When people stop raping our oceans of whales, sharks and fish someone can talk to me about how its wrong to keep them in this aquarium. Until then, for some of these species its one of the only ways to keep them from becoming extinct.
Why is it that people never talk about the rescue work facilities like the Georgia aquarium perform? Did you know that all the sea turtles in their tanks are rescues and will be trained to be released back into the wild. The coral in their reef tank is aquacultured, meaning it was grown in captivity rather then collected in the wild. Countless animals have been brought back from the brink of extinction by the hard work or people at places like this. Think about this before posting about cruelty.
@arinkromas Unfortunately your attitude is shared by many, don't get me wrong I understand where your coming from. I feel like you, and many like you, are failing to see the big picture. All you see is four whale sharks in a tank. What you don't see is that it's four well feed whale sharks in a 6.3 million gallon tank that is completely safe. They are swimming in cleaner water then any ocean in the world that has been run through the most advanced filtration on the planet.
@Purevil24 I totally agree. Well sized and maintained modern aquariums have the longest living creatures because the animals have it better than in our current polluted water environments.
@arinkromas And surround wild animals with boats, divers, threats, more pollution, noise etc? It's the lesser of all evils to have 4 of the Whale Sharks in this aquarium. I'd rather have this then lose all of the worlds big marine animals.
It doesn't look natural to me. In nature, there would never be such a dense crowding of fish. It looks great, but maybe a few more larger or more exotic species, or perhaps many more tiny ones and a few big ones. And by tiny I mean maybe sardine or shrimp size.
They don't put fish in that eat each other naturally. Wish they would have done a zoom out view. All I see is water and fish. I want to see the huge tank!
@kingpolaris They feed the fish regularly, so the predators usually don't have the need to hunt.. They're just waiting for their food. Although, one time I was there a shark ripped into a smaller fish. The entire crowd was horrified - haha! But all the other times I've been there, the sharks are as calm as can be.
@Vanbagle Actually, the larger the aquarium, the easier to maintain! It takes longer for harmful chemicals such as ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite to build up as it would in a smaller tank.
thank goodness we have the technology to create something so wonderful, because after we humans trash the oceans this will be the only way all these spectacular species will be able to survive, I feel so sad for them...locked up, what a way to live, good ole humans, leave it to us.
I was just there yesterday. I am happy to share this video with family members back home on Skype, it shows very nicely the size of the tank and viewing area, with a great opening shot to capture your attention, unlike some others that build 5 minutes of boring video and loosing your audience before getting a glimse of the immensity of this tank.
really guys? its OVERSTOCKED? go fuck urself! its 6.3 million gallons...u guys realize its one inch for every gallon of water....u really think theres 6.3 million inches of fish? fuck off guys they r experts...they realize these things and give em the best food and temperature and living conditions...grow up guys there is no animal cruelty here...if anythin.. they r doin them a favor for not lettin die in the oceans all u assholes r polluting..
@heartgravity well you can make it a screensaver if you download the video and use dreamscene activator. you may have to convert the video to wmv using windows movie maker. cuz dreamscene only recognizes wmvs and mpgs
when I went there, and walked into the large viewing room, a huge group of these small stingrays shot up against the glass and everyone gasped in fascination :D
Dude get a bigger tank... ;-D, all kidding aside, are your whale sharks as curious as they are in the wild. When your divers goes into the tank do they come up to them to check them out. Must be amazing to see 2 whale sharks swimming side by side each other, bet they never see that in the wild.
The "glass" is actually multiple layers of acrylic (each - one inch thick) laminated together with a secret process (Japan installed it). Total thickness is about 2 feet thick!
@xxCrazy101xx You can't compare primates such as ourselves to 15 ton cetaceans. Im hardly being hypocritical. These animals live different lives than human beings. Let us all think logically; shall we?
@Feroal2 just to clarify, a whale shark is not a cetacean it is a chondrichthys, a class of fish; but ya they haven't been kept in captivity with very much success, so while it is awesome the public has such easy access to viewing these animals, i can say first hand that it's more amazing to see them in their natural environment
