@ericmaine He did have a strong but limited acting range.
Although during this scene and until his death, he was in severe pain from a head tumor and on medication so he wasn't always able to express himself fully.
WOW! Talk about sticking it to them! Ellie made it clear what she thought of them! AWESOME scene. Barbara Bel Geddes batted that one out of the ball park!
@AlbieGray LoL. They would deny it even happened. And speaking of Bush, Larry Hagman is no fan of his. He gave an interview about him a few years ago. You can probably google it.
@AlbieGray Larry Hagman is or was a democrat and was very outspoken about the Vietnam War during the 60's. You look at his characters in Dallas and IDOJ, and both characters in my opinion come across as being republican in both shows. Jack Nicholson also introduced Larry to marijuana in attempt to limit his drinking which eventually led to his scirosis of the liver in the 90's . While Larry directed SON OF BLOB in 1972, cast members claim he was high on pot the whole time.
ok I have to change this. Looking back Ray's wife was the one most worthwhile, she married him when she thought he was just a ranch hand. Pam would be a second. the worst wore hypocrites and opportunists.
@vlunney You're right but remember Donna had a "Life" outside the Ewing Compound. She was beautiful, smart, educated, and very successful and she didn't need The Ewing Name or Money for any status. She was even a Bestselling Author.
first off: remember she loved digger barnes and married jock so he would buy the ranch and keep it from going under. second: it never sickened her enough to to get a divorce probably because a settlement would be less money not to mention she'd lose a lot of her social position. the ONLY worthwhile woman in this series was Pam who probably would have married Bobby even if he was just a guy who worked the field.
@ftlshome1 So you think. Jock was THE HEAD of that household and he put her in her place when necessary. The episode where her brother returned. Jock: youre overstepping you place miss ellie, Miss Ellie: My place?! just what is my place?! Jock: It isn't running Ewings business, it isnt what we keep or give away...I am STILL the head of this household...with or without your permission. This is just one instance. He loved her and would defer to her but if she pushed, he'd correct her.
This show ruined a great opportunity with Miss Ellie. She was too perfect. She should have been more on JR's side. Defend him even when he was wrong, like most mothers. At least from a dramatic POV it would be interesting.
@LBF522 This shows what a major Sexist Pig Jock was. He never thought that a Woman could hold herself in Business like a Man could. JR was far from perfect. He lost alot of money in bad business deals, he mortgaged Southfork as collateral, and to think that was Susan Flannery who would play Stephanie Forrester on The Bold & The Beautiful and Patrick Duffy now has a recurring role on that show as well.
@laminage Jock came from a different era don't forget so one could assume if they had a daughter, she would not have been expected to take part on Ewing Oil. Lucy certainly wasn't.
I love Susan Flannery and Patrick Duffy on Bold and the Beautiful.
@LBF522 Yeah, you're right about that. That's kind of sad. It's past the fact now but The Family should have encouraged to have Lucy have some part of The Business. Maybe she could have worked there in The Summer as a Clerk or something. JR worked at Ewing Oil from the time he was a Teenage Boy, but don't you notice that JR was tough as nails with everyone else but with Josh he was so scared.
@laminage Yes JR did respect and love Jock and times should have told Jock to back off like when in the miniseries Jock kept remarking to Sue Ellen if she was pregnant yet. It should have been JR not Ellie who should have told Jock to cut it out. He did have his moments although he and Jock never yelled at each other like Jock and Bobby did.
I don't suppose anyone has the episode where Jock and Miss Ellie have a fairly intense argument because Miss Ellie finds out Jock deserted his first wife because she developed a mental illness?
It seems like Miss Ellie could have shown some understanding here where JR is concerned. Clearly, JR is who he is b/c of Jock. At the very least, she shouldn't be jumping down his throat.
JOCK was a real mans man! Which is why his character was extremely relevant through out the entire run of Dallas includin gthe reunion shows. What character had that much clout on TV with only being on the show for 3 yrs? Dallas made and broke the Mold for the best drama in TV History.
This was in the midst of the fight Miss Ellie and Jock were having over Takapa, which really was her anger and resentment over feeling Jock preferred Ray over Gary. They separated and almost divorced, until Ray and Donna finally got them together and talking, and they reconciled.
Jim Davis was ill here. I first started watching Dallas back in thw sping of 1984 I was 16 and all it took was one episode when they reran the series on WOR tv . I wanted to see The Only Man who coudl keep JR Ewing in line and Jock was a powerhouse. Even Ill he kept that show going smoothly. Just too bad he had to pass away. He gave Dallas its strength. His chatacter was so pivotal that even after he died Dallas kept the Jock's Name in almost each script from 1981 - 2004. He was the Patriarch.
@NFitalianGuy How do you know Jim was ill here. He was great, they had that painting of him. That was pretty cool. I miss Dallas, at least show the reruns.
One person jock let get him straight.

@BigDickMcGirk I agree. Ellie did tend to side against JR like with Clayton. The Ewings were better in the miniseries than the series.

Did Jock spoil Southfork when he came in and saved it from foreclosure? Miss Ellie wasn't complaining about Jock then.
