Thumbs up if you really really really want to know the title of Lucky Date's song that plays throughout the video. Let's tell Propellerhead how bad we want it!
@ViniTheFuture It's not a song of his, actually. It's just something he made for this vid for us. It's based off one of his tutorials he created called "how to make a progressive house synth" or something like that.
Haha. I knew this track was familiar. It's from Lucky Date's "Create a progressive house synth" tutorial in case you were wondering! He probably finished up the track. =]
Can't wait until I get some more money to buy Reason 6! It looks absolutely amazing.
@PropellerheadSW I would love to hear from R&B/Hip-Hop and maybe some Inspirational [Gospel/Praise & Worship] producers and artists that use Reason. Those are the categories that I work in, so I want to see if there's anyone already using it.
@jctunes For hip hop, we've got plenty of artists features to check out - Hank Shocklee, Adrock, DJ Toomp, or our Reason Beats compilation teaser, and more. For R&B check out our Chaka Blackmon video, Jeremy Ellis' demo at the NAMM show a few years ago. Everything's on our channel and searchable but youtube doesn't let me post direct links for you.
@PropellerheadSW Did you not forget DJ Khalil??? He uses Reason for his production. Credits, Jay Z, Clipse, The Game, EMINEM, Talib Kweli? You guys, tighten your game...know your famous users!
@pitolove71 You're totally right. I didn't really forget him... except I kinda did when I posted that comment. We love Khalil and if the guy weren't so darn successful and busy... I'd be up in his studio interviewing the crap out of him! I'd love to do that. :)
@PropellerheadSW Aaaw man! That would be soooo awesome if you'd interview with him. I'm pretty sure you guys can make it happen. I'll await the awesome interview! Thanks for reply.
@jctunes DJ Khalil produced: Jay Z, Eminem, The Game, Clipse "Kind of Like a Big Deal" which was super hot. Eminem's Recovery album, he did four tracks, in reason. YT him you'll see him talking bout how he does his production...
I really feel that @PropellerheadSW should interview J.Cole on his use of Reason as well as other Hip-Hop/R&B producers...Would really like to get more insight on what they do with the program/sound....I think revisiting DJ Khalil after his current success would be great as well...What do you think?
Yo :) Search any of my tunes Propellerheads. They are all reason. No plugins or vst's in all 40 plus remixes and own singles. Im still in platform 3, so no Thor, but Reason 6 is something I will buy for sure :)
@Roussos93 That's true! Niles is a great super nice guy. And of course we're super proud that Like a G6 and everything else they do is made in Reason. :)
@PropellerheadSW please do so, and ask him what are his favorite refills. his story is truly inspirational...he literally went from making music in a loft to #1 on the billboards.
@skyrepsol When I filmed with him, he had just gotten back from a bunch of gigs and he was super cool and nice to film with me even though he was probably crazy tired. As for favorite ReFills, I can already sorta answer that for you. Dj Lucky Date makes electro refills and I know Niles uses them. Niles and Jordan (Lucky Date) went to high school together too so they know each other from way back. Jordan's ReFills are really good!
I love Reason and I've used it since 1.0 back in late 2000. I also love Record, and if you just added MIDI OUT I would be able to completely ignore my regular DAW product and never, ever look back. (I don't use VSTs, obviously.)
Been using Reason since 2002. Never saw the need for any type of plugins. Take some engineering classes or read a book on techniques if you want to get that certain sound. Reason is perfect the was it is. Doesn't need a bunch of plugins causing instability.
u made a good point, it seems most of the people that buy software want master/mix ready sound banks which isnt possible, dont want to put any effort into doing anywork for them selves
I wonder why this video, promoting a software made in Europe, had to be filmed and shows mainly americans.
I could puke seeing this.
Why the heck has everything in this stupid world to be related to america which is nothing but theft, war, aggression, occupation and what ever else negative.
Cant we Europeans not just being proud of doing stuff without america?
Is a thing, what ever it is only good if it has a label sporting "this is new, this is from america"?
