  • I miss my Mindspring account.

  • These were the days...played the shit out of some Quake II with a P2 333 (oced to 400MHz), 192MB of PC100 SDRAM, two Diamond Monster 3D IIs in SLI, an STB Riva TNT, a Diamond Monster Sound II, Soundblaster AWE 64, and a 14.4GB IBM Desktar. It's insane that I needed three graphics cards and two soundcards just for compatibility with all my games. Oh, let's not forget the serial 56k US Robotics modem.

  • Ahhh,Netscape web browser...takes me back to freshman year in highschool.

  • It's funny how Windows 95 was like compared to the Windows 7 i'm watching this video on now

  • "The Internet". I love that icon.

  • Internet was so civilized way back then... Gosh, it's so nostalgic :(

  • @51m50n no it wasn't, it was horrible. I remember it, all those ghastly geocities sites, the uncontrollable popups and the fact that it took 20 minutes to download 1 mp3!

  • @leerees At least everything was so simple. And the amount of 10-year old trolls was way lower than it is nowadays.

  • Still using mIRC

    Still using Winamp

    Had Netscape till about 06

    Geocities till 05

And it still aint the same.

  • oh my i was just a little kid in 1998 and i had a windows 98 pc with dial up at the time....

  • @robotman5 and the ram wasn't good so i got BSOD's alot and it was slow.

  • Great vid man. This brings me back... :)

  • Well, i used to play avi's and mpg's on it... anyway...

  • Well, we also used BS player... And flash player was common thinkbut it think you haven't heard of it? Since you browsed plaint HTML pages??? Come on, this is 1995 than 1998...

  • @galinpetkov Actually I do remember using BS Player but I don't remember much about it. I think I used it for MOD files?

  • @galinpetkov at 1:14 they are chatting about myth: the falling lords. That game first came out in 1997

  • Back in days going on IRC was like today living on the Facebook.

  • Netscape Navigator

  • 'Should I buy a Voodoo 2?'. I actually laughed! lol

  • A significant part of me wishes that Windows still looked like this.

  • @djmordigal you can use it, i use windows 7 with no theme, it is faster and still having the drag to side feature :D

  • @heroijapa Oh I know, I was just saying. Thanks though.

  • mid sound

  • IRC is still around. :D

  • that day was my 1st birthday :)

  • Are you from Germany?!

  • The Internet: You've come a long way, baby.

  • i want to know if that guy ended up getting a voodoo2

  • I honestly never understood the appeal of chat rooms. Unless you were trying to find someone to meet up with to have sex....

  • lol, geocities

  • @burningsigil If only the site's that used it were still here...

  • Oh man, Myth.

    I love Myth.

  • Wow, you know this is old when playing a MIDI file brings up a splash screen.

  • gahh, for a second I was about to move my cursor to the text entry box for typing a response to LuNi about RGB modes in GLHexen2..."hey, you can buy a GeForce GTX 560 or a Radeon HD 6870 for less than $200 these days!" I probably used a TNT2 M64 or maybe still a Voodoo 3 2000 at the time.

The whole setup is completely familiar, heh; I've seen all of those tray icons (except the two green ones on the right) recently, too.

  • put in the description the names of the songs so you do not ask and also to know :)

  • IRC? in 1998?! HOW ARCHAIC! haaaaaa

  • "It's nice because it's hard" -- Jigen (IRC, 1998)

    :p

  • We know, you had to edit out all the porn.

  • Wait, there was porn on the internet in 1998? Damn, I missed out!

  • Winamp!! hell yes

  • 2 days before my 6th birthday, my my.

  • Hey, AnimeNation is having a blowout sale.

    Oh.

I used to browse AWT on my school's old iMacs back in early 1999. I remember finding a site that had Quicktime videos of Dragonball Z episodes. They would take about an hour to buffer and twenty minutes to play. If someone had told me that one day there would be a website full of videos that could be played instantly I would have kicked them in the nuts.

  • ICQ! lol

  • whats the first song?

  • i can tell you love anime. i enjoy anime.

  • This was my 10th birthday. o.o crazy

  • Hey, I'm Krakn. I was there when the world was new. Also, I'm old.

  • @Krakn3Dfx was that you that set the topic name at 6:26?

  • Howdy. I'm asiekierka who just discovered #3dfx. (efnet)

Also your Geocities site is still there at oocities.org/tokyo/towers/1237/index3.html

  • Howdy. I'm Cartossin on #3dfx. (efnet) This channel is still very active. Imagine that. Amazing seeing all these names of people who still use the channel.

  • lol forever. Thanks for doing this. It's awesome.

  • Man, ten years ago, it was already 2002...

  • I don't care if he recorded with his VHS,it is still better than those potatoes, that those children use to record their pathetic video with a pathetic music.

  • "should i buy a voodoo 2?" LOL..

  • @kokfah Voodoo 2 was the king back then. That fucking nVIDIA just ripped off the 3dfx

  • @SonicAnimator1 still remember when i use the voodoo 2 to play games, love it :)

  • mirc.. this bring back memories :)

  • Ewwww..That Internet is The Same Age As Me.

    O.o

  • look at that speed of the loading bar!! Oh wait.. it's going the other way now..

  • It would be iteresting to know your scpecs...

