do gaming companies even ask their fans what they want in the next game or edition or whatever and what they want added and disadded, instead of guessing what the fans want!!!
They need to make something like this for warhammer or mechwarrior or something. i've never even played a table top RPG before but it would probably be pretty cool.
IMO, AD&D2 is good enough. True, it has some inconsistencies but they can be easily fixed. Personally, I'll stick to AD&D2 but I may get some ideas from the new versions and use them. After all, the DM as the final word... always :)
Remove the kits from 2e, give ranger back d8 HD, d10melee/d6spell-ranged initiative, specialty clerics (pick 1 special Ability) +Cavalier, Barbarian, Monk and Assassin along, minus Munchkin crap and all would be ok! no skills and powers no point system 4d6 for Stat rolls and DMG 1E revamped for 2E.. Old School Dungeon Crawls and Role-Play!!!
3.0 and 4.0 put down and 1E/2E Hybrid (HackMaster) resurrected! They could still add new classes for it as well!
1) The new editions sound like they are only dumbing down the rules. Seriuously, everything that they said they want to do (add more intense battles, make the land a vital piece to the game) can be done easile already.
2) Using the online cabibility is smart, and true it could help those who cant get together. I have to admit the 3D boards are pretty neat. But making the character with a computer program takes away from the uniqueness of real-life games. You become limited by the images already programmed into the creator.
It really sounds like they just cant come up with better ideas, so they take the "online" idea from everything else out there.
Ooooooooooooh... Razzle dazzle. I like tha computer apps, but I really enjoy getting around with a group of friends that are right next to me to play D&D. I really hope this doesn't destroy the game I love...
I'm not impressed about this, I play WoW and D&D and can say nothing beats the face to face interaction. we did have a few mini sessions using MSN messenger but it was mainly prep for the big sessions that would take place every month, IMO if you cant come together face to face there is little or no point in playing D&D just go play WoW...
Ok....i like it, but er...theyre going to kill p&p, i mean dude...now i literally wont have ANY reason to move out of the house (bad thing). But yea still, i mean im stayin with 2nd lol.
Not only did they kill the roleplay, but the bokks don'T look as cool a they do in the 3rd edition. I think that offering the possibility to make your character as a 3d model is cool otherwise, stay with the 3rd edition...
Are they going to supply free voice chat as well? Text messenges can only provide so much emphasis or emotion, plus texting can take time. Having free voice chat would free up time, further streamlining the game, while including more role-playing aspects.
Nothing replaces imagination, a piece of paper and a pencil! I still prefer books. If i don't agree with the rules inside, i will just think of new rules! Besides, with 26 years old, d&d is just another way to gather my friends and have some laughes! It's not the RPG, it's the friends!
Unfortunately, one of my favorite parts of DnD has been that it forces people to get together in person. If you want to play on the internet, go play WoW.
i think the organized play is good, because i have a game running with my friends right now, but im to return to the states in a couple months....this way if we had organized play we could continue the campaign no differently then if i was still there.
Seems like it would work but Ill always stay loyal to my 3rd edition group and rules.
It so much more fun to say "I charge the gnoll and spin to it's left gaining momentum for my battle axe swing" *AC fail* "The gnoll raises his shield to block your axe but doesn't reach high enough as his head bounces across the floor it is made evident."
WTf this is bullshit, is just a fucking excuse for these bloodsuckers at wizards to get even more money from you, this organized play and online "complementary material" is just a way for them to make mediocre books and make u pay for the rest of the info "they couldnt get in the book". They dont care about the players, they just wanna get even richer....
I'm truly deceived by what they done to D&D, the fun in the game is to be with friends, to remove the ''social'' thing in D&D is a bad idea... Sorry but I already own 250 $ in 3.5 books (french books cost lot more !!!) but I'm not going to purchase the 4th
My worry is that this feature will take away story-telling elements. Also, I'd rather keep using character art rather than the digital model. I would just keep playing on the table, but I have friends who have recently moved away that I would like to keep playing with.
My only fear is that they make a game that´s impossible to convert the old campaings and, by this way, doom all the old characters and campaings to finish or to still in the pats while the whole world is advancing.
Perhaps the *worst* thing they mention in this is that Organized Play will be involved in D&D 4th Edition. Organized Play, for those who don't know, were instrumental in killing the old Living Campaigns and disenfranchising a huge number of old players...
and by the way...dnd is a great game and their will is to make a great game even better by sychronizing the game, and something else...who said that there is no imagination...this is the table board for god name it isn't the game,it's just a digital game board, and imagination will still be needed,as your dice and your brain
Canning Dragon magazine after decades of print was a BAD decision. Turning it into a pseudo online version is , unfortunately, not going to be enough to placate old players. Buut, that said, i dont think they care...its all about getting new players into the game...the existing player base can go stuff itself or continue to play, they really dont care.