@humanalive How about "Probably because Propellerheads sells many more boxes to Americans that to Europeans?". That would also explain the mass of American-oriented official refills, like "Soul School", etc.
Also, it's not really true that America is "nothing but theft, war, aggression, occupation and what ever else negative". Well, their government, maybe, but America is a lot of other things besides, from Robert Moog and Detroit Techno, to Henry Miller and Charles Mingus...
I Love Reason..Best DAW for producing beats, not for editting though..but thats not what it was intented and created for to do..And for the ppl bullshitting about the audio quality..i'm sorry for you but you just suck..Reason doesn't ..I'm a certified sound engineer and once i finish the track and got it mastered.. i garantee you i'll blow away any of your mixes..it'll sound just like a proffesional record.. Im not here to challenge anyone...just saying ..Reason is amazing & pro too..Don't hate
i use reason to make everyone of my tracks, its an epic program! the way you are able to edit any of the synths to perfect a sound you want, is one of the main reasons i use it, i fucking love it!
I remember almost a decade ago when Reason was cool, especially because I didn't have money to buy instruments, but after a using actual machines nothing compares. It's still insanely great software nevertheless.

Reason is good for getting started with audio production, but for a professional level mix, it doesn't cut it. Reason compresses sound. The output sound is never the same as what you put in. After switching from Reason to Cubase 5 years ago, our sound got progressively better and more professional. If you are looking to get into audio production, Reason is great, if you want professional mixes, Cubase, Logic or Protools are the answer.
@viceversaDNB I've heard some amazing hit records produced using Reason and I've heard some horrible songs produced using Reason so it really gets down to sound selection and the user not the program....what you put in is what you get out
@TWMusicBerlin Two of our tracks released on Good Looking Records in 2004 were done with Reason. To be fair, they sounded a lot better when they got mastered and pressed to vinyl than they did right out of the program. For a while we were bouncing from Reason and mixing in Cubase but we just switched in the end and the sound quality was exponentially better. I'll check the latest version, but from my experience, just on a purely sonic level, it is a very low fidelity software.
@viceversaDNB Not sure what you mean, exactly. Reason doesn't compress the sound. Import a test tone, export it from Reason, and load them up in another audio program... the waveforms will be identical. Reason makes no change to the sound beyond the changes it's supposed to make when you adjust EQ, add effects, mixer automation, etc.
@PropellerheadSW I'm not trying to start an argument. You would surely be biased in this discussion so there is little point. I like Reason, the speed at which you can slam out ideas is a definite plus, but there is a reason (no pun intended) that many professional studios/producers choose Cubase or Logic. To them, Reason is regarded a bit like a toy, and many people agree the sound is just simply not up to par with what you get from the other two.
@viceversaDNB yea i might believe you... if lucky date's productions weren't so great. and claude vonstroke. even kill the noise's productions sound incredibly well mastered (even tho im not that crazy bout some of his productions)
the sound is fine. you just need to figure out how to tweak them to ur liking. personally ive been able to make everything from FAT basslines and lead synths (like the lead in afrojack's Replica) to gameboy sounds. it took awhile, but Reason can definitly do it
@PropellerheadSW Back in the day the compression well actually in Reason 4 before the heavy input mixer in Reason 5. There would be a lot of compression towards the audio signal, I couldn't use it for gaining support on my audio engineering degree. In reason 5 you fixed that issue. It's a weird side effect when mastering tracks. Though I had the same issue, but reason is great for it's synths , and learning where the signal goes not so much for editing. Pardon my french but it's a bitch to edit.
@PropellerheadSW I'm about to ask an obvious question. I'm going to ask YOU, because hopefully YOU will answer it, and that answer will stay up for the lifetime of this video. WHAT IS THAT INSTRUMENT AT 0:16? I think at least of this video's viewership now wants one.
@Niggs3000 Sure. That's called a ZenDrum. It's a percussion MIDI controller that uses wireless MIDI so you can dance around on stage with it. It's a pretty sick piece of kit, right? I want one too now. :)
Respond to this video... What do i do if i have 2 Keys with Reason 5 and Record 1.5 and need Reason 6 to work on both ? do i have to buy the upgrade twice I hope not that sucks ..
