I find Joan's high "cantiamo" phrases simply ethereal. In this version she shows a very wide palette of tonal colours, and an accute sense of the aria's interpretive demands. Brava, Joan!
I agree with your comments on this recording. Only Tebaldi and perhaps Margaret Price, for me, are comparable to Sutherland in the depth and nuance of interpretation she demonstrates here. Sutherland's Desdemona was legendary, it's a pity she didn't sing the role often. Sutherland seemed to understand the right mood and colour for every word and repeated verse. And all of this is done subtly, through the music. No need for sobs and all those histrionic effects.
