours of shelling to finally sink the Bismark, which was actually sunk by a torpedo fired from a Destroyer.
4) The US of A was not involved in this battle in any way shape or form. It was Brits Vs, Germans, period.
1) bismmark fired several volleys at HMS Hood and scored 3 hits but the fatel hit peirced here 3 inch deck armour and hit the poweder mag wich caused her to blow.
and from hoods first volley to the last volley fired at the prince of wales as she with drew was 18 minutes.
2) was correct
3)only 2 british fleets were involved in the final destruction force H and home fleet.
the shelling lasted 3 hours and it was a cruiser that fired 6 torpedos at bizmark.

Fought shoulder to shoulder with the British & Americans. Fourth largest navy in the world during that time (Battle of the Atlantic). D-Day - Juno Beach - best first day results.
Homeland defence of the UK (eg. Battle of Britain).
Participated in the invasion of western Europe & Italy.
UK held their own before America entered the war. The Bismark was torpedoed 9 times by swordfish torpedo bomber-bi planes. It also took 10 bomb hits I think. The Bismark was a heck of a ship and fought to the end but eventually blew up. The Prince of Wales was in the fight but its 4-barreled turrets malfunctioned but it still fought with its remaining turrets. The Bismark was a good ship and had some areas that were better than the British battleships.
First off, the Bismark was the most advanced battleship of its time, it only lost because its AA coverage was only tuned for fast flying planes not bi-planes, second " by holding their own" I hope you mean they were barely scraping by with the materials we were supplying them with, wow pick up a fucking history book.
they fought like HELL, perhaps even harder than we did, because their homeland was under DIRECT attack from a foreign power, something the US hasnt experienced in a LONG WHILE

Is this song historically accurate? I always thought Bismark was disabled by Torpedo dive bombers. Torpedo took out her rudder and left her unable to manouver. Ships then moved in to finish the job before the German crew could scuttle her. Either way, these brave men truely were the greatest generation. Lest we forget.
Kibbleball, that is accurate. A British "Swordfish" torpedo plane (I think off the "Ark Royal" carrier), hit the Bismarck's rudder, disabling it and allowing the ship to only go in circles.
The Swordfish torpedo planes were biplanes, with a top speed of barely 100 mph, and were so slow that the Bismarck's then-modern anti-aircraft guns could not accurately track them.