And, most importantly, moving to an online game will turn this into a mass of statistics and dungeon-crawling. It will be WoW on bad opium. The biggest thing D&D has going for it over MMORPGs is the fact that you can still roleplay, with your voice, with your body, with your friends.
I never screwed with running games through NWN and I won't screw with games running through this software. What implementations do they have when, for instance, a player wants to move 25 feet to save his dying friend on the same turn, and he can only move 20 for his move action?
I would like to see the service as pay-by-use rather than monthly. That is, you set up an account, and if you want to use the Dragon suppliment for a particular month, your account is charge X dollars. If you want to use the online tabletop, you are charge Y dollars and can use it for the remainder of the month. That way, you dont pay for anything you do not want.
I think maybe you guys are missing the point. D&D Insider is an OPTIONAL subscription service. The online game table is a tool you can use, just like webrpg or any of those other internet programs used to simulate a tabletop experience. Obviously we'll have to wait until it's finished to see how it turns out, but it looks relatively impressive to me.
digital d&d isnt so bad to be able to play with each other across distance or whatever.. better than ddo or nwn could do.. the only problem is we shouldnt have had to wait for 4th edition or even 3.5 edition.. 3rd edition had the available technology, the programmers they hired for etools just sucked.. oh btw.. computers cant roll random dice.. its not possible for a computer to be truely random
Internet tools have been done way better, and apart from trying to sell more online content i don't really see what they've been trying to gain there.
Wow, they wasted thousands of man-hours on this ridiculousness. What do we need this crap for? It's an excuse to charge $50 per book for the new crap.
I'm puzzled by this, don't we basicly already have better D&D online gaming through NeverWinter Nights (NWN1 & NWN2)?
Also, the details on how the gameplay has changed are extremely vague. How is this not just new images and graphics on the same gameplay? Heck, even that is barely changed, since they are trying to keep that consistent for branding.
They're not getting that Ham. and worst is that there's a lot of important stuff in the monster manual that you NEED to pay for the subscription to unlock.
Oh god they sound -so- awkward talking! Like leeviajero said, they fall waaay short of selling their product to me, I'm unlikely to spend cash on their new stuff.
At the same time that I am excited by the dawn of the tecnhology, I am afraid. Afraid that people forget how to roleplay. I just expect these tools be just that, tools.
whats it matter if they make gygax happy, they own the game now they can run it into the ground as much as they want, not like they haven't already, anyways
Shame they decided to do this. I was fine buying more 3.5 stuff. But not willing to go out and repurchase all this again.
The online stuff may be really neat coming from someone with gamers all over the area. We have been looking for this (using web cams). No subscription.
All in all I think I will stay with 3.5. Maybe one of the other gaming groups will be my next systems. After all if I am going to have to repurchase all these books. Might as well look at other systems as well. :)
Sign of the times. Sad that RPGs won't even be able to teach people to use their right brain ... it'll all be about hand-eye coordination and geeky computer crap.
Well, it was always about minatures, but I agree- this is really designed for those who are poor in imagination .
Also, these guys talk like some sort of managers, even using ridiculous corporate jargon. With the added, obligatory occasional "cool" utterance (which only serves to make them sound more sad, unfortunately.)
I'm not buying 4.0
These guys have not sold me with their pitch, and even if they had, the whole idea is just such a transparent and commercially crass move.
No reason to use miniatures and online images if you don't want to, sireldren.
If you don't want to play the new editions, simulacrum41, don't buy em. Just because there'll be a 4.5 in another ten years doesn't mean you have to stop playing 4.0.
Just because you buy new books doesn't mean you have to subscribe to the DM insiders, RedKnight79 - remember what they said, it's like an extra's disc on DVD. You don't have to view the extras just to enjoy the movie.
And VERY expensive. To make a single prototype mini (which is basically what you'd be asking for) they'd probably have to charge 100+ dollers just to break even.
There is a company in Oz that makes custom miniatures for wargames. Basically you (or someone else) have to order 100 mini's at 3 dollers AU a peice before they make them
Well, I hope they don't put out 4.5 for another ten years. All of that 3.5 materials, hundreds of dollars, gone. poof. I'm glad I kept my purchases limited.
Maybe, might be cheaper and it will really depend on how much you play as to it's value. The Global side of things is kind of cool but it would probably have been better as a stand alone product the DM could pick up and use offline
Cool Character Designer, etc, almost great advancement for the game, especially the ability for people to play on a global basis, but yes, the dull monotone just drained the fun.
