  • i love this lady she is my favorite gospel singer mahalia is next then the barrett sisters and shirley caesar

  • ..masters as they stood on the race track of time. The sinner said my mater's almighty, the christian said but he' snot as great as mine.

chain..but mine put Moses in Pharoh's own house and gave him to his sister to reign...

  • i was just wondering what she says in that first line... two men were discussing_____

and that part .... the master of Pharaoh who once kept the hebrew children in____

the american accent is too swift in those parts...

  • I may be wrong but I always thought on the second line that it isn't "in chain" but "enslaved" and not "reign" but "raise"

She slurs them both becauce they don't rhyme?

Whichever, I'll say it again, profound lyrics, inspired performance. Thanks again, "Town528" for sharing this.

  • I LOVE THAT NOTE AT 2:10

  • I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OLE SKOOL...i love it

  • I'm hooked to this video!!!! I am a native of B'ham, Al and didn't realize that this great woman of the gospel was only a community away from me! Evergreen Baptist Church in a community we called Evergreen Bottom. I think they should honor her in a greater way here in our city. It gives me chills just to know that everything she has sang about she is now enjoying and someday we will too! A true God Sent!

Thank God for her and God rest her soul until we all get to "FINISHING LINE" .

  • The number is few that can raise my SPIRIT like Dorothy Love Coates and the Gospel Harmonettes!! Actually being able to see and hear them sing is one good reason for the internet to exist! Living in a small town in Oregon there is no place to immerse yourself into LIVING PRAISE like this....Maybe I need to move back to my birthplace, Chicago!??! I'm going to immerse myself in all these video 'waters', by and by.

Thank you Minister, for hosting....GOD BLESS!!

    John Nelson Hauschild

  • My favorite! Praises Praises to God Almighty for blessing us with such a beautiful, honest storyteller... DLC can't be touched. You see every word in her songs. Deep!!

  • I love the stories that are in these songs!!!

  • Did Dorothy Love Coates ever record this? I can't find it on the reissues. Did she write this one? What a powerful performance. She means every word 150%. Great story telling.

  • Yes She did....You can find her records on itunes...And yes she wrote most of her songs

  • "If you've got him on your side - that's enough!"

What a brilliant, powerful performance and teaching. Great stuff!

  • That's so true

  • I LOVE THIS!!! I the traditional gospel music type and this is great! if only church was like this now!!! She is truly a legend! thanks for this video

  • Yes, if this were church today I would go most every day!!!!

  • Hey Glory! Now this is singing- all them runs and riffs is fine but this has a mesage.

  • Now thats old school there!

  • I believe it is! I love Sis. Love Coates ministry! This singing got them thru and will get us thru if we listen:) I noticed something that she does at 1:01 - 1:02 that looks like a move Shirley Ceasar does before her dance! I love it!

  • Yes, her lyrics are brilliant. Almost everything profound in Christian philosophy encapsulated in a few lines (with powerhouse delivery, she's a force of Nature).

  • is the name of this song, the winner? or, the finishing line??

  • Thank God I am ABOUT TO SHOUT ALL OVER MY OFFICE!!!!!!!!!!THANK YOU JESUS!

  • ii love her to death!!! she is prb my favorite of all time!! no1 can beat her voice!

  • MY MASTER CAN STOP THE WHEEL OF TIME//

  • I'm a long time Mahalia fan who has just discovered this woman.

I love her rough smokey voice.

She strikes me as sort of a gospel philosopher for lack of a better way of describing it.

I found out she wrote her own stuff and her lyrics are deep and imaginative.

    Very good! She's underrated.

  • Dorothy is truly a fireball for GOD! If you're lookin for some shonuff great and anoited singing, you're listening to the right thing!

God's choir is some kind of marvelous with her!

  • exactly what I was thinking... the very heavens had to be silent everytime she stepped on stage...

  • sing dorthy////

  • So that his who influenced Dottie Peeples.

  • Yes, If this were Church today, I have to say I would go most every day!

  • Thanks Lew! (James)

  • beautiful

  • cassidy1478: Right on. I bet you got here via Lew. I'm so excited that most of his readers are going to discover this GREAT woman & will be able to apply her message to WHATEVER beliefs they hold, as long as those beliefs comply with Natural Law.

  • I luv Ms.Dorothy Love Coates

  • Bring down the house gurls !

  • Fantastic song and feeling. Does anybody know if this song was ever recorded? I don't have it in the Gospel Harmonettes' cds I have...

    It's too great!

  • Yes this was recorded. You can still find it on the market.

  • Hey, thanks for the info - and most of all for posting such a fantastic song. I have found only one copy of the Nashvoro label LP "The Winner" in France from a private seller. Do you have any other news? Can it be found on cd? Thanks again!