@viceversaDNB That was the case years ago perhaps because yes the audio out did get really quiet but Record's SSL has honestly fixed that issue. I am getting better mixes in R/R (soon to be Reason 6) than I did in Sonar, Cubase, Acid or Pro Tools
@viceversaDNB This is laughable. Cubase, Logic and PT are *DAWS*, Reason is not, it is a music synthesis software. It works *in conjunction* with Pro Tools, Logic or Cubase via rewire sync. Therefore, your argument is completely moot. You really should educate yourself before making such bold, unfounded statements
@SamAndrew27 "Music synthesis" software is a non existing category. Except if you mean something like CSound. Since version 6 that incorporates digital audio recording, Reason is a lightweight DAW (lightweight as in no plugins, fewer audio editing features, etc), but a DAW nonetheless.
@foljs Music synthesis software is a non-existing category!? So let me get this straight, Fruity Loops, Absynth, Massive, Albino, Reaktor, REASON and all those other standalone and/or plug-in SOFTWARE SYNTHS don't have their own category?? Haha, LOL, cool story brah!!
@SamAndrew27 """Music synthesis software is a non-existing category!? So let me get this straight, Fruity Loops, Absynth, Massive, Albino, Reaktor, REASON and all those other standalone and/or plug-in SOFTWARE SYNTHS don't have their own category??"""
They have their category, alright. It's called (drum roll) "Software Synths". You even managed to MENTION IT by name, LOL. Reason is not a soft synth, though, it's a DAW that INCLUDES several soft synths plus 2 samplers, a sequencer etc.
@SamAndrew27 You say it's laughable then go on to say that Reason is not designed to be used in the same fashion as DAWS? You do realize you proved my point with your answer correct?
@viceversaDNB Negative. I didn't say that Reason is "not designed to be used in the same fashion as DAWS." I just said that Reason is not a DAW...apparently 6 will be though, which I'm not sure about. My point was just that it doesn't do what Pro Tools or Logic does (even though it works along side them). Guess I was harsh to call what you said "laughable," but you were kinda trollin. Anyhow, I am biased towards Reason, I think it's the best music software out there.
@viceversaDNB you can use reason and cubase duh..its two completely seperate programs..its all opinion. theres hits on the radio made with reason. if you cant get a good mix thats your fault
Damn, when I see a new Propellerhead video I want to run immediately in the studio and make some music. Those people starring were so inspiring, it kinda makes me go buy some portable audio recorder, and start travelling around the world for new samples.
@neshtapov The song Is made by a reason artist named "lucky date". I don't know what its called, but u can hear it on one of his tutorial videos and he even tells u how to make the sound :)
@TWMusicBerlin still though theres something that takes 3 times longer to do in reason than it takes in ableton. ableton just works better with my workflow, i get a lot done in notime.
@TWMusicBerlin like if i want to sidechain a compressor with a drum track as my input and a synth, i have to do a lot more than just drag and drop in ableton
So i cant help to wonder... so i already have reason record and i like the price of the downloadable upgrade. the things is, does mean i have to pay $400 extra just to get balance????
Nice advertising, but im a presonus studio one user and I LOVE IT hehe, all I ever use reason for is for redrum rewiring it to my DAW, vst's give you so much more creative freedom no matter what this cute videos try to convince you otherwise to keep using reason and nothing else.
I am so looking forward to Reason 6! Could anyone help me out with something? When I rewire Reason 5 into Cubase 5, I'm having a bit of an issue with playback. Say I've got eight measures in Reason, and I want to record something over it in Cubase via the rewire. When I press play or record on either program's transport, Reason starts playing just before Cubase! As you can imagine, the timing gets totally off. I haven't been using rewire because of this... Any help?
@TheSoundCenter Yes, switch to Presonus Studio One and ditch that piece of crap called Cubase, I did after 7 years of using it and I've never been so happy and productive.
