So.. I don't know how to prevent this. Better helmets is my guess.

I remembered this play too! Gretzky was a member of the Kings at the time when this happened and Brent Sutter was with the Calgary Flames during that time. Lots of people in Los Angeles were pretty pissed off about this hit when it was shown on Eyewitness News.
Gretzky was God in Los Angeles, and the fact that Sutter played for Calgary intensified the "Heated" rivalry between the Flames and Kings just a notch higher from this Sutter hit on Gretzky.
That was the turning point in gretzky's career. went from a 160+ point player to a 120+ point player.

I remember when the Hornung injury happened, reading about it in the Hockey News, but I'd never seen a tape of the incident before. I remember his father Larry as an NHL defenseman. He was picked by the Islanders in their original expansion draft, but never played for them and ended up getting traded for a young, unknown prospect named Bob Bourne!
Suter, a US guy who played his best years in Canada, shortened the careers of two of Canada's best, Gretzky & Kariya, with real cheap shot plays.

@coady28 : :-) Of course it is better in Europe. We do not need a hard game but technical. It is preferred before the hardness, because it is beautiful. Your mentality is in hockey for us primitive. In addition - Canada was often unfair to the hard play. So you do not have better hockey, but only in the spiral and money.When we want a tough sport we have boxing or kickboxing and the like. How would these noobs fared as injuries to the ice with the Klitschko brothers? :-)

@HuskyWolfPuppy if you get hit and you're injured your not supposed to get up and start running around, do you have any medical knowledge? If you get injured and fractured a bone or hurt muscle and get up without knowing you end up just doing more damage...

@kyle676567 well you don't know hockey then, or what i'm talking about. if you break a bone you don't may down, unless your leg is broken. if you break your wrist, you can skate to the bench, break your collar bone, you can skate to the bench, break anything below your hip (including your back) you can skate. if you're hurt you're gonna have to get up eventually.

If you had any sense of muscles, bones, tendons, work or more importantly what they connect to you'd laugh at your comment too. If you fractured your pelvis and tried to skate away it would just rip apart, and if you injured your back you wont be mobile. If you are injured stay down if its just some pain move on

@kyle676567 i've been around the game for 14 years, played in the WHL, ref in the WHL, coached in Jr. B, was a trainer for Major Midgets. you OBVIOUSLY know nothing about hockey, or you're European or American. a fucking pussy lays on the ice. yeah if your back is fucked, your neck, or like i said... ANTHING SERIOUS, you can lay on the ice and wait for a stretcher. if you can skate, you get your ass off the ice instead of cry like a bitch.

I remembered this play too! Gretzky was a member of the Kings at the time when this happened and Brent Sutter was with the Calgary Flames during that time. Lots of people in Los Angeles were pretty pissed off about this hit when it was shown on Eyewitness News.
Gretzky was God in Los Angeles, and the fact that Sutter played for Calgary intensified the "Heated" rivalry between the Flames and Kings just a notch higher from this Sutter hit on Gretzky.
