It's maddening the way they keep the trains from going fast. You know there's no traffic up ahead and yet the dispatchers keep the signals yellow and red. When I was a kid I can remember flying by the stations so fast that you couldn't read the station signs.
when the R40 slants used to run on the a i used to take them to columbus circle and stand in between the cars all the way to 125th, it was FASTTTT lol
I rode on many A trains of R-10s along that stretch in the olden days; they could make the run in five minutes. By the time you reached 81st St., you were flying.
if you ever look though the hinges of the T/O's cab of a R32, you can see the speedometer. I was on a R32 a train on that section and was very disappointed to find that the fastest it went was 37 mph (most of the time is was going 31-33) and all the signals were green. But between 59th Street and 42nd street it went up to 47 mph, so my question is: why?
Maserati7200, I believe the main reason is because of the grade (slope of tracks) between these stations. 59th to 125th is an uphill grade, which forces the train to go slower. 59th to 42nd, however, is a steady downhill all the way.
It also has to do with what condition the tracks are in. If the tracks aren't smooth and mostly straight, the train is generally supposed to move slower.
There was onced a "C" train, 8th Avenue Bronx Concourse Express, running this same route years ago. the "A" train and the "C" train onced coexisted as an 8th Avenue Express during the depression years. Remember the local trains, the 8th ave Local, "AA", "CC", and 6th ave "BB" trains.
I actually like the D train via Central Park West....I perfer to take the D train late nights cause the A is running local and I don't have to worry about another train infront of the D so its a smooth ride!

The R-10's are better than those boring 75fters they got on the A now. I'm glad I got a chance to ride the Arnines (R-1/R-9)!

How did you know that a D train was ahead of you? was an announcement made?

nice video of doing an express run on the R38 A Train.
It's not an R42 A Train because it only ran in August of 2007 and it started to run on the A Again in 2008 thru January 2009
ELD64 2 years ago
Thank you and its a R-42 A....it was not a R-38. R-42's made an appearence on A during the summer of 2007 and I got pics to back it up!!

Was this an R32 or R38?
Mtafreak 3 years ago
IIRC I think it was a either R-38 and R-42!
JamaicaQnzFreak 3 years ago
Its suppose to bump like that when swtiching tracks and it was going slow due to a D train infront and tracks workers on the opposite side!
JamaicaQnzFreak 3 years ago
Why is it going go slow? It used to rip through there at 50 mph. Now that was fun!

Construction on the Uptown local track and D train in front!
