  • This really made my day. I think this style is flexible enough for people to express whatever level of sexiness they wish to. So it does work fine with little ones, if they are into it of course. I clapped aloud for them at the end! Fun to see Toddler Undulations! Shimmies are beyond them -- but they'll have that down pat by next week no doubt, no doubt. Sooner than I will...

    Bety Damballah - Brazil

  • adorable!

  • I've seen Kamara perform in person! She's my favorite dancer in Colorado and one of my favorite tribal dancers, period. One can say that I'm a fan.

  • What amazing control! It's great to see such great individual style that is still rooted in a solid ATS foundation. Plus, it's wonderful to see her daughters bonding with their mum through dance.

  • how do you know those are her daughters????

  • how come the teacher is soooooo jerky with her movements? they arent smooth at all. if its on purpose she shouldnt bother... because it doesnt look all too great.

  • You haven't had the understanding of various styles of Tribal and movements then.

  • (This is starriieyes) Fair enough. You were correct. At the time i wasn't... nor am i actually.

  • Since she's not doing "traditional" belly dance, the movements aren't supposed to be "smooth" all the time. Her style is ATS (American Tribal Style) which is a fusion of traditional and tribal style belly dance so there is a lot of mechanical movement added to the stylization of the moves, which is why she is jerky.

It's not a style that appeals to everyone but it takes just as much practice to master as the traditional styles.

  • You know, I was also thinking about cultures that don't have as strict coverup rules - a lot of them have very clear cut rituals/clothing announcing the change from child to woman and eligability for marriage...we don't have that as much. Perhaps clothing coverage wouldn't matter quite as much if we had more clear cut signals and rituals denoting readiness for adult interaction. We're so confused without them.

  • the little kids are so cute :D

i TOTALLY agree with the comment by Direness. get them dancing and proud of themselves BEFORE they have to "relearn" how nice it is to feel confident and feminine =p

  • AHHHAHAHAHAHA! That was ridiculously adorable! That made my day, I couldn't stop giggling...SO cute :) Love to see little ones getting involved, belly dance is so good for women and girls of any age.

I need to know - what is the song here? I have been looking for this particular song forever, but I don't know who does it or what it's called! Anyone?

    Much appreciated!

  • Shashkin - Omar Faruk Tekbilek

for eg. on the album Tribal beats for the urban streets

  • Wow amazing laybacks!

  • That was really good. I love the little ones! I thinks its good that young girls learn the fun and spiritual side of belly dance.

  • Loved the dance Kamara did. Really stunning! Now I can actually show people what Tribal really looks like.

Im not so keen on little kids bellydancing, but it was cute.

  • Are you kidding? This is the best time for them to start learning, before society teaches them to be embarrassed & teaches them to stand against walls, afraid to listen to rhythm, afraid to move to the music. They're natural mimics at this age & they'll begin strengthening & building muscle memory. Better belly dancing than watching crap TV and getting fat. We have a little girl in our group who is just FANTASTIC - she'll be better than all of us when she hits our ages.

  • Absolutely- but why put them in bras? Why not put them in some sweet little Tunisian dresses or long Turkish vests? I love that my mama brought me to this dance young, but I'm glad she didn't dress me this way. Sure, everybody plays dress-up, but don't we have enough in our culture telling little girls to look adult and be sexy?

  • I think part of it is wanting to look "just like Mama&the other ladies". I'm split on the subject myself- isn't making them cover up teaching them that these parts of the body are sexual, bad & needing to be covered? Instead of just regarding them as a natural part of the body? But I also see the need for coverage on children, b/c we are sexualizing them at early ages w/ the little skirts & tiny tops, & we are in a society that contains dangerous elements towards children. Its a complex subject.

  • Belly dancing is not suppose to look sexy or be looked in that way. The problem goes with the people who see it that way.

  • I think that completely denying the fact that bellydance has a sensual/sexy vibe about it is silly. Instead we should accept that bellydance is sexy, but keep it very tame and modest. There is nothing wrong with feeling sexy while your bellydancing, but we don't need to act like strippers about it while we'e dancing, I agree.

  • Sexy comes in various defines. The sexy I was discussing was "stripper, all about the boobs and butt" type. A person can be all clothed up but still give a sexy vibe with out even doing anything. So those are two different forms of sexy (Tame/modest). It is the sexy that bothers me is when automatic people assume sex INSTEAD of appreciating the dance form and what the dance means. If a person dances to intice a person; okay, but dancing in general is an expressive form.

  • I think they should at least be old enough to understand what they're doing. It's a bit useless making kids dance an art form they can't understand. I agree with what PhaeVerte has said, that they children should be dressed a little more modestly...

This is awesome dancing, and a great song!

  • I don't think it's useless at all. I will occasionally teach my nieces Cha-Cha, East Coast Swing & other bits of ballroom, and they LOVE it! They'll dance the basic around the living room and then improvise with their own moves. How do you think this dance form spread in the early days? Children would watch their mothers, aunts, sisters dancing in the ladies' rooms, at weddings...they didn't get a lecture on how "this is an art form" before being allowed to dance.

  • For dance forms to survive and flourish, kids have to learn them and inherit them. Not everyone has the money/time/local availability to run off and take lessons from a teacher - if this was something that was normal in every household, practiced by every mother at home, this would be the dance of the nation b/c children would continue the cycle. THAT is inheritance. Children are part of dance history.

  • When learning to dance, no one understands what they are doing until they practice it and learn about it. Adults especially! Teaching the girls young gives them such a big advantage to become amazing belly dancers. If we change the look and the clothes of belly dancing, then we change the whole history of it for the present/future. Can't do that or belly dancing will be eventually forever lost. They are perfectly fine the way they are. I think they did an amazing job for their ages.

  • Hooray, so so cute! Kamara, you are a cool dancer, but I'm afraid your backup dancers steal the show!

    Much love!

    ~peace

  • This is so beautiful!

  • Aww, this is just the cutest thing ever! Not only is shashkin absolutely an AMAZING song, and that you are a fabulously SEXY awesome and a wonderful dancer, but this is just such an adorable and cool spin to the performance! heehee, I loved it!!!
