Looking back, it's real easy to assume the American government tried to cover up the death of Tillman to silence him, a fear that maybe Tillman was against the way we were handling the situation in Afghanistan, and with Tillman's celebrity status, his displeasure would give him instant credibility if he chose to speak out.

Then read up on the topic a little. It's not even a matter of debate whether Tillman was anti-war or not. He told his fellow soldiers how wrong the wars were and he was going to meet with Noam Chomsky after he left service to campaign against Bush during the 2004 election.

It was an accident, and if the truth came out, it would be a black eye to the military and would ruin the possibility of using him for recruitment purposes. The "heroic sacrifice" line would have to be rescinded and the possibility of future recruits following in Tillman's footsteps would be affected.