  • @DiamondGB

I was just wondering if you know the song playing at 7:34. If you could tell me it would be much appreciated. :-)

  • Ah, the times when there was no one on the net going by the name Christian Weston Chandler.

  • DIAL-UP AND DSL ARE WHAT PEOPLE USE IN HELL

  • I had CABLE internet with Time Warner Cable and a 10MBps wired router/gateway in 1998 :)

  • I wish i could travel in time... so i could see this by myself.

Ah... the 90s... when Windows 95 was the most powerful and top-of-the-line operating system.

    Thanks man!

  • @TheAtomKiller2000 Windows NT 4 was much better, if you had a powerful PC.

  • @TheAtomKiller2000 I wish I could travel back in time to 1998... and that I could bring my laptop with me! ;)

  • LOL. awesome. I played Myth: TFL, Myth II. Boy I feel old!

  • I can't wait until they build a time machine. I would adore to see the Internet of the 1990's.

  • 1998 Irc Topic: 'Starcraft rocks my small, pathetic, little world...'

2012 Facebook Status: 'Starcraft 2 rocks my small, pathetic, little world...'

  • This is only a chat session with intermittent web browsing. 1998 was the year Google went online out of a garage. The web was slow back in 1998 unless you were at work with your "super-fast" T1 at 1.5 megabits. I still remember Napster on dial-up. How awesome it was for the first time to be able to get what ever song I wanted, for free, in "only" 30 minutes. No more trips to the mall just to look at CDs! Sometimes when a website takes a while to respond, "modem sounds" come to mind.

  • Back in those days , your pc was a beast , didn't it ?

  • Comment removed

  • wow only 13 years ago it was like this. imagine what it will look like 13 years in the future. i cant wait :) btw thats yhe year i was born

  • Wow it's amazing how everything in the way computers work is different now.

  • 33.600 U.S Robotics Kick ass back then... LOL

  • I still have 1998 dial-up :(

  • Nostalgia....

  • In a strange way I miss the internet from back in the day. Yes, it was limited, but it was so cool and new. Ha ha good times.

  • Song name at 5:40?

  • @Redharry48 Peter Schilling - Sonne, Mond und Sterne

  • interesting

  • that looks awesome! nice piece of history!

  • Thank you very much, this is exactly what I've been looking for, a fine example of internet before the super-technology, especially the year 1998 is exellent example. This has really made my day. Thank you. Best regards!

  • Oh My God...I'd forgotten all about Ani-Pike! Thanks for the memory man!

  • 56k

  • i have an email from 2002 when I had one of my internet friends sent the log files of our conversation from 1997. What a year that was as mp3's came out on mIRC as they were starting to take over wav file. That was so awesome to get the full song other than only the chorus. I remember using audio chat on the internet and how buggy it is. Sometimes i look back at that text file and laugh and cry at past convo's.

  • Surf the internet like its 1998

  • а ты на какую аппаратуру снимал?

  • netscape!!! OMG!!

  • wow. I miss the old days of the Internet, brings back old memories..:)

  • 1:26 if this was today, you would've gotten ten "that's what she said"s out of that line. I miss the 90's :( so simple. So SQUEAKY CLEAN

  • Whats that song at 7:31 ?

    Does anyone know?

  • this is a good example of how a internet user where in the good times before super small pc's, and high speed internet, and other shit that can ruin you today, i just want it to be like this again.

  • @nicolaj0154 WTF? what is wrong with small pc's or high speed internet? I mean this is amazinggggggg ! Theres super big pc's too .. i dont understand u.. OLD internet was good and everything, but now its easier :P

  • @MissRenesmeePretty bleh, =P

  • @nicolaj0154 -.- ?

  • Lol, brings back memories, this is how we would get movie and music back then - mIRC - now everyones using torrents, back then you has to gain access to FTP servers!!

  • Wow. This is awesome. I've been using computers since around 98, but I was only 6 and that was only when I went to the library. I didn't become a real computer fan until my family bought one in 2005.

  • I wish there were more videos like this. Other than commercials, it's hard to find any footage of what the internet used to be like. Pure nostalgia.

  • 640x480 :)

  • @iluvgoldfrapp About the same resolution as VHS. ;)

How else will a quality recording on cassette be possible.

  • netscape navigator!

  • Incredible to think that you filmed this video when I was three and a half years old..

  • @CaptainOvious123 you are probably still three.

  • What i like is, that you managed to think of recording this on vhs back then.

People like you keep computer history alive:)

    Thanks for sharing

  • Ah, IRC. I remember that.

  • FUCK FACEBOOK

  • oh the l33tspeak back then. haha

  • winamp pre napster. good old days.

  • A whole freakin year before Reb & V shot up Columbine. I wonder what they (and all other people on that time) were thinking back then.

  • @purpleravenstar ... ok that's weird as hell, why was I thinking exactly the same thing.. lol. Eric harris's website popped to mind when watching this video.

  • OMG. GRAMMAR.

  • Very interesting video :)

I feel some kind of nostalgia right now, this seems very familiar, as illogical as it seems.

Also anyone in here except me still using IRC? Just wondering

  • Connection speed!

    Screen size!

    Web design!

    Animated Gif's!

    IRC!

    Europop music!

The only thing that didn't change is .... Winamp.

  • @Parkinson9999 you're right! Winamp is still the only media player worth using!
