I saw this race on tv with my brother and i was yelling that Forego had got there and he was saying he didn't, this is along with the '78 Belmont are two greatest races I've ever seen, Secretariat's Belmont was the greatest performance but those two were the greatest races in my opinion...
I was a kid and saw some the greatest races @ Belmont during the 70's. This one included. From Riva Ridge on, the 70's was the greatest era in horse racing period.......Thanks for the video.
I was there that day. I'll never forget the moment when Forego's number went up. I just couldn't believe he'd actually made it, and on a sloppy track he hated, too. And when he returned to the winner's circle, people were cheering like mad. I feel so blessed to have been there that day.
Thanks for digging this one up! Those days of 137lb handicaps are long gone just as horses who can run like freight trains like Forgo. Alas Martha Gerry just died in September 2007. She must've been thrilled to be reunited with Forgo again!
One of the great race finishes ever, by one of the sport's great horses. That's Dave Johnson with one of his best calls ever (he was calling the race for Belmont Park,s PA and on Channel 9 in NYC). By the way, if I'm not mistaken, the voice on the narration preceding Johnson's call is that of the man who would succeed him at Belmont in 1977, the late Chic Anderson (then working for CBS, ABC and Churchill Downs).
If you wanna see an exciting finish then find the 1975 Marlboro Cup.
Forego lost by a head to the 3 year old Wajima while giving him 3lbs. Forego was actually third, as both he and Wajima were flying at the end, picking up ground on the front runner with every stride.
It seems like I've seen that race in the last year, but I can't find it anymore.

Thanks for the heads-up, flatonia. I'll keep my eyes open for that '75 Marlboro. Sounds terrific. Take care.

I should have said that Forego was giving Wajima 10 lbs.
Two weeks later, with both carrying equal weight, Forego won the Woodward Stakes by two lengths while Wajima was second.
