I'm not a fan of her acting here. She smiles too often, as if she's forgotten the cursed portion of her character. It doesn't work for me. I'm also not a fan of the corps in soft shoes.
@MarkPanzarino I agree with the corps in flat shoes, but I think they are younger dancers from the school. As for the smiling, if you really look closely, it isn't a happy smile. It's a tragic, bittersweet kind of smile. She's cherishing those few moments with the Prince before she returns into her swan form, and Marianela perfectly portrays that.
@MakeCupcakesNotLove That would be fair...but they're performing in the Opera House. Not everybody's getting "a real close look". And this is Act 1, where that would be out-of-character. It's just not for me.
@kkiimmiissiipp No, a dancer can move perfectly well and be a terrible actor. I'm not saying Marianela is a terrible actor, but I don't like her style.
@kkiimmiissiipp you wrote ``cannot´´ and ``say´´ in the same sentence, something I never said to you, so get off your high horse, I'm not the one who isn't open minded here.
I love Nunez and Soares in this, he's not my favourite Sigfried but I adore her as Odette. She seems so sad, like she's hoping Sigfried will help her but she's scared to believe that.
From the moment I saw her my tears were endlessly running down cheeks. That was absolutely breathtaking. Never again will I see someone, like her, show how passionate she is about dancing. She danced with her whole heart. Isn't that what ballet supposed to be?
@TwilightIsBest1234 I'm pretty sure it's because their children from the school. They look very, very young. There may well be guidelines regarding the ages of children allowed on pointe (too young and their bones can be damaged).
@TwilightIsBest1234 they use children from the royal ballet school in the corps.....apparently it's what the russians used in the original swan lake and when this production was created they wanted to use as many original 'things' as possible in it
I always feel really bad for the background dancers because they work a lot too but the audience doesn't usually notice them, they are almost like props on the stage :(
This is frozen perfection. M. Nunez is really incredible in "Bella Durmiente" and also as Odile, but her dancing as Odette is so "affected" and slow it seems just boring to me.
The best Odette/Odile I have ever seen is undoubtedly Lorna Feijoo, who has astounding technique, unparalleled musicality, and at the same time she's so expressive and lyrical.
Like many people, I love Lopatkina in this role, but Lorna Feijoo's interpretation is even more accomplished and exciting.
@lopatkina I have to agree with you on Nunez seeming a little too slow.
But personally, I adore Gillian Murphy and Svetlana Zakharova as Odette. I know how cliche that is, but they both dance such sincere, pure, frantic Odettes - I think Nunez is missing that sense of urgency. That fear but also that need for Siegfried to break her curse.
I was enthralled...up until the corps started dancing. The Royal could afford to learn a thing or two from other big companies like POB and Mariinsky about uniformity of movement.
marianela is remarkable. you cant tear your eyes away from her. everytime i watch this i'm reminded of why i adore ballet! her technique is so pure and her acting cannot be called "acting" because its so real. the more i watch this, the more intense my crying gets every time!! i especially love the moments she just looks into thiago's eyes. SIGH. all i ask in my lifetime, is to have the opportunity to see her dance live. DIVINE
Stupenda! I find myself holding my breath through Marianela's performance - it's just so outstanding and emotional! I would give everything to dance like that.
Marianela is gorgeous and Thiago's partnering is immaculate. My only problem is the corp, it seems overly large for this production and there are changes which are more distracting than pleasing to the eye. I find myself watching them more because of heir twitching and slight movements, rather than the principal dancers. You think someone at the Royal ballet would have noticed how excessive the corps de ballet seem and taken a few out! Choreographically, this version is very weak...
This pas de deux only works for me if Odette seems more swanlike than human. Nunez's Odette does, with an astonishing fluidity in her upper body. A more sensuous and less ethereal interpretation than I'm used to but that's a difference, NOT a fault.
Maravilhosos!Marianela danca o Lago dos Cisnes lindamente e Thiago e um excelente partner, apesar de nao ter tanto virtuosismo quanto ela.Parabens a esse extraordinario casal de bailarinos!
It's the best Odette I've ever seen. Marianela Nunez is perfect, as always. Only dresses of the corps look little weird for me, they don't resemble swans, at all.
This is the first time I have seen this role danced by someone whose acting is so refined and sincere you forget entirely about her technique. Her dancing totally serves the part. I am amazed. And her black swan is PERFECT. She truly does the dual role to perfection.
marianela is always LIVING in each role, so much so that i'm always completely overwhelmed and can hardly contain myself sitting here. i can't imagine what it would be like to see her live...i would probably explode, lol. her mannerisms in this are very reminiscent of gillian murphy for me, another one of my favorite swans, but marianela undoubtedly has a more defined line. i would give just about anything to see her live.
It is so refreshing to see a Odette who actually seems to care about the prince and the story of swan lake, rather than just relying on her line to get through it. Wonderful!!
Sometimes the Royal Ballet has some costumes that looks like in the wrong ballet.I wonder, why the swans of the corps du ballet are dress like willis from the ABT?Why the prince is dress like the prince of Maryeling? and what is to be said about Marianela´s tutu? I will say nothing because I love her too much
i had the same feeling when I first saw photos of the production; but when I saw it live, the long tutus made the big swans really fly; it somehow fits with the movements...
