Awesome! Your friend Thang just referred me to your channel, and wow. I like it very much. This is great playing. Pretty powerful too at times. Nice.
Best rendition of this piece I have heard on youtube, both musically and technically. And you don't play it like you're trying to play it as fast as you can which is what happens a lot with this piece. Well done.
you don't need to write "AMATEUR pianist Ricker Choi performs....ecc".. ;)
in this piece u shoul be judged with the same parameters with we normally judged a Professional pianist. Sometimes the line that divides professional and amateur musician is not so evident..this is the case ;) good technique, and originality of interpretation :) (in you, i would "dare" a little bit more )
o hey I posted a more recent rendition of this same piece. If you search for my name you can find it. I hope this newer version, 3 years later, is better and more 'daring'.
What do you practise, tecnique-wise, to get that explosive power in your fingertips? I know it would take countless hours, over years... but I'm a pianist myself and I WANT that lol.
hey sorry i was away from vacation... thanks for your comment regarding 'explosive power' haha... first time heard this description about my playing. thanks! the 'explosive power' doesn't just come from finger tips - it comes from your arm, support from body core, and back muscles. u working with a teacher?
Yeah i do, but she doesnt crack down on technical skills as much as she should... and i need a scarier teacher, i think, lol im not very disciplined. She just loves me because i improvise and doesnt harp on my weaknesses.
Support from your core and back muscles? Ive never really approached it that way - could you elaborate?
I have score for this piece in PDF format, But this looks extremely difficult. Mr.Choi probably practiced for many hours and days to learn this piece. Thanks for posting this vid..
Any Pianist who can play this work deserves honor and accolade. We can argue menutiae and we do. But playing this work musically is an astonishing achievement.
I have to say for an Amateur this is more than excelent. And to think all the other people call them selfes Musicians or pros, thou they are zero in tallent, brain and soul.
To be fair, I must say the beginning was too fragmented. If I have the chance to re-record it, I will play it more 'flowing'. But I still like the middle section when it slowed down a bit and accelerated.
You *really* don't know what you're talking about. I know it's not about speed - where did I say it was? Listen to her Chopin Op 10 No 3, or Op 10 No 6, or Op 25 No 6 and then tell me her interpretations are weak in slow music. Though maybe you ought to go away and find out what "interpretation" means first.
Now, now, no need to resort to name-calling, though I suppose I ought to sympathise, since your tin ears are obviously giving you pain. I have listened, and what's more I actually know what I'm talking about.
I've just visited your YouTube profile, where it says you'r a 19 year old classical pianist. I detect a strong hint of jealousy, which is not surprising given Lisitsa's superlative technique and flawless muscianship. Can't wait to hear your version!
Why would I be jelaous of someone who, all the time, gives more emphasis on technique rather than music? You don't know who I am or what I do or how I play or where I study or who I study with.. so you can't really judge me. I'm allowed to not like something.. get over it, all of you. Not everything has to be insanely fast - sometimes that carries a price.
Hey Ricker, it's Dylan from the Toronto Music Academy! (Don't know if you remember me) I'm currently working on this piece along with a couple other of Rach's etudes. Great piece and nice work!
o Rach 2 - yes! you are from the West right? of course i remember you hehe. no this year I am not going to either, but instead i may go to a small 3 day one in WestBen - just I can't take full week off in July this year. what about u?
I'm going to Orford instead this year to study with Jean Saulnier and John Perry. I may still apply to TSMAF though... I think they extended the deadline to the 30th of april!! They must need the students.
Dude it's not a bad version, it says in the description that he's an amateur, and it's still pretty good considering the piece he is playing, Valentina Lisitsa is like possessed or something <_<;
actaully it was a hard decision to pick my tempo. most performances i hear are at breakneck speed. i chose to do it slower, with a bit more give-and-take... not sure if it works
You *really* don't know what you're talking about. This is a fine *amateur* version, but Lisitsa's makes a thousand times more sense mucially and emotionally. Why not keep quiet - that way people will only think you're an idiot, as opposed to you opening your mouth and proving it.

You're an idiot
Lisitsa is a bad musician. Great technique, but empty and shallow. You need to listen.

I tend to have some agreement with you in general. But on this particular piece she certainly delivers something worth listening to.

A great feeling of 'where-to-slow-down-syncopa-forte-stuff-like-that'. A very touching perfomance! 5/5! =)

Well, I think it's marvelous.
This is an extremely difficult etude, and you play it very well.
Speed is not the only thing that makes this etude enjoyable. You play with great suspense.

I don't know rach's music so well, but comparing to Listisa's version it's much better! There's a say, a feeling in the music (not only speed).
I love it!

Hey Dylan - nice hearing from you . Did you play Ravel's Alborada Del Gracioso? Mind reminding me?

That was Elliot. I played the Rach 2 (poorly) haha. Are you going back this year? or to Orford?
