I am getting married in November of this year and who is playing at my wedding, yeah that's right this guy, Juan Serrano...how? well let's just say that it's good to know people...
There is as yet no cure for "focal dystonia." But you can get "Botox" shots in the forearm of the affected hand...It will relax your hand so it does not cramp up and cause your fingers to curl up when you play..Unfortunately, the "Botox" shots are very expensive and cost about 900 dollars a shot. So make sure you warm up your playing hand before you play the guitar and do not over practice....At the first sign of pain, stop playing and relax your hands under hot water for a minute or two......
I had a condition that finished my guitar playing. I had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. An incurable sickness that handycap people in the hands. I go to church ask God and He healed me in a second.
Check Wikipedia This condition is often treated with injections of botox, a commercially prepared form of botulinum toxin. Botox, however, merely targets the symptoms of the disorder and is not a cure for dystonia. Since the root of the problem is neurological, it is thought that sensorimotor retraining activities can enable the brain to "rewire" itself in a manner that can ultimately eliminate dystonic movements. The work of Dr.
Dr. Farias has shown that proprioceptive stimulation can induce neuroplasticity, making it possible to recover from Focal Dystonia. There are successful exercise therapies developed independently by Frank Wilson and Patrick O'Brien
@NormanMac you wonder If Liona Boyd tried what? Flamenco techniques? Some classical players like flamenco. Many classical dont, but even them have try it and are good in flamenco.
Bravo Maestro! Excellent video! I sure hope Juan stays in Florida since he is now my maestro...I am really just starting to touch the surface of Flamenco. So i have a long way to go in technique and learning palos of flamenco. It is very time consuming just to learn one flamenco song. I have learned about half of Blazing Guitar from Juan but haven't completed the song and still need to clean up my technique. I hope I don't get focal dystonia...my shoulder has been killing me lately.
Yes I do. He has a blog at "My Space" you should check out. He now lives and teaches in Florida. I live in Florida also. I used to be a flamenco guitarist until I developed a condition in my left hand called, "focal dystonia." It is a repetition injury. Some musicians can get it. The hand curls up if I touch the guitar strings...I first saw Juan in concert back in 1968. I am 61 now. At 49 I had to stop playing...I used to play Juan's music that my teacher took off the LP's I brought to him.
Well i bet you were a great guitarist also, i used to live in Florida, but i moved to California, i really wish i could be taught by Juan, that would be great, I'm practicing the "raspado" I' From Venezuela so i love this music, but for me the scale is hard.
Last summer (08) Juan Serrano taught a Flamenco class at Fresno State, where he used to be a Professor. I had the luck of being able to take this class with him and see him perform in concert with his son Juani. Who knows, maybe he will return : )
keep playing. i am learning at 59 andi its a struggle to do scales. mind is on course hands are getting painfull. i play classical but screaming to my tutor i want to play flemenco
Thanks! Sorry about the advertising banner across the screen, but the guy wants 35 bucks. I recommend his converter. It's the easiest to use and has a video splitter as well.

Very nice. SSU alumnus here. Too bad I wasn't there when he showed up in 1987. Saw this video several times in the library though.

@AkiraSamuray I was referring to the "successful exercice therepies" for Focal Dystonia as she has been a victim of this affliction.