I am a Reason user. Hello from Australia. I started on ProTools. Tried wrapped VSTs and RTAS plugins, never questioned why it took minutes to load my four track song. And then something wonderful happened. I bought Reason/Record. Best investment in my lifestyle I have ever made. I haven't fired up ProTools in six months. If you want to learn then Youtube is your friend. Learn. Share. Create. Repeat.
And I haven't thought about a VST for a long, long time.
CALLING ALL REASON USERS! I'm a beginner producer and have been using logic, but I'm not a big fan of it... Its UI is complex and inefficient in my opinion, and it simply doesn't allow me to turn my ideas into music very often...
Basically, I want you guys to explain why I should ditch logic and, consequently, my beloved Massive and Sylenth, for Reason.
Also, I'd like you guys's opinion on if it's good for all electronic music. (Trance, Electro, Dubstep, Disco, Hardcore, whatever)
@ElectronicAether I started on reason. Reason IS a great productive tool, you can easily and efficiently get your ideas laid down. Its great for experimenting and just being creative full stop and overall its a really quick process. However, I dont particularly like the synths or mastering within reason, so once my ideas are laid down I tend to transfer into ableton live to enhance the synths and pre-produce. I wouldnt advise using reason alone, massive and sylenth are superior sounding imo :-)
@ElectronicAether dont ditch logic , im sure you know of rewire, massive is amazing, but so is thor.....its not what you have its how you use it....once you get a good grip on reasons kong laying out your drum grooves is Maaaddd, as a producer your originality comes out using reason because it allows you to manipulate sounds with ease, and they are your sounds that you create, who no one else has ,
@ElectronicAether Logic isn´t complex. You just don´t know how to use it. I would advise you to learn Logic, Live and Reason (and Pro Tools and Cubase and...) Each one has it´s advantages over all the others, each one shines in something.
You won´t regret it.
Seems that it´s still very early on your production career. The best DAW is the one you like more, but don´t fall in the terrible mistake of discarting DAWs because you don´g know how to use them correctly.
Hey ITS THE CATARACS! but really i think someone already said could you guys link me to some of the other people on this vid? im just interested in what theyve manipulated reason into. pls?
@tmike1919 LMAO man i use CUBASE and reason with Rewire and i can still use VST and the GREAT reason synths and samplers and every thing , try to be normal guys !
I am a Reason user, and part of being a Reason user is turning the limitations of the software into positive creativity instead of complaining about every little thing it CAN'T do.
@TWMusicBerlin and your wasting your time posting totally non relevant responses to a question.
why bother typing so much if you know so little about DAW software?
"omg ableton looks so ugly and complicated :O"
yeah see iv used both and understand both which is why I can tell you Reason is a kids toy, you havnt used ableton so how can you possibly pose any form of comparason?
I am a reason user :D

Also, I'm not a MAC user.

@viceversaDNB what a load of horse dung.
NewgroundsOwnSBB 6 months ago
@viceversaDNB That was the case years ago perhaps because yes the audio out did get really quiet but Record's SSL has honestly fixed that issue. I am getting better mixes in R/R (soon to be Reason 6) than I did in Sonar, Cubase, Acid or Pro Tools
DJKevWest 6 months ago
@viceversaDNB This is laughable. Cubase, Logic and PT are *DAWS*, Reason is not, it is a music synthesis software. It works *in conjunction* with Pro Tools, Logic or Cubase via rewire sync. Therefore, your argument is completely moot. You really should educate yourself before making such bold, unfounded statements
SamAndrew27 6 months ago
@SamAndrew27 "Music synthesis" software is a non existing category. Except if you mean something like CSound. Since version 6 that incorporates digital audio recording, Reason is a lightweight DAW (lightweight as in no plugins, fewer audio editing features, etc), but a DAW nonetheless.
foljs 5 months ago
@foljs Music synthesis software is a non-existing category!? So let me get this straight, Fruity Loops, Absynth, Massive, Albino, Reaktor, REASON and all those other standalone and/or plug-in SOFTWARE SYNTHS don't have their own category?? Haha, LOL, cool story brah!!