  • town528: Wow, what a collection! Are you also a fan of "Gospel/blues", like Blind Willie Johnson & Arizona Dranes?

  • lord yes she the one to sing that song with her crew.

  • Her voice is filled with so much passion. Her music is truly a blessing to all that listen!

  • she was to the blacks what mahalia was to the whites. she did what the young folks think they made. she was before her time.

  • If this were church today, I have to say I would go most every day!

  • Look at that jump! Awesome! Can you believe that she wrote majority of those songs?

  • Check out that holy boldness in her facial and body expressions! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love her expressions also

  • I was absolutely devastated to know that she passed in 03'. I has all of this stuff recorded on VHS and ow I can't find it anywhere. Her voice is truly a "tower of power"! I will forever love and miss her.

  • I have always loved Dorothy Love Coates. She had a gravelly voice, but it was soooo anointed and powerful. I've never heard this song before, but I can't get enough of it! You can see the anointing "pop down" on her after a few words in the beginning. She takes on an intensity that wasn't there at first. So wonderful to see! Praise the Lord!

  • I've always loved her, too. There is a gospel music compilation with her and Mahalia Jackson and for all the latter's miraculous voice, I find Dorothy's anointing more riveting. In fact, I found myself weeping uncontrolably at the sheer power exuding from this woman. And no one could tell a story in song like Dot. I had the privilege of seeing this performance when it was originally broadcast and it made a indelible impression then.

  • i her voice were a ship in the storming seas i would have total confidence that she would see us through! Would love more of that! That strange man?

  • nice.

  • I like the backing singer sound. Check out the Loving Sisters and the Jewel Gospel Singers on you tube. They roll hard, but with less gravel.

  • Oh so wonderful! Thanks for posting.

  • Do you have the "Dragnet For Jesus" cd by Sister Wynona Carr? If you don't, you should get it. Sister Carr was at one time choir director at Rev. CL Franklin's New Bethel Baptist Church when Aretha and her sisters were growing up.

  • To brandyman24: No, I do not have a video copy of her funeral. I have a paper copy of the service, with pictures.

  • To antnee30:

I received the information from a copy of her homegoing service program forwarded to me by the Late Kitty Parham. She is definitely in Grace Hill Cemetary in the Birmingham area and was a life-long member of Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church, Birmingham.

  • The very first time I heard Dorothy Love Coates sing on a record, I was in a state of shock. I was not a Christian at the time, but knew this woman had been touched by God. Dorothy did not just sing, she ministered to the lost and found. She didn't take any prisoners. Before you knew it you were over powered by her voice and vocal delivery. She is one of my favorite gospel singers. She was one of the many great singers of the golden age of gospel.

  • Absolutely amazing. What a voice! Who ever sang anything truer or deeper than Dorothy Love Coates?

I was long an atheist. Before Jesus finally came to me, I often said, "I don't believe in God, but I believe in Dorothy Love Coates." Now I know that God was trying to speak to me through that wonderful voice. I just could not hear it.

  • "I don't believe in God, but I believe in Dorothy Love Coates." i am so down with this sentiment. dorothy is, was, and always be a queen. in this life and any others that may or may not exist.=]

  • If you really believe in Dorothy Love Coates, you will believe the message she sang.

  • Thank you. She's always been one of my favorites. I wonder if there's a video of her singing "That's Enough?"

  • To antee30: She started and ended at Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church. She is buried in Grace Hill Cemetary.

Church, so I am told. I don't know where she is burried.

  • THANKS SO MUCH church216!

  • I love Dorothy's facial expressions and the smiles and laughs she does

  • That's when soul gospel music had a sound and style above all others and you knew the difference. The industry needs to bring it back.

  • I agree. You don't know what you're listening to today.

  • One of the greatest of all. I called her about seven years ago or so (1999 or 2000), right around Christmas. She was very modest, especially when I told her that I preferred songs to Mahalia Jackson's. She died in 2002, I think: a sad loss of one of the great people of this world.

  • Hey do you know where she is buried at in Birmingham? Do you know the name of the church she started at?

  • I love her. She is the greatest

  • Good Lord, this woman was brilliant. Sooo underrated. Get it Dorothy!

  • This is simply wonderful! Great to se Siter Love Coates and Cleopatra Kennedy singing background, before here days with James Cleveland.

  • Thanks for another winner. Dorothy Loves Coates was a prolific song writer. Her delivery was exceptional. Still waiting for "Get Away Jordan."

  • Dorothy Love coates always has the ability to write the most creative situations through song .... She is just amazing to me !!