SamAndrew27 5 months ago
@SamAndrew27 """Music synthesis software is a non-existing category!? So let me get this straight, Fruity Loops, Absynth, Massive, Albino, Reaktor, REASON and all those other standalone and/or plug-in SOFTWARE SYNTHS don't have their own category??"""
They have their category, alright. It's called (drum roll) "Software Synths". You even managed to MENTION IT by name, LOL. Reason is not a soft synth, though, it's a DAW that INCLUDES several soft synths plus 2 samplers, a sequencer etc.
foljs 5 months ago
@SamAndrew27 You say it's laughable then go on to say that Reason is not designed to be used in the same fashion as DAWS? You do realize you proved my point with your answer correct?
viceversaDNB 5 months ago
@viceversaDNB Negative. I didn't say that Reason is "not designed to be used in the same fashion as DAWS." I just said that Reason is not a DAW...apparently 6 will be though, which I'm not sure about. My point was just that it doesn't do what Pro Tools or Logic does (even though it works along side them). Guess I was harsh to call what you said "laughable," but you were kinda trollin. Anyhow, I am biased towards Reason, I think it's the best music software out there.
SamAndrew27 5 months ago
@viceversaDNB you can use reason and cubase duh..its two completely seperate programs..its all opinion. theres hits on the radio made with reason. if you cant get a good mix thats your fault

Damn, when I see a new Propellerhead video I want to run immediately in the studio and make some music. Those people starring were so inspiring, it kinda makes me go buy some portable audio recorder, and start travelling around the world for new samples.

only things i hate about reason. 1) low resolution GUI. it looks so small on my screen and i have to squint to see it.
2) its very redundant (lot of un necessary clicks to get one thing done
thats about it.
im a reason user.
but i make the sounds in reason and work it back into ableton.
withaspoon94 7 months ago
@withaspoon94 learn the shortcuts, its worth it..
TWMusicBerlin 7 months ago
@TWMusicBerlin still though theres something that takes 3 times longer to do in reason than it takes in ableton. ableton just works better with my workflow, i get a lot done in notime.
withaspoon94 7 months ago
@withaspoon94 i dont know what you mean
TWMusicBerlin 7 months ago
@withaspoon94 what takes you 3 times longer in reason!?
TWMusicBerlin 7 months ago
@TWMusicBerlin like if i want to sidechain a compressor with a drum track as my input and a synth, i have to do a lot more than just drag and drop in ableton
withaspoon94 7 months ago
@withaspoon94 no make that in a combinator patch, save it, and you you can load it in a second anytime you want^^

@WestChiloProductions The upgrade to Reason 6 is free for Reason owners if you get Balance. So that download upgrade price is zero for you.

Thanks :)
ElectronicAether 7 months ago
@ElectronicAether I started on reason. Reason IS a great productive tool, you can easily and efficiently get your ideas laid down. Its great for experimenting and just being creative full stop and overall its a really quick process. However, I dont particularly like the synths or mastering within reason, so once my ideas are laid down I tend to transfer into ableton live to enhance the synths and pre-produce. I wouldnt advise using reason alone, massive and sylenth are superior sounding imo :-)
marshymoo2 7 months ago
@ElectronicAether dont ditch logic , im sure you know of rewire, massive is amazing, but so is thor.....its not what you have its how you use it....once you get a good grip on reasons kong laying out your drum grooves is Maaaddd, as a producer your originality comes out using reason because it allows you to manipulate sounds with ease, and they are your sounds that you create, who no one else has ,
3wc 7 months ago
@ElectronicAether Logic isn´t complex. You just don´t know how to use it. I would advise you to learn Logic, Live and Reason (and Pro Tools and Cubase and...) Each one has it´s advantages over all the others, each one shines in something.
You won´t regret it.
Seems that it´s still very early on your production career. The best DAW is the one you like more, but don´t fall in the terrible mistake of discarting DAWs because you don´g know how to use them correctly.
